The Local Skinny! Brick Power Team Lifts The Spirit Through Weights

The Brick is sponsoring the Henderson Open Championships later this summer, and winners qualify to participate in the World Championships, scheduled for mid-November in Virginia Beach.

The Brick is a weight-lifting ministry affiliated with – and located beside – Freedom Life Church of God on Martin Creek Road. Part of the group’s ministry, according to Harry Orr, is to put on fundraisers like the Henderson Open Championships, which takes place on Sept. 8 and 9.

“We’ve got a good weightlifting team out there,” Orr said of the Brick on Tuesday’s segment of The Local Skinny!

Orr said his group is hosting the meet for 100% RAW Powerlifting Federation, and classes of events include bench press and curls. Register before Aug. 31 online at https://rawpowerlifting.com/.

Orr, who turns 70 next month, is a hall of famer in the weightlifting world. He said he enjoys seeing others get involved in the sport as well.

“I just love to see people get in it…and have fun with it,” he said. In a world where there are so many bad things people can get tangled up in, it’s good to see people get involved in something positive like powerlifting. “It’s something good for them to do,” he said.

Freedom Life’s pastor, Jeff Prewer, is among the ministry’s biggest supporters, Orr said, having them come before the congregation after big wins.
“We want to serve the Lord the best we can,” Orr said. “People have other methods of doing it – we do it through weightlifting.”

The Brick is located at 1001 Martin Creek Rd.

Weigh-ins are Friday, Sept. 8 between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. and again on Saturday, Sept. 9 from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. Lifting begins at 9 a.m.

Weightlifters must present an acceptable form of photo ID – driver’s license, state ID, school ID and passport are acceptable. Work ID badges and recreational/social club ID cards are not acceptable. All participants must show proof of membership in the 100% Raw Powerlifting Federation as well; annual memberships are $40.

Entry fees for the Henderson Open Championships are $65 for bench press, deadlift and strict curl; $75 for push/pull division and $35 for crossover. These fees should be paid, along with completed registration, no later than Saturday, Aug. 31.

TownTalk: Brick Power Team Event Benefits Local Church

Think you’ve got what it takes to compete at The Brick?

If you have to ask what The Brick is, you may want to be a spectator rather than a competitor – The Brick is where The Brick Power Team gets its name and it is the site of an upcoming bench press contest.

Harry Orr, a member of the weightlifting team, said the Oct. 15 event will benefit Freedom Life Church of God, located right next door to The Brick on Martin Creek Road in Henderson.

“We’re trying to give a little bit back to our church for helping us and supporting us through these events,” he said. “We’re like a ministry outreach from the church – we’ll find somebody with some kind of need” and then host a fundraiser bench press event.

“Every little bit helps,” he said. “Sometimes, it’s a lot we can give…we enjoy doing it – and use weightlifting to make it happen.”

A recent recipient was the local American Legion, he said. Adult competitors pay $40 to register and teens pay $30, but Orr said they’re not sticklers on strict rules and regulations – Orr said he’s grateful to sponsors for their help in defraying the cost of things like food and trophies for the first- and second-place finishers in the various categories.

Competitors can weigh in between 8:30 and 11 on the morning of the competition, which should begin around noon. Previous events have pulled competitors from Wake Forest, Raleigh, Greensboro, Greenville and Roxboro, and Orr said he hopes that folks will turn out in October to participate or to cheer the competitors on.

“We go by weight classes and age,” Orr said, in determining the different categories for the competition. There are classes for teens, and men’s and women’s master classes, as well as open classes determined by weight.

There’s been a 75-year-old winner and a 10-year-old winner, he said. The youngster weighed about 100 pounds and he benched more than 100 pounds.  “We’ve got some real tough competitors in this sport,” he added.

For Orr, it’s a time to do what he enjoys doing – he’s been lifting for more than 30 years, he said. “It’s a great event to put on – we have a good time doing it.”

And the competitors probably get a little charge out of flexing their muscle in front of  others. “Everybody likes to show off a little bit,” Orr said.

Orr may fit that description as well, when he’s in a competition. But he was a bit more subdued as he shared an accolade that will be bestowed on him and some others from Vance County in just a couple of weeks at Aycock Rec Center: Orr will be inducted into the N.C. Power Lift Hall of Fame on Saturday, Sept. 10.

In 2011, Orr was ranked #1 in the 55-59 class of the American Challenge. It’s a lot of hard work on his part to train and practice, but he gives the credit to God.

“God’s been good to us, giving us the ability to do it,” he said.

Brick Power Team to Hold Bench Press Contest for Adults, Teens

Brick Power Team will hold a Bench Press Contest at Strong Ox Cross Fit Gym, 108 Critcher Rd. in Oxford, on Saturday, September 21, 2019.

Adult entry fee for the contest is $40, $30 for teens. General public – $5 (children under 12 free).

Weigh-Ins will be held from 8:30 until 11 a.m. with the meet to begin at 12:30 p.m. Trophies will be given for first and second place.

Brick Power Team Supports ‘Rae Rae’ Owen, Local Child Battling Leukemia

Henderson City Councilwoman Sara Coffey helped organize a bench press contest at the YMCA, which was held this past weekend to benefit Raegan “Rae Rae” Owen and family.  Rae Rae is a 10-year-old young lady in our community, and she was recently diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and is receiving treatment at this time. Her parents are Randy and Debbie Owen.

Coffey told WIZS News:

“We had a good turnout. We’re very thankful and appreciative of everyone. Tyler Pegram was our overall winner with 460 lbs. We had about 60 people from four different churches that came out in support of the cause. We raised around $900, not including gift certificates that still will be given from different restaurants. I presented [to] Randy for Rae Rae an autographed poster from Brooke Mills Simpson and two of Rae Rae’s family’s favorite photographs of her on canvas. It was a very emotional time for all of us, especially Randy, as I made the presentation.”

“We continue to thank our Brick Power Team for all their dedication and hard work.”

“My team will continue to support this family by attending other fundraisers as active participants. Rae Rae will start her 4th round of treatments this week. She is the strongest child I’ve ever known and continues to bless and encourage others by her  strength and strong will.”

Randy Owen told WIZS News that this next round of chemo is expected to last around 30 days.

This Friday, February 22, 2019, the City of Henderson Fire Department will have a Chicken Plate Fundraiser from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. at Central Fire Station, located at 211 Dabney Drive.

The Fire Department Facebook page states, and Fire Chief Steve Cordell has also said, “This fundraiser is to benefit Raegan Owen and family; Raegan is the daughter of Randy and Debbie Owen. This will be held at Henderson Fire Department Station #1 – 211 Dabney Drive, Henderson. Please see a firefighter about buying tickets or stop by the Henderson Fire Dept.”

Vance, Franklin, Granville and Warren County Fire and Rescue Departments are supporting this cause. “One Family-One Fight. Rise Above For Rae Rae.”
