Oxford Designated As Affiliate Main Street America Program

The City of Oxford and the Downtown Oxford Economic Development Commission have been designated as an Affiliate Main Street America™ program for meeting rigorous performance standards.

Each year, Main Street America and its partners announce the list of Affiliate programs to recognize their commitment to creating meaningful improvements to their downtowns using preservation-based economic development and community revitalization through the Main Street Approach™.

The City of Oxford and DOEDC’s performance is annually evaluated by North Carolina Main Street which works in partnership with Main Street America to identify the local programs that are committed to comprehensive, place-based revitalization efforts and achieving meaningful community outcomes.

We are thrilled to acknowledge this year’s 383 Affiliate Main Street America programs and their commitment to advance economic vitality and quality of life in their downtowns and commercial districts,” Main Street America President and CEO Patrice Frey. “During another incredibly challenging year, these programs demonstrated the power of the Main Street movement to respond to the needs of their communities, driving essential local recovery efforts, supporting small businesses, and nurturing vibrant neighborhoods.”

In 2021, Main Street America programs generated $5.76 billion in local reinvestment, helped open 6,601 net new businesses, generated 30,402 net new jobs, catalyzed the rehabilitation of 10,595 historic buildings, and leveraged 1,427,729 volunteer hours. On average, for every dollar that a Main Street program spent to support its operations, it generated $19.34 of new investment back into Main Street communities.

Main Street America leads a movement committed to strengthening communities through preservation based economic development in older and historic downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts. For more than 40 years, Main Street America has provided a practical, adaptable, and impactful framework for community-driven, comprehensive revitalization through the Main Street Approach™. Popular “Quittin’ Time” Returns To Downtown Oxford May 5

Quittin’ Time in Oxford is set to kick off the 2022 season next week, inviting folks to hang around downtown after the workday ends to enjoy unwinding at a number of local eateries.

This is the second year for Quittin’ Time, and eight local restaurants and venues are gearing up to create small plates and drinks for their patrons during the 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. window that begins Thursday, May 5 and continues on Thursdays through the end of June.

Visit Uptown 101, The Hub, Main St. Oasis, Strong Arm Bakery and Kitchen, Tobacco Wood Brewery, Harvest, Milano’s and The Orpheum to purchase hand-crafted small plates, craft cocktails, irresistible desserts – there may be some of last year’s favorites back on the menu, too!

Menu offerings will change from week to week, so follow along on social media for hints on what’s to come!

There’s no need to RSVP for the weekly free event – the only cost is for what patrons choose to purchase from the different locations as they stroll through downtown Oxford.

Downtown Arts And Wine Festival April 23 In Oxford

Oxford will be the site of the first Downtown Arts and Wine Festival – mark Saturday, April 23 on your calendars for an afternoon of strolling and sipping during the outdoor event.

Wine by the glass and beer will be sold at The Hub on Main, which is partnering with the Oxford Arts Council to host the festival.

There will be live music and food vendors from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., as well as live artist demonstrations throughout the afternoon. The arts and wine festival is free; purchase tickets online here or at The Hub on Main for a featured wine-tasting event from the wineries that will be present.

DOEDC Seeks Revitalization Input From Downtown Merchants

The DOEDC would like to invite you to join the conversation about downtown revitalization in Oxford, and how we can plan and execute changes together. Join us Wednesday, February 23 for a presentation from The North Carolina League of Municipalities own Julie Metz; lunch will still be provided by Strong Arm. The Downtown Oxford Economic Development Corporation is hosting a meeting next week to hear from downtown merchants about next steps in downtown revitalization.

The event is scheduled to begin at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at The Orpheum of Oxford. Lunch will be provided by Strong Arm Baking; participants who want to eat lunch should reserve their seat by Friday, Jan. 7.

Julie Metz, with the N.C. League of Municipalities, will be on hand to discuss her involvement with the city of Goldsboro as the downtown development director for more than 20 years. That city’s downtown – which once had a 75 percent vacancy rate – has been transformed, with business start-ups, private investment and building energy and excitement from the community.

The DOEDC invites merchants to join the conversation about downtown revitalization in Oxford, and to learn how best to plan and execute changes together.

Repair Café NC Information Event Coming To Oxford July 15

An organization called Repair Café NC is having an informational meeting for Granville County residents on Thursday evening at Tobacco Wood Brewing Co.

Repair Café NC has numerous programs across the state, and it’s a way to connect people who have broken household items with others in the community who can fix them. The local organizers are Oxford resident Tom Fick and Teresa Baker, the county’s recycling coordinator.

Sometimes a simple repair is all it takes to keep an item working – and keeping it out of the landfill.

According to the group’s website, Repair Café “brings together people to share skills and solve problems. Valuable practical knowledge is getting passed on. Things are being used for longer and don’t have to be thrown away.”

The event is from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Tobacco Wood Brewing Co., located at 117 Wall St., Oxford.

Downtown Oxford Candy Stroll Canceled; City Recommends No Neighborhood Trick-or-Treat

In light of current COVID-19 conditions, the anticipated Halloween Spooktacular Candy Stroll, hosted by the Downtown Oxford Economic Development Commission, has been canceled for 2020.

Additionally, the City of Oxford is recommending the “community-wide/neighborhood” Halloween candy distribution not take place for 2020.

Hot Sauce Contest 2020

Downtown Oxford Announces Cancellation of Annual Hot Sauce Contest & Festival

Due to growing concerns of COVID–19 and guidelines surrounding physical distancing and enhanced precautions issued by the State of North Carolina, the Downtown Oxford Economic Development Corporation (DOEDC) Board, along with input from the Hot Sauce Committee and the City of Oxford, has decided to cancel the 14th Annual Hot Sauce Contest & Festival for the coming date of September 12, 2020. There will be no rescheduling this year.

As stated by a DOEDC Board spokesperson, “We do not feel comfortable going ahead with an event estimated to bring in approximately 15,000 people without being able to provide the necessary measures to keep everyone safe. Furthermore, we feel the reduction of the festival’s footprint to a small, less engaging event would damage the current reputation of this long-standing, local event.”

The DOEDC Board understands the sadness and frustration this news brings, however, the Board feels this action better serves the public safety of our citizens, businesses and visitors.

Granville’s Veterans Parade to Honor Military Personnel & Families

The Annual Granville County Veterans Parade honors all those who have or are currently serving in the military and their families. Please come out and show your support on Sunday, November 10, 2019, in Downtown Oxford.

The parade starts at 3 p.m. and will leave from Belle Street, take a left onto Williamsboro Street, a right onto College Street and then right onto McClanahan Street ending in front of the Oxford Fire Station.

Due to the amount of rain expected via weather forecasts, Downtown Oxford leadership has moved the day for the Spooktacular Candy Stroll trick-or-treat event to Friday, November 1, 2019, from 3:30 – 5 p.m.

Trick-or-treat was originally scheduled for Thursday, October 31.

Children ages 12 and under only and in costume, please!
