TownTalk: 62nd Annual Henderson Shrine Club Fish Fry Wednesday, May 13

The 62nd annual Henderson Shrine Club Fish Fry is coming up – make plans to eat in or take out on Wednesday, May 13 at Tony’s Auto on Raleigh Road.

This is the second year at this location, and long-time Henderson Shriner Donald Seifert said the club is grateful for the partnership.

Seifert said, “Tony and his wife Tammy have been really good to us making their space available. As long as we can go there, that certainly would be our location of choice,” he said on Thursday’s segment of TownTalk.

Plates are $12 and will be served from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. But Henderson Shrine Club President Billy Currin shared some friendly advice: “I wouldn’t wait until seven o’clock” to pull up to the drive-thru lane or pull in to eat in at Tony’s 50’s diner-style establishment.

“I’m looking forward to May 13,” Currin said. “The community has always been gracious in supporting us and coming out.”

Last year’s fish fry was a good one – it netted about $10,000 for the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Greenville, S.C. Organizers are hopeful this year’s event will be just as good or even better.

Currin said nothing’s ever perfect, but last year’s fundraiser came pretty close.

“Last year was just about perfect, Currin said, who’s got 25 or so fish fry fundraisers under his belt. “Plates were on time – everything went well. We sold the last plate right at 7. It just worked out great.”

Jennifer Ellis has helped coordinate volunteers for at least 16 years and she said a key component is the assembly line, making sure the filled plates – 2 pieces of freshly cooked fish, slaw, potato salad and hush puppies – get to where they’re needed, whether that’s to keep the drive-thru flowing or inside Tony’s for those who want to dine in.

Ellis said, “It takes a lot of people to make this a success – for the children.”

It’s all for the children – children who get care at the Shriner’s Hospital – that volunteers, Shriners and the community come together each year to raise money.

“It warms my heart that everyone can come together for a good cause…our children hold a special place in our hearts,” Ellis said.

Contact Ellis at 252. 213.3685 if you’d like to volunteer to help. She’ll find a spot for you.

Over the years, Shriners, their friends and families have racked up countless volunteer hours to put on more than 60 fish fry fundraisers, which have contributed a cumulative $570,000 to the hospital, Currin said.

Families of Shriner’s Hospital’s patients don’t get a bill for the care their child receives. Neither do they have to pay for transportation, lodging or meals while they are there.

“I think that’s a great thing, especially this day and time,” Currin said. “The families are in a time of need – you’re worried about your child…lost wages. But you have a hospital to provide a service.

“To me, it does my heart well to take off a day from work to volunteer and give to the Shriner’s hospital. I just think it’s a great thing.”

The group also is bringing the calliope out of storage to provide its unique musical sounds to the event.

And there’s one more added bonus this year, thanks to Sanford – ice cream!

Eat-in patrons can purchase a cup of Tony’s famous soft-serve for $1.

WIZS Radio is sponsoring the ice cream extra by purchasing the ingredients, which allows each $1 donation to go directly to the Shriner’s Hospital.

Seifert said Durham Coca-Cola and Hager Rand with Rand Beverages is sponsoring beverages – Coke products, of course – that are available for purchase for eat-in customers, which adds to the net proceeds, too.

There are 20 Shriner’s Hospitals across the U.S. that provide world-class pediatric care regardless of a family’s ability to pay. Seifert said that’s what makes it such a worthwhile cause. “That’s one of the reasons our fish frys have been successful,” he noted. “Because people in our town and in our communities recognize it as a very worthy cause. And we thank them.”

ACTS of Henderson Fish Fry Fundraiser February 1st

When was the last chance you got to help a local food pantry by, well, eating?

Area residents will get that exact opportunity at the Feb. 1 fundraiser at 220 Restaurant to benefit Area Christians Together in Service (ACTS).

Lee Anne Peoples, executive director of ACTS, said tickets are $8 each and are available now. Advance sales are preferred, Peoples said, but not required. The fundraiser plates include trout, French fries and cole slaw. “We’d love for people to come and join us,” she said. The fundraiser is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

ACTS, located at 201 S. William St., has been a beehive of activity, she told host John C. Rose during Monday’s Town Talk.  “We’ve seen about double the amount of people in the last few months than we saw prior to COVID.” The fundraiser will help the organization continue to provide hot lunches on weekdays as well as hep to keep the pantry stocked.

“We’ve been serving between 120 and 160 or 170 (people) Monday through Friday,” Peoples said of the hot lunch program. She and cook Thomas Blackwell are the only paid staff, she added. “We’re almost completely volunteer-driven,” Peoples said. “We would not be able to do what we do without volunteers.”

More lunches are headed out the door each day because people are taking food to family, friends and neighbors who need the assistance. “COVID  has increased the numbers of people we’ve been serviing, but it has decreased the number of volunteers,” she said.

Peoples said tickets are available at ACTS from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. – and ACTS will happily take donations to help fill the pantry, too. In short supply are items like canned fruits and vegetables, 1-pound or 2-pound bags of rice or beans, boxes of crackers packaged in plastic sleeves such as saltines. Also needed are gallon-size cans of food that can be used for lunches, she said.

Of course, monetary donations are always acceptable, Peoples said. Mail checks to ACTS, P.O. Box 25, Henderson, NC 27536.

The last 220 fundraiser to benefit ACTS sold between 800 and 1,000 tickets, People said. ACTS board members have tickets for sale. Board members, in addition to Peoples, are: Hope Breedlove, Gwenn Bridges, Ulice Hill Evans, Pam Jackson, Candy Moore, Connie L. Markham, Jack Richardson, Abidan Paul Shah, CeCe Tucker, Linda Weaver, Argatha White-Vass and Rev. Johnny Yount.

ACTS is very fortunate to have such a dedicated board, she said. “They really care about their community,” said Peoples. “It’s so important to have people like that in a leadership role,” she added.

55th Annual Henderson Shrine Club Fish Fry, Wed., May 16

The 55th Annual Henderson Shrine Club Fish Fry will be held Wednesday, May 16 in the Vance Square Shopping Center on Raleigh Road in Henderson, across from Supply Line Country Market and M.R. Williams, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Plates are $8 a piece and all proceeds go to support Shriners Hospitals for Children. The event is all-you-can-eat, eat-in or take-out. Delivery is also available for orders of 10 or more.

The group expects to serve a total of 2,500 plates overall, with 800 – 1,000 of those plates delivered by Shriners or volunteers to local businesses.

Volunteers are welcomed and may show up the day of the event to help.

Shriners Ray Fields and Donald Seifert were on “Town Talk” on Monday to provide details about the event. Fields said,  “The fish fry would not be possible or successful without the support of the businesses and people of Vance County.”

The pair reminded the public that this is just as much a positive social event as it is an eating occasion.

Fields informed WIZS listeners that the Shriners currently support 22 hospitals and three burn centers. The money raised from Wednesday’s event will go toward further supporting those efforts.

WIZS will be broadcasting live on location.

On Monday, April 23 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., Community Partners of Hope, which manages the local men’s homeless shelter and Hope House, will host its major fundraiser at 220 Seafood, 1812 North Garnett Street.

Community advocate and devoted volunteer Betty Boyd said, “Our dream is to offer a shelter that is open year-round and is able to provide employment and health resources to the men that we serve.”

Dr. Ron Cava, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Community Partners of Hope, said, “Community Partners of Hope is the only organization serving homeless men in at least the three counties of Vance, Granville, and Warren Counties and perhaps additionally Franklin.”

Boyd said, “When we closed the doors on the morning of April 1, 2018, it marked the 10th season of service for our emergency shelter for homeless men. The shelter is open from November 1 – March 31 each season. 65 men found a safe space, hot shower, warm evening meal, and a comfortable bed through the season. Hope House, our transitional home for men, was opened in April 2015. It is presently home to 6 men, five of those shelter residents this past season.”

Donations are tax deductible and will be accepted at the event or may be mailed to PO Box 1791, Henderson, NC 27536.

Cava said, “The ministry enjoys widespread support from a very diverse segment of our population. I dare say that CPOH does more with less than any other comparable ministry. ”

Volunteer opportunities are available, and your patronage at the fish fry or a gift would be most appreciated and used well to serve the community.
