Area Students Make All-Conference Teams in Multiple Sports

The Northern Lakes 2A/3A Athletic Conference has announced All-Conference awards for football, volleyball, cross-country and men’s soccer.  Several local student-athletes have been honored for their athletic accomplishments. For football Vance County High School’s Omari Allen was named Lineman of the Year as well as All Conference. Other Vance County High All Conference players were Isman Alston, Davion Vines Holder, Israel Terry, Taeshawn Alston and Nazir Garrett. Carl Stephens III, Nathaniel Durham and Chris Jones were honorable mentions.  Granville Central won the sportsmanship award and Ashton Applewhite and Trenton Harrington received all conference honors with Corey Baird, Ryan Johnson and Isaiah Sasser receiving honorable mentions. South Granville’s Malachi Batchelor, Khawan Bobbit, Neo Hunter, Ian Lipsey and Micah Wilkerson were named to the all-conference team and JF Webb’s Javon Bullock, Ikeem Hunt and Jaheim Hartsfield also made the all-conference team with Kaelen Smith, Logan Bowen and Alex Bridges receiving honorable mentions.

For Volleyball, Courtney Williams of JF Webb took player of the year honors with Granville Central winning the sportsmanship award. All Conference players for JF Webb, in addition to Williams, were Chapman Burnette, Megan Newton, Carly McGhee and Hailey Cowan with Terri Sanford and LaShawnti Howard receiving honorable mentions. South Granville’s Samantha Piotrowski, Megan Ellis and Madison Staton made the all-conference team with Destini Bland receiving an honorable mention. Vance County High School’s Jalea Taylor was the only Viper to make the volleyball all conference team. Granville Central also only had one all-conference player, Alexa Riley with Hannah Lynch and Ayani Bagley receiving honorable mentions.

In Cross-Country, Vance County High School won the Sportmanship Award. Boy’s all-conference runners were Lane Prochaska and Derek Morales from Granville Central while Nataly Diluccia, also of Granville Central, was named to the girl’s cross-country all-conference team.

In Men’s soccer, Granville Central received the Sportsmanship award with Timothy King Navez, Jeffery Castro and Kevin Rios all representing the school on the all-conference team. Connor Rice and Terrance Alston represented JF Webb.  Jason Carroll and Carter Scott, from South Granville and Fernando Martinez Zuniga and Waseem Hadi of Vance Co. High School rounded out the local players on the men’s soccer all conference team.

Vance Charter School’s Men’s soccer team also received awards from their conference: Matthew Breedlove was named Co-keeper of the year. Hagan Hill, Ryan Parker, Jacob Seaman and Wyatt Yount were all named to the all-conference team with honorable mentions going to Braydan Earnhardt, Christian Lopez and Davis Suther. Vance Charter also received the sportsmanship award.

Vance County High School returns to the road this Friday night as the Vipers take the short trip through Granville County to meet Granville Central. Granville Central is one of the two 1A members of the current Northern Carolina Conference (along with Louisburg), but the Panthers are not playing like a “little brother” in the conference.

Now undefeated at 5-0, and 3-0 in the NCC, they opened the season with back-to-back 35-0 shutouts of Bartlett Yancey (2A) and Kipp Pride (1A), and went on to defeat Roanoke Rapids, Warren County and J. F. Webb. Along the way, they had two nonconference games postponed (or maybe cancelled) because of hurricanes. These weather delays required Granville Central to play Bunn this past Monday, and the panthers kept their streak alive with a 22-21 win ! This makes a very full week for the Panthers, who are catching the Vipers on their way UP. Vance County has improved to 2-2 over their past four games, and came just two points short of collecting a win of their own over Bunn two weeks ago.

Granville Central High School Holds Military Fair

A military fair was recently held at Granville Central High School located in Stem, NC on Wednesday, April 18, 2018.

Representatives from various branches of the military were present to provide information and answer questions.

All grade levels were invited to attend.  The fair provided students the opportunity to learn about the military, and if interested, which branch would be the best fit for them.

Houston Astros Carlos Díaz Visits Granville Central High School

The Spanish students at Granville Central High School recently had the privilege of listening to Carlos Díaz, Center Fielder of the Houston Astros, talk about Puerto Rico and the current crisis affecting the country. He shared places to visit, typical food, and information about the status of Puerto Rico since Hurricane María and Irma. He also shared information about being well-rounded students who are excelling in the classroom and on the field. He encouraged students that are looking to enter professional sports to make sure that they are well rounded because sports are a part of who you are, but they don’t define who you are.

Red Cross and Sport Clips Haircuts offer free haircut coupon to blood and platelet donors

DURHAM, N.C. (Aug. 21, 2017) – Feel good, do good and look good this September by donating blood or platelets with the American Red Cross and get a free haircut coupon from Sport Clips Haircuts. Blood and platelet donors of all blood types, especially type O negative and O positive, are urgently needed to replenish the blood supply following a critical summer blood shortage.

“We are excited to continue the Saving Lives Never Looked So Good campaign and partnership with Sport Clips this September,” said Donna M. Morrissey, director of national partnerships, Red Cross Biomedical Services. “We are grateful for Sport Clips showing its support of the Red Cross and saying ‘thank you’ to those helping save lives through blood donations.”

Those who come out to give blood or platelets Sept. 1-30 will receive a coupon for a free haircut via email several days after their donation. The coupon is valid through Nov. 11, 2017, at participating Sport Clips locations. Donors must have a valid email address on record to receive the coupon.

“Sport Clips is proud to support the blood collection efforts of the Red Cross on a national level,” said Amanda Palm, corporate communications manager of Sport Clips. “There is always a need to maintain the blood supply in our country, and a free haircut is a simple way we can thank donors for their lifesaving donation.”

Donors are urged to make an appointment to donate using the free Blood Donor App, online at redcrossblood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). The Red Cross and Sport Clips encourage donors to use the hashtag #SavingLivesLooksGood to share their new looks and invite others to give.

How to donate blood

Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood donors can now save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, prior to arriving at the blood drive. 540 Graduate from Granville County Public Schools earning 9.6 Million in Scholarships

The 2017 graduates of Granville County Public schools participated in the final ceremonies this past Saturday under beautiful blue skies and a warm spring breeze. More than 540 students graduated from our five high schools, with thousands of supportive parents, relatives, friends and community members on hand to help celebrate the special milestone in a young person’s life.

This year’s graduating class was a particularly talented group, as evidenced by both the statistics and individual stories of success. This class of students earned more than $9.6 million dollars worth of scholarships – an all time record since the district has been tracking this information. More than 450, or 85% of the graduates were accepted into and plan to attend a 2 or 4 year college or university or proudly pledged to enroll in the armed services, and 10% had already secured employment. Several students were accepted to prestigious universities, as well as every single UNC institution of higher education.

Many student athletes were awarded substantial scholarships in various sports, including track, volleyball, softball, and even bowling! Other students received large academic scholarships, including ‘full-rides’ to NCSU, UNCG, Wingate, Peace and Winston-Salem. Future plans of the graduates span the entire spectrum, including students entering the fields of engineering, pre-med, Biochemistry, and Business. Others made plans for careers nursing, radiology, veterinary science, and agriculture. Several students will begin pursuing degrees in welding, with job offers already on the table. Other outliers include pilot’s school, cosmetology, and flight attendant’s school.

Regardless of the immediate next steps in these graduates’ plans, it is clear that Granville County Public Schools has helped prepare this talented group of young citizens for whatever lies ahead. Our community should be extremely proud of them, and feel confident that the next generation of citizens and community members will be well represented.

Oxford Prep Golf Sweeps Tar Roanoke Athletic Conference Regular Season

The Tar Roanoke Athletic Conference completed the regular season yesterday at the South Granville Country Club. There were two 9 hole matches yesterday and Oxford Preparatory School won both. Narrowly edging out Granville Central with a 180 to 181 win on the first match with Louisburg coming in at 208. OPS won the second match with a 186 to Louisburg’s 200 and Granville Central coming in at 203. With 2 wins yesterday OPS finished out the season with a sweep of all 6 conference matches for a season total of 1084, Granville Central 2nd with 1179, and Louisburg at 1206.

Top 6 Individual leaders for the TRAC going into the Conference Tournament are Reed Wheless – 206 (LHS), Jacob Bliss – 212 (OPS), Zack Currin – 214 (GCHS), Noah Greenway – 216 (OPS), Christian Rowe – 219 (LHS), and Brady Smith – 230 (GCHS). Nipping at the leaders heels are Adam Sizemore and Wesley Aiken that are 4 and 7 strokes out of the number 6 spot respectively.

The TRAC Team and Individual Conference Champions will be decided at the 18 hole Conference Tournament at Henderson Country Club on Monday, April 24th.

Teachers gain new skills through robotics training at VGCC

Vance-Granville Community College and the Advanced Manufacturing Skills Training Alliance (AMSTA) recently partnered to hold a five-part “Rover-Bot” Workshop for area teachers. The series was held on Thursday evenings in October and November in the electronics lab at VGCC’s South Campus, where the Electronics Engineering Technology program is based.

In the workshop, VGCC Engineering Technologies program head Wesley Williams taught the educators about basic electronics and programming while they assembled a “rover” robot, a small, autonomous moving vehicle. The Rover-Bot has two battery-powered motors that move independently, so it is driven like a tank, Williams explained. “Over the course of the workshop, we built the rover and learned how to drive it with a platform called Arduino, which is basically a small computer,” Williams said. “We then incorporated sensors that would activate based on light and temperature and other features. The teachers really enjoyed the building process and the hands-on nature of the class. They said they want to incorporate what they learned in their own classrooms, so I gave them links to more information and ideas.”

According to AMSTA Project Manager Stephanie Ayers, “the goal of the Rover-Bot workshop was to expand teachers’ knowledge of robotics and enable them to sponsor robotics clubs in their school or implement project-based learning in their classroom.”

Among those who attended all or part of the series were: Beverly Spivey-Judkins from Franklinton High School; Kelly Dixon and Fred Reed, both from Granville Central High School; Marva Burrell-Smith from J.F. Webb High School (Granville County); Kevin W. Moran and Traci Branch, both from Mt. Energy Elementary School (Granville County); Audra Neunkirchner from Northern Granville Middle School; Penny Collins and Pamela Huff, both from Northern Vance High School; and Henry Bobbitt from Warren County High School. Each teacher received continuing education credits for attending.

AMSTA is a partnership involving VGCC and the public school systems in Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren counties, who work together to prepare students in the region for careers in manufacturing. A grant from the North Carolina Education and Workforce Innovation Fund supported this workshop and other AMSTA projects. “By providing quality professional development activities that are relevant to manufacturing in our region, we increase our teachers’ ability prepare students to enter these careers,” Ayers said. “Also, by partnering with VGCC to provide these workshops, we have opened up lines of communication between K-12 teachers and community college instructors to share information and ideas about preparing students for advanced manufacturing careers.”

This was the first time Williams has conducted a project-based robotics course for schoolteachers; he offered a broader course in 2015 in partnership with AMSTA on various topics related to electronics and robotics.

VGCC offers both a two-year degree and a certificate in Electronics Engineering Technology (EET). The certificate is also available as a Career and College Promise (CCP) Pathway for eligible high school students. In the EET curriculum, students learn to apply basic engineering principles and technical skills to design, build, install, test, troubleshoot, repair, and modify developmental and production electronic components, equipment, and systems such as industrial/computer controls, manufacturing systems, communication systems and power electronic systems. Granville Chamber to host New Teacher Breakfast

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce and Granville Health System are sponsoring the annual New Teacher Breakfast on Friday, August 19th at 7:30 am at Granville Central High School, 2043 Sanders Road, Stem. This event welcomes and recognizes new employees to the Granville County School system and allows them an opportunity to meet local elected officials, as well as  business and agency leaders in Granville County.

Presiding will be Angela Allen, President of the Granville Chamber, with remarks from Dr. Lee Isley, CEO, Granville Health System.

Granville County Chamber banks, real estate, and insurance members are invited to set up business displays to provide information for the newcomers.
