Barberio Named To Lead Granville Senior Center’s CLL Program

Russ Barberio has been named the new coordinator of the Creative Lifelong Learning (CLL) program run by Granville County Senior Services. Barberio takes over for Marilyn Howard who is retiring from Granville County at the end of June.

Barberio came to North Carolina in 1982 to be the plant controller at Max Factor Cosmetics in Oxford and stayed in the area after leaving that job to work as a computer software consultant.

In retirement, Barberio had the chance to focus more on his hobbies, including working with the North  Carolina Genealogical Society to promote the organization while working to educate genealogists on research techniques. He also enjoys camping, reading, classical music, Shakespeare, and North Carolina history (particularly the Revolutionary War). After experiencing the rich array of classes available through the Granville County CLL program, Barberio jumped at the chance to lead the program upon Howard’s retirement.

“This program has been administered so successfully by Marilyn for the last six years,” said Barberio.  “She will be sorely missed, but she has left such a solid foundation for us to continue to build on.”

He holds a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Utah and a bachelor’s degree in Management from Utah State University. Barberio lives in Henderson with his wife of 57 years, Diane. They have three children and four grandchildren.

The Creative Lifelong Learning program was established in 2017 through a generous endowment and is modeled after the OLLI programs at Duke and N.C. State universities. The program is committed to offering opportunities to stimulate the mind, uplift the spirit and enhance the well-being of adult learners through a wide range of  educational programs, physical activities and social events.

The Granville County Senior Center is located at 107 Lanier St. in Oxford and the South Granville Senior Center is located at 114 Douglas Dr. in Creedmoor. The North Granville Senior Center is currently located at 318 US Highway 15 South in Stovall but construction is scheduled to begin this summer on a new center located in downtown Stovall on Oxford Street.

Granville’s Creative Lifelong Learning (CLL) Classes Continue

The Fall calendar of classes, interactive activities and educational trips is winding down for the Granville County Senior Services’ Creative Lifelong Learning (CLL) program, with registration for Winter course offerings coming soon. Offering a variety of programming for all interests, the new tagline for the CLL program is “Never Stop Learning.”

Completing the current season are several courses scheduled during the month of December. Registration is still open for these final classes:

  • “Egypt’s Sacred Sites and Spiritual Journey” will be held on Monday, Dec. 2 at 1 p.m. This class will be instructed by Peggy Moore, an instructor at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Learn about Egypt’s ancient history and the legends of gods and goddesses, as well as the pyramids of Giza, the temples in Aswan and in Luxor and Moore’s travels to other sites;
  • A demonstration on Mary Kay Skincare will be held on Monday, Dec. 2 from 3 until 5 p.m., facilitated by Ella Fleming. This is an interactive class for participants to learn about their own skin types, as well as offering an afternoon of fellowship and fun;
  • On Thursday, Dec. 5, have “A Cup of Christmas Tea” as participants learn the art of Dutch tea bag folding while learning the story behind the classic poem. This class will be instructed by Maxine Chauvaux at 1:30 p.m.;
  • The discussion group, “North Carolina, Our Home” continues to meet on the second Tuesday of each month. This month, the interest group is scheduled to meet on Dec. 10 at 9:30 a.m.;
  • The art of Barn Quilt Painting will be taught on Dec. 12 at 10 a.m. by instructor Nancy Peele. A short history of barn quilts will also be shared with students, as well as a hands-on painting of a quilt pattern;
  • On Dec.13, “Crafts for Every Season” continues with the making of a wooden snowman. This class follows other seasonal projects such as a decoupage wooden tray, a mason jar candle holder and a clay pot scarecrow and is being taught by Christine Luscavich.

All classes are taught at the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford, located at 107 Lanier Street.

A course schedule for Winter is now being developed, with classes that will include Tai Chi, Spanish, Sewing, Line Dancing, Photography, Basic Defense, Arts and Crafts, and other topics. Also to be scheduled are courses such as the Criminal Justice System and The Road to World War I, as well as a discussion of the book “Freedom Road.” The popular “My Former Life” series also continues as local residents share their professional and personal experiences that made them who they are today.

Those interested in serving as instructors for the Winter season are asked to contact Marilyn Howard at the Senior Center in Oxford.

Participants do not have to be “seniors” to participate, as the Creative Lifelong Learning Program is open to any resident over the age of 18. As of the month of November, more than 250 CLL members have participated in this program. This the second full year that the CLL program has been offered to residents of Granville County.

Granville’s Creative Lifelong Learning Program Gears Up for Fall

A full calendar of classes, interactive activities and educational trips have been scheduled through Granville County Senior Services’ Creative Lifelong Learning (CLL) program, which offers a wide variety of programming for all interests. Courses range from “Beginning Tai Chi” and a “Basic Self-Defense” class to “Conversational Spanish” and “Nutrition.”

This the second full year that the CLL program has been offered to residents of Granville County, as well as those outside the area. Even though early renewal and membership ended on August 15, anyone can join CLL and register for various classes throughout the year.

According to Senior Services Director Kathy May, the Creative Lifelong Learning program is modeled after the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offered at Duke and N.C. State Universities, as well as other senior center programming in the Triangle. The suggestion for a similar program was made by a local retired couple, who also established an endowment fund which pays for course instructors.

Through the work of a steering committee, led by CLL Coordinator Marilyn Howard, many interests have been identified and instructors scheduled for a wide variety of course offerings based on member requests, class leader expertise and balance in the curriculum, with most classes being held at the Senior Center in Oxford. Classes vary in length, with sessions that range from interactive hour-long workshops to day-long trips and/or lectures.

“What we are trying to do is to fill a void in the community,” May said about the CLL program. “We have so many baby boomers here who want to stay active and be stimulated. We are excited to be able to offer this program to all of our citizens.”

The first week of the CLL program kicks off with “The Study of Mark” by instructor Pat Cox, which will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays (until Dec. 19) from 8:30 until 10 a.m. For those interested in learning Tai Chi, a 9:30 a.m. class, “Beginning Tai Chi,” is offered on Tuesday mornings until Dec. 31, as well as a “Tai Chi Continuation” class, offered at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays. These hour-long classes are taught by Peter Kay.

Laura Gabel will instruct an intermediate Spanish class beginning Sept. 4 at 11 a.m. and continuing through Nov. 27, with Kathy Wolford offering a 1:30 p.m. class in “Wire Weaving” each Thursday from Sept. 5 until Oct. 17.

A Basic Defense class will also be offered, with instructor Brent Bedwell. This class will be held on Mondays at 7 p.m. beginning  Sept. 9 and scheduled through Oct. 28.

Back by popular demand, the Young at Heart Chorus will meet at Oxford Methodist Church on Mondays at 11 a.m. beginning Sept. 9. This group is under the direction of Sarah Lewis and there is no cost for returning members.

On the second Tuesday of each month, the “North Carolina, Our Home” interest group will resume meetings at 9:30 a.m. and will have their first meeting of the new CLL calendar on Sept. 10. This meeting is free and open to the public, with no enrollment or membership required.

And new to the CLL curriculum is the “My Former Life” series, which offers a glimpse into the professional experiences of Granville County seniors and their careers before retirement. Cynthia Salzhauer will kick off this new offering with a presentation of her background in managing one of the largest ice-skating rinks on the east coast. This session is also offered at no charge to those interested in attending.

Many other classes will follow in coming weeks which include “Clogging,” “The History of Granville County,” “The Romanov Dynasty” and others as more instructors and course offerings are being made available.

Creative Lifelong Learning Program Gears Up for New Season

The Creative Lifelong Learning (CLL) program, sponsored by Granville County Senior Services, has completed its 2018/2019 schedule, with organizers preparing for the 2019/2020 course offerings.

Almost 300 Granville County residents participated in the Fall 2018/Spring 2019 program, which included a variety of courses, activities and educational trips. Topics included Conversational Spanish, Marketing and Advertising, Tai Chi as Physical Therapy and many others, some of which were not limited to local seniors, but were open to any participant over the age of 18.

The CLL program will continue to be open to Granville County adults, ages 50+, as well as to those outside the county and/or over the age of 18. The program is now renewing memberships for the coming year, as well as accepting new members.

Among many new topics/experiences scheduled for Fall 2019, CLL will offer the educational series “My Former Life.” This course will focus on the professional experiences of Granville County seniors and their careers before retirement. According to organizers, the course will provide an understanding of some unique career choices and will offer a glimpse into the depth of knowledge of our senior citizen population.

New teachers are now being recruited for the upcoming Fall and Spring season and new classes are being developed on an ongoing basis. If interested in becoming involved, teacher applications are available online at www.granvillecounty.org/residents/senior-services/.

Participation in this program continues to be encouraged and new CLL members are welcome.
