Wanna Be In A Movie? Casting Call For ‘Resurrecting Eden’ April 20 At Clearview Church

There’s a movie being made right here in Henderson, and producers want to give locals first crack at a casting call on Saturday, Apr. 20.

Budding performers are encouraged to “bring your A game” – A for Acting – when they head over to Clearview Church to meet with producers of “Resurrecting Eden,” the setting of which is Back to Eden Plantation off Satterwhite Point Road.

According to information from the Rev. Dr. Almice Floyd Gill, pastor of Blessed Trinity Ministries, the film’s director and producers will be on hand at the casting call, looking for local talent to be part of the film.

Kenneth Spellman owns Back to Eden, and he’s been working for several years to create a living museum of sorts at the historical property, once owned by the Wortham family. Among the structures on the property is a house where enslaved people lived before the Civil War.

Clearview Church has partnered with Spellman and it’s there that anyone interested is invited to participate. The casting call will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Clearview Church is located at 3485 U.S. 158 Business.

“This is an exciting time – I can’t wait to see it unfold,” said Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce President Sandra Wilkerson. “Kenneth is dedicated to Henderson and the community and insisted that the casting call start right here in Henderson prior to reaching out to larger areas of the country.”

Local businesses also have the chance to get their name up in lights, as it were, by becoming a film sponsor. Sponsorship levels range from the Bronze level – $500 – all the way up to Iridium – $20,000.

Celebrate Christmas Bluegrass-Style At Sunday Concert At Clearview Church

Join Jimmy and the Sound Barriers this Sunday at Clearview Church for a special holiday performance, Bluegrass style.

“Christmas Time’s A-Comin’” will begin at 6 p.m. at Clearview Church, 3485 Hwy .158 Business in Henderson.

The event is free and open to the public. A love offering will be taken to benefit Anchor of Hope, a women’s ministry whose mission is to provide for those in need with gifts of gas cards, food and blankets.

“Their mission is to make Christ visible to all, and to let them know they are not alone in the storms of life,” Barrier stated. The group donates blankets to children and to the sick as a reminder that they are being covered with the grace and love of God.

TownTalk: Clearview Church Plans BASS Legacy Night

An upcoming event at Clearview Church has some interesting similarities to some New Testament accounts of Jesus and his disciples being fishers of men. Or should that be fishermen?

Dr. Abidan Shah invites the community to come to Clearview on April 29 at 6 p.m. for BASS Legacy Night to hear a group of professional anglers talk about fishing, as well as offer testimonies.

Curtis Vick, a lay leader at Clearview, also is a co-angler, which is a step shy of being a professional. Vick said on TownTalk Thursday that he hopes others will find ways to strengthen – or establish – their faith as a result of the program.

It begins at 5:30 p.m. with a meal, and the discussion with eight or so other big names in Major League Fishing circles is from 6 p.m. to about 8 p.m.

“We’re using fishing as a platform for the Gospel,” said Ryan Hill, another Clearview member.

Registration is appreciated, but not required.

Organizers hope to see 250 people or more attend.

Vick, who was born and raised in Henderson, said he began attending Clearview a few years ago and learned that men should be the spiritual leaders of the household. Since then, he’s taken on that leadership role – with his family and his co-workers.

“I try to lead by example,” he said, admitting that he falls short from time to time, as we all do.

He lives in Boydton, VA, but works in Henderson now, adding that he tries to be a role model for the young people who work with him.

Planning for this event has pushed him outside his comfort zone, but he is reassured by the support he’s gotten from the church staff, its congregation and from the fishing community.

Shah said he is excited about the upcoming event. “It’s going to be phenomenal,” he said. “It’s going back to the roots of the gospel – this is how it all began,” he said.

“We are catching people with the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

TownTalk: ‘Clearview Today’ Show Airs On WIZS M-F At 10 A.M.

One of the team members at Clearview Church describes pastor Dr. Abidan Shah as a scholar with a pastor’s heart. That’s a winning combination, to be sure. And the Henderson church has launched a new show called Clearview Today to share his insights and message to others.

John Galantis and Ryan Hill are two members of the Clearview team who help produce the programs that emanate from Clearview, and they spoke with John C. Rose on Thursday’s TownTalk to shed a little light on the origins of the new show, which can be found Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. right here on WIZS.

Both said they were excited about the new platform, which also gives listeners a chance to interact with Shah each week.

There’s a dedicated phone line – 252.582.5028 – for listeners to make comments or to ask questions. The Friday show answers those questions from listeners, Hill said. “We (will) read and respond as best we can,” he added.

One of the biggest things that drives the Gospel, Galantis said, is God’s call to his people to take the Gospel into the world. “It’s very important that the conversation doesn’t die,” he said.

Hill said the show is another way to take the Gospel into the world. “We build a partnership with the people who are listening,” he said.

Shah and the half dozen or so team members at the church regularly sit down over lunch to discuss important topics, but the team routinely left with valuable life lessons. The podcasts arose from such meetings, and then, Galantis explained, they took it a step further:

What would happen if, instead of five or six people benefitting from Shah’s talks, “it were radically elevated to hundreds of people?”

From there the group created a daily show, related to the Bible, but also relevant to current situations and today’s issues.

The Clearview Today show’s signature line is “engages the mind and heart for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

There are deep truths to be found in the Bible, and Galantis said Shah’s insights are powerful.

“But you don’t need a PhD. to grasp some of these truths,” he said. Shah translates those deep truths that a layperson can understand, all the while enjoying the learning that is taking place.

Both men attribute having a strong collaborative team that engages and strategizes to achieve the common goal of bringing the Word to others.

“We trace God’s hand through all of that,” Hill said.

Galantis agreed. “Sometimes it’s difficult to see God’s hand when it’s happening,” he said. Most of life is looking back and coming to God. When he looks back at where the church was one year, five years, 10 years ago – “that’s how I’ve seen how God has worked.”

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

TownTalk: Domestic Violence Awareness Event This Weekend

The statistics are staggering: Every minute in the United States, 20 people are being physically abused by an intimate partner.

In the past year, Vance County’s Emergency 911 received 1,107 calls related to a domestic disturbances or disputes, according to Debbie K. Scott, domestic violence coordinator and gang resource specialist for the Vance County Sheriff’s Office.

Of those calls, 336 were assaults, 70 involved a weapon and unfortunately one of those calls involved the death of a male victim.

These cold, hard facts are just part of the story of domestic violence awareness, and Scott said the sheriff’s office is teaming up with Clearview Church for the 4th annual event to shed light on a subject that for too long has remained in the shadows of society.

The “Think Community” event will begin at 3 p.m. at Clearview Church, located at 3485 Hwy 158 Business in Henderson.

This year’s theme is “Break the Silence – Stop the Violence” and Scott told John C. Rose on Tuesday’s TownTalk that there will be several guest speakers and performers on hand, including pastor Roy Burroughs and the Work In Progress Gospel Choir, Sgt. Myron Alexander with the Vance County Sheriff’s Office and Keisha Valentine, a survivor of domestic violence.

“We’re looking forward to having a great program,” Scott said.

Whether you are a victim of domestic violence or you suspect someone else may be, it’s important to speak up and speak out, Scott said.

Valentine’s son witnessed her attack – she was shot multiple times at point-blank range – and it was her son who phoned 911 to report the incident.

“He was strong enough to speak up and make that call,” Scott recounted. Victims of abuse must not give up, she said. “You have to speak up – you can’t be quiet. You have to stand up against it…(and) try to get help.”

Victims can speak to other family members, a co-worker, a best friend – anyone who can provide support.

Valentine will share her story at Saturday’s event, and Scott said she hopes that others find strength as a result of hearing it.

“Come and break the silence,” she said. “We can put a dent in (domestic violence) and we can confront it.”

Domestic violence may begin with something as simple as hurtful words or disrespect, Scott explained. Saying hurtful things and intimidation tactics can escalate to emotional and physical abuse.

The weekend event is a way for the community to show its support, Scott said. “It’s a way to stand with the victims, support the surviviors, (and) help us continue to educate and confront this issue” as well as learning from hearing victims’ stories of survival and grieve collectively for those who have lost their lives to domestic violence.

Scott said support from local organizations helps to promote awareness about domestic violence. Last year, the Henderson Woman’s Club won a regional award for the work it did to donate bags of items to victims of domestic violence.

Participating in meaningful ways shows others that domestic violence “is not invited in our community – it’s unwanted and we will not be quiet any more.”
