Registration Open For Upcoming Master Gardener Training That Begins Feb. 9

Maybe you’ve always wanted to know the difference between a gardenia and a hydrangea. Or maybe you want to add to that green-thumb skill set that you’ve had for years. In either case, the Master Gardener program may be just the thing for gardeners, new and experienced.

The next class of Master Gardeners will commence on Feb. 9, 2023, according to information from Paul McKenzie, horticulture agent for the N.C. Cooperative Extension in Vance and Warren counties.

Applications for the 15-week training program are being accepted now, McKenzie said. The fee is $125.

The Master Gardener program is a combination of education, community service and outreach. Upon completion, participants will engage in a variety of garden-related activities and project alongside an existing group of dedicated volunteers.

The class will meet on Thursday mornings, and will cover all aspects of gardening including fruits, vegetables, weeds, insects, diseases, trees, shrubs, turf and more.

The class location will alternate between Henderson and Warrenton.

Participants with specialized skills – from public speaking to photography – can help the group as it participates in volunteer projects throughout the community.  Recent volunteer projects demonstration gardens, newsletters, gardening workshops and seminars, youth education and more.

Coop Extension’s Annual Symposium to Focus on ‘Conservation Through Gardening’

Join the Vance/Warren Extension Master Gardener volunteers on Saturday, March 28, 2020, for the annual Garden Symposium entitled “Petals, Pollinators & Passerines” at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market. The market is located at 210 Southpark Dr. in Henderson.

The theme this year is “conservation through gardening,” with lessons on how garden practices can help birds, bees and native plants.

Outstanding presenters include Dr. Elsa Youngsteadt, noted pollinator researcher at NCSU and author of The Bees of North Carolina; Dr. Annabel Renwick, native plants curator at Duke Gardens; and Christina Harvey with the Wake County chapter of Audubon North Carolina.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with the program starting at 9 a.m. sharp. Register by March 17 for the early bird price of only $30, which includes refreshments and lunch.

There will also be an optional afternoon workshop on Upcycling which will demonstrate how to make garden treasures out of items usually found in the trash or recycling bin. Pre-registration is strongly preferred.

Woodland Owner Workshops Offer Tips From Planning to Harvesting

Whether you own 10 acres of woodlands or 1,000 acres, proper planning and management offer countless benefits. Woodland owners who follow a professionally prepared management plan are likely to reap rewards in the form of improved aesthetics, better wildlife habitat and, in the end, more profit.

To learn more, woodland owners can attend a series of free classes in Henderson and Oxford that will take them through the whole process from planning to harvest. The instructors will include professionals from the NC Forest Service and NCSU Extension Forestry. Each class will also feature landowner testimonials.

The classes will meet at 7 p.m. on February 13, May 14, August 13 and November 12, 2020. Topics to be covered include planning, planting, thinning, prescribed fire, harvest and much more. Classes will meet at the Granville Expo Center (2/13 & 8/13) and at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market (5/14 & 11/12).
