TownTalk: G.R.A.C.E. Ministries Getting Ready for Pre-Thanksgiving Community Feeding

As G.R.A.C.E. Ministries prepares for its 8th annual pre-Thanksgiving community feeding this Saturday, Nov. 22, organizers say that folks can show up at the church or any of several locations throughout the city and county to get plates for themselves or to share with others.

Bobby West said this year’s goal is to serve up and distribute 2,000 plates of food, which will be lovingly served with a side of caring and prayers.

And what Thanksgiving meal would be complete without a slice of cake? When planning to serve 2,000, that’s a lot of cakes. They’ve gotten commitments for 85 so far, and West predicts that they could use another 15 or so.

“Sometimes, just a little meal means a lot,” West said on Monday’s TownTalk.

That food doesn’t plate itself, however, and West said volunteers are welcome to join the small army of volunteers who will gather at the church, located at 215 Crozier St., to start work by 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

More than half the plates – about 1,400 – will be delivered to the following locations:

  • Raleigh Road Baptist Church
  • West End Baptist Church on Dabney Drive
  • Auto Brite Car Wash across from Belk and Walmart
  • 506 E. Andrews Ave. near the standpipe
  • Delight in Manson
  • Little Hotel in Norlina

Individuals who come to G.R.A.C.E. Ministries for a meal can choose to dine in or take it to-go.

The meal preparation and distribution is a way for people “to reach out and love on their neighbors,” West said. “We need a whole lot more of that right now.”

The Local Skinny! GRACE Ministries Prepares Big Thanksgiving Meal

Bobby West said Saturday’s early Thanksgiving meal that GRACE Ministries and volunteers will be dishing up for the community is a way to feed people and nourish souls.

It will take “an army of volunteers,” West said, to prepare 2,000 plates at the 215 Crozier St. location, as well as deliver them to seven other sites across the county.

There will be pork loin and gravy, with all the trimmings, West said on Thursday’s segment of The Local Skinny! But those plates also come with a “side” of prayer, he added.

“Our goal is to pray with every meal delivered,” West said, whether those meals are getting picked up and delivered to shut-ins or just enjoyed by families who need a hot meal. “Prayer is shared with every plate,” he added.

“The most important thing is prayer,” West said, adding that it’s that prayer component the nourishes peoples’ souls. But he’s done this before, so he also knows that “the biggest thing is getting all that food ready” to be picked up by 11 a.m.

In addition to the GRACE Ministries location, plates will be available for pickup at the following locations:

  • West End Baptist Church, 619 Dabney Dr.
  • Room at the Cross, 235 Booth Ave.
  • Norlina Baptist Church, 402 Divison St., Norlina
  • Raleigh Road Baptist Church, 3892 Raleigh Rd.
  • Old Aycock gym, 2663 Vicksboro Rd.
  • Corner of Andrews Avenue and Water Street, near the standpipe
  • Grace Baptist Church, 1820 S. Clearview Dr.

The team of volunteers will fill 1,600 plates in about two hours’ time. “We couldn’t do it without the prayers and support” from across the community, he said. “We’ll get eight lines of people packing plates – it goes fast, too,” he added.

Working alongside other volunteers, whether old friends or new acquaintances, creates a humbling atmosphere for West and others at GRACE Ministries.

“You’re humbled and thankful that you can be a part of helping others,” he said. “We want to serve God any way we can.”

Grace Ministries will host the third annual “Too Beautiful For Earth” event on Saturday, Oct. 5 at its 215 Crozier St. location.

The event will be held from 12 noon to 3 p.m. and is held to honor babies who have lost their lives due to medical complications including miscarriage, preterm birth, stillborn, birth defects, SIDS or any type of pregnancy loss.

Come out to support this effort and the families affected by this type of loss. There will be speakers, crafts, a raffle and more.

TownTalk: Bobby West – Grace Ministries

Grace Ministries has a busy weekend on tap, with an outdoor concert on Friday evening and its annual Family Fun Day on Saturday.

Bobby West invites the community to join in the festivities for both events. The weather forecast is calling for nice weather each day, making conditions just right for what West and others at Grace Ministries has planned.

Texas-based Seventh Day Slumber will bring its Christian rock to the Friday event, West said on Monday’s TownTalk. The gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 7 p.m. Proceeds from the food and beverage concessions will benefit Rushing Water Outreach in Oxford; there is no charge for admission, but donations will be accepted at the gate, West said.

You should bring a lawn chair, but please don’t bring any outside food or beverages, he added.

Seating is first come, first served.

Then on Saturday, come back to Grace Ministries, located on Crozier Street, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to take part in the Family Fun Day. There will be lots of water games, including a slip n’ slide, for the kids to enjoy and hotdogs, watermelon, corn on the cob and more available throughout the day.

Backpacks filled with school supplies will be distributed, and West said he hoped to be able to give away between 150 and 200 by the end of the afternoon’s activities.

This weekend is just the beginning of a busy fall and holiday season for Grace Ministries, West said. They have plans to be at the Show, Shine, Shag and Dine in mid-October, and West said it would be a time for he and others to give out supplies and to pray with those who attend the car show.

They’ll be distributing meals across the area the Saturday before Thanksgiving, and then it’s on to the toy giveaway for Christmas.

“It’ll be here before you know it,” he said.

Grace Ministries helps people and families with its program called New Beginnings, designed to provide support for those struggling with addiction or substance abuse.

Whether facing those struggles or other types of challenges, including financial ones, West said it is the mission of Grace Ministries to offer support.

Eleven women recently completed GED programs at Grace Ministries, and West said the new graduates wore caps and gowns to the ceremony to mark the achievement.

There are 49 people enrolled in the next GED program that will begin soon.

The Local Skinny! Grace Ministries Plans 7th Annual Thanksgiving Meal

The 7th annual Grace Ministries Thanksgiving meal giveaway is taking shape and organizer Bobby West said the plan is to provide 3,000 meals to folks in the community on Saturday, Nov. 18.

In addition to the Grace Ministries location at 215 Crozier St., West said there are a number of locations where individuals across Vance, Granville and Warren counties can go to pick up to-go plates, filled with pork loin, vegetables, stuffing and a dessert.

The event gets underway at 11 a.m., but there’s a lot of preparation that goes in to making that happen, West said on Monday’s The Local Skinny!

He said he expects to feed 1,000 at the Crozier Street location – folks can dine there or pick up a takeout plate.

All the other locations are takeout only, and West said they could use some volunteers to help, beginning at 8:30 on the morning of Nov. 18. “We’re going to need 2,000 plates ready to go by 11 o’clock,” he said.

It’ll probably take 100 or so volunteers that morning, West said, adding that there will be six or seven lines set up to pack all the plates. “We’ll pack them up fast, get them out the door and to the locations,” he said.

It’s their biggest outreach effort of the year, and West said he’s grateful to the churches in the area that help out each year. “We couldn’t without support of the community and other churches,” he said. “God has been so good to us…we just do it as an act of kindness – the world can use some more kindness.”

And cakes. They need cakes – 160, truth be told, West said, for each of those 3,000 plates. If you can help out, give him a call at 252.432.7124.

Monetary donations may be sent to Grace Ministries, P.O. Box 316, Henderson, NC 27536.

Following is the list of satellite locations that will have plates ready for distribution:

  • Grace Baptist Church near fairgrounds;
  • South Henderson Church of God set up last year at Rose’s on Dabney Drive;
  • Room At The Cross, 235 Booth Ave.;
  • Rushing Waters Outreach in Oxford;
  • Norlina Baptist Church, Norlina;
  • Old Aycock gym, Vicksboro Road, by New Sandy Creek Baptist Church;

TownTalk: GRACE Ministries Thanksgiving Feast

Bobby West and others at G.R.A.C.E. Ministries will be humming right along on Saturday as they serve up pre-Thanksgiving meals for the community.

The public is welcome to come to the G.R.A.C.E. Ministries location, 215 Crozier St. beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, West said Wednesday on TownTalk.

Volunteers are welcome as well, beginning about 8:30 a.m., when the group will “get prayed up” before beginning the process of fixing about 2,000 plates to feed the community.

“I need about 1,000 plates packed and gone by 10:30,” West told John C. Rose. Several churches are picking up plates that will be distributed all across the county.

Grace Baptist Church, Norlina Baptist, Tungsten Baptist and West End Baptist are helping out in this effort, and New Sandy Creek Baptist is setting up a distribution site at the former Aycock School on Vicksboro Road.

“We have one purpose,” West said, “to serve and show love to our neighbors.”

This is the sixth year that the group has provided a meal before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Individuals who wish to support this ministry can send a check to G.R.A.C.E. Ministries, P.O. Box 316, Henderson, NC 27536.

But stay tuned for other ways to help with upcoming projects like the annual toy drive, he said.

West said G.R.A.C.E. Ministries is partnering with churches in Vance, Warren and Franklin counties this year to conduct its toy drive.

Gently used toys – no plush or stuffed toys, please – will be accepted and the toy distribution will take place on Saturday, Dec. 17. Call West at 252.432.7124 to schedule a donation at his workplace or at G.R.A.C.E. Ministries.

Projects like these are considered a win-win for the community and for the volunteers.

“It’s a humbling experience when you do something good for somebody,” he said.

TownTalk: G.R.A.C.E. Ministries Reaches Out To Those With Addictions

Jamie Elliott hopes to have a good turnout at the G.R.A.C.E. Ministries Addiction and Recovery Rally this Saturday. It’s a time for people to learn more about community resources for those who need help, and it’s also a time to hear from individuals in recovery who have turned their lives around.

The rally will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10 at G.R.A.C.E. Ministries, 961 Burr St. “I’m looking forward to this weekend,” Elliott told John C. Rose on Wednesday’s Town Talk. And he plans to stream the event live on social media for those who can’t attend but want to see and hear the day’s activities. Visit https://www.graceofhenderson.org/ to learn more.

Several men and women, all recovering addicts, are going to be on the agenda to share their stories, Elliott said, “how they first started in addiction and where they are now.”

Whether through information from community agencies or form first-person testimonials, the main focus of the event is education.

“We want to educate families on what drug addiction has done…you have to be there to listen and see with your own eyes what addiction does” to individuals and to their families, Elliott said.

People find themselves in the throes of addiction from a variety of ways, whether it’s becoming dependent on prescribed pain medications for a medical condition or to block traumatic experiences.

“Once the drug wears off, the trauma comes back,” Elliott said.  Addiction knows no age – Elliott said he’s worked with pre-teens as well as a woman in her 80’s who abused pills – “it all started from her messing up her hip,” he explained. “We have to educate people on how to use medicine the right way,” he added.

Addiction so often starts out small, and then snowballs out of control. It starts out with one seemingly harmless interaction with drugs or alcohol and then progresses to more and more dangerous abuse. “Then you see your life just disappearing in front of your eyes,” Elliott said.

And it’s not just the addict who is affected, he said. “People tend to forget about the families,” Elliott added. Family members watch helplessly – or enable the addicted person – “they don’t know what to do or what to say…they worry themselves sick, day and night.”

The Saturday rally is designed to promote awareness – opening people’s eyes to the dangers of addiction, the possibilities for recovery and for the resources in the community to help people get the help they need.

“The more people we can get together, the more people will see what’s going on,” Elliott said.
