Barn Cat Program Saves Feral Cats/Kittens

Community Partnership for Pets works with the Warren County Animal Ark and Warrenton Animal Clinic to help reduce the unwanted pet population in the area and to provide pet owners with options to care for their animals. A recent $50,000 grant will go a long way to help spay and neuter pets belonging to families in Warren County, said Mary Cervini, president and founder of Community Partnership for Pets.The grant comes from the Ken Barlow Family Charitable Trust in honor of Barlow’s childhood friend, Bobby Blaylock.”We wish to express our sincere appreciation to Mr. Barlow for his generosity and compassion for animals in Warren County,” Cervini said.In March 2021 the partnership offered a program that reduced the cost to spay and neuter cats – domestic or feral – from $40 to $10.The Ark, which is the county’s animal shelter, also started a Barn Cat Program designed to get feral cats and kittens out of the shelter as soon as possible. Often, feral cats and kittens are not adoptable and the barn cat program is a way to give this type of feline a second chance. The cats are spayed or neutered and then offered to families who want outdoor cats on their property or barn instead of in their home. These cats will no longer reproduce but can live out their life in an environment they are familiar with. Anyone wanting one of these cats can call the Ark for more information. There is no cost to the family who wants one of these cats; however, they must agree to provide these cats with food, water and shelter as you would any animal in your care.

According to information from the Ark, the number of cats euthanized has dropped to 18 percent from 44 percent and the number of cats leaving the Ark alive is up to 79 percent from 51 percent.  In addition, almost two dozen cats have been rehomed through the Barn Cat Program.

 

Vance Co. Animal Shelter Recipient of Three New Grants

Vance County Animal Services is pleased to announce that they are a recipient of two $2,500 Spay/Neuter Grants from Community Partnership for Pets; received from The Reynolds Foundation and The Doris Day Foundation.

These grants were applied for and will be used for:

  • Spay/Neuter for pets of citizens in the community that do not qualify for the state-funded spay/neuter program.

Vance County Animal Services is also pleased to announce that they are a recipient of a $5,709 Medical Grant from Community Partnership for Pets; received from DJ&T Foundation.

This grant was applied for and will be used for:

  • Medical services deemed necessary by the veterinarian for citizens’ animal(s) at the time of spay/neuter.

These funds will help citizens in our community get their personal pets spayed/neutered to reduce the number of unwanted animals being born in the community. This will also reduce the number of animal intakes at the Vance County Animal Shelter.

Community Partnership for Pets to Expand Operations in 2019

Community Partnership for Pets, Inc. (CPPI) started our new statewide spay/neuter mission on July 1, 2017.  We are currently working with nine counties with additional counties coming on-board in 2019.

Our work includes setting up, funding and managing spay/neuter programs in poor, rural NC counties. We work side-by-side with county-run animal shelters, as they are responsible for handling all the stray and unwanted dogs and cats in their county.

The Vance County Animal Shelter works each day to ensure as many dogs and cats as possible are able to find loving, forever homes. They realize that adoption/placement alone is not the answer.  Spay/Neuter is key in reducing the steady flow of unwanted animals coming into the shelter. Working with local veterinarians in the county, plus a mobile spay/neuter van that travels to the county once a month, VCAS and CPPI are steadily increasing the number of spay/neuter surgeries that are completed each month.

Every dollar donated to CPPI is important.

A $5 donation will vaccinate a dog or cat for rabies; $35 will neuter and vaccinate a male cat; $100 will spay/neuter, vaccinate and microchip a dog.

This grant was applied for and will be used for spay/neuter for pets of citizens in the community that do not qualify for the state-funded spay/neuter program.

These funds will help citizens in our community get their personal pets spayed/neutered to reduce the number of unwanted animals being born in the community. This will also reduce the number of animal intakes at the Vance County Animal Shelter.

Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Program Now Offered in Warren, Granville & Vance

Mary Cervini, founder of Community Partnership for Pets based out of Western NC, was recently on WIZS’ Town Talk to discuss her organization’s spay/neuter program now offered in partnership with the Warren County Animal Shelter and Warrenton Animal Clinic.

With $13,000 ear-marked for Warren County specifically, funding is available to assist qualifying, low-income Warren County families with the cost of surgery for their dog or cat.

Families must provide proof of income and may purchase their voucher at the Warren County Animal Shelter, 142 Rafters Lane, Warrenton. Dr. Amy O’Malley, veterinarian with the Warrenton Animal Clinic will perform the surgery locally.

Vouchers are $10 for cats and $20 for dogs of any size and cover the pet’s surgery, rabies and distemper vaccinations and pain medication.

Starting in Henderson County in 2005, Community Partnership for Pets currently provides funding for spay/neuter programs in Vance, Granville, Warren, Pitt, Polk and Rutherford counties.

According to Cervini, the program focuses on two main criteria when selecting a county to partner with: an increasing number of animals in county shelters and the percentage of the population living below the poverty line.

“People love their animals, regardless of income,” Cervini said. “Families that are struggling to put food on the table love their pets, but sometimes the cost of surgery is expensive.”

Cervini hopes that the affordable pricing of the surgery/vaccination package will help relieve the financial burden and bring attention to the importance of spaying or neutering pets. “We will never get to the end of homeless animals until we provide spay and neuter programs as well as adoption and rescue programs.”

Families must provide proof of income and can purchase their voucher at the Warren County Animal Shelter, 142 Rafters Lane, Warrenton. The cost of the vouchers is $10 for cats and $20 for dogs. The voucher will cover the pet’s surgery, rabies and distemper vaccinations and pain medication.

Community Partnership for Pets Continues Local Support (March 2018)

Frankie Nobles, chief of Vance County Animal Services, informed WIZS News of additional support from Community Partnership for Pets.

In a press release, Nobles said, “Vance County Animal Services is pleased to announce that they are a recipient of a $5,000.00 Spay/Neuter Grant from Community Partnership for Pets.”

The grant was applied for on March 12, 2018 and will be used for:

Spay/Neuter for citizens in the community who are considering adopting pets from Vance County Animal Shelter.

Free spay/neuter for pets that have been at the shelter for an extended period of time and are deemed for rescue only.

Nobles said in the press release, “These funds will be a great help to getting animals out of the shelter. We anticipate with this assistance more citizens will be able to adopt and more rescue organizations will be interested in rescuing the animals from Vance County.”
