Local SECU Branches Collecting School Supplies Through August

Teachers and students are gearing up for the start of a new school year, and that surely means school supply lists. Sometimes, those lists are long.

So if you’ve got children still in school and will be doing your back-to-school shopping soon, consider adding a couple of extras to your cart for donation to a drive sponsored by area State Employees’ Credit Unions.

Collection boxes are located at SECU branches in Henderson, Louisburg, Warrenton, Oxford and Butner, just waiting to receive your donation, according to Anna Lemert, a vice president at the Henderson SECU.

All items collected will be given to the school district where the branch is located, Lemert said.

Don’t have a child in school? No problem! Your donations will be gratefully accepted and appreciated.

Childcare for Back to School

Community partners in the form of the local YMCA and Chamber of Commerce seek to help with childcare for back to school.

The note below emailed out to Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce members from Michele Burgess contains a survey you can fill out as requested by Paul Ross and the Y for back to school childcare.

Community Resources Are Needed For Parents

Our local schools have made recent announcements of how they will operate for the first 9 weeks as they continue to deal with the coronavirus pandemic. We anticipate that some of your employees and staff members with school aged children will be looking for alternative child care on the days their children are not physically in school and also for after-school care. The Chamber has already been receiving questions from local HR Managers about available resources they can share with their employees. Paul Ross, CEO and President of the Henderson Family YMCA, has asked the Chamber to send this important survey out to our membership to gauge local needs/interest. Please share this survey link below with your employees so that the YMCA leadership can begin to make plans to meet our community needs.

Neighbors,

We hope this email finds you well. Below is a link to a survey for parents of school age children. This short survey consist of 9 questions asking what services you may need as we partner with schools and parents for the 20/21 school year. The Henderson Family YMCA is here to serve our community and we are excited to hear from you so we can better understand your needs. At the Y we want to build an effective program which benefits schools, students and parents during these ever changing times. We will use the survey data to finalize the YMCA Back to School Academy and provide program details soon.

State Highway Patrol Promotes Back To School Safety

RALEIGH – In anticipation of the upcoming school year, the State Highway Patrol is focusing on safety in and around school zones.  Motorists should be aware of an increase in school traffic and familiarize themselves with local school bus stop locations.  Teen drivers will also increase as some will be driving to and from school for the first time.  Drivers should also expect an increase in pedestrian traffic in and around school zones.

“Ensuring the safety of students as they travel to and from school is a responsibility shared by everyone”, said Col. Glenn McNeill Jr., commander of the State Highway Patrol.  “Our mission is to educate the motoring public on safe driving behaviors before, during and after school.”

Troopers statewide will monitor school bus routes, attempting to ensure motorists comply with stopping for school buses as they pick up and release students.

According to state law, motorists are required to stop when a school bus is displaying its mechanical stop signal or flashing red lights and the bus is stopped for the purpose of receiving or discharging passengers.  The driver of any other vehicle that approaches the school bus from any direction on the same street, highway, or public vehicular area shall bring that other vehicle to a full stop and shall remain stopped.

Officials also encourage students to ensure all traffic has stopped before entering the roadway when boarding or exiting their respective school bus.

In an attempt to increase safety and awareness, SHP is using social media to highlight a “Back to School” PSA, which can be viewed by vising the Patrol’s Facebook page.  A digital copy of the PSA is available upon request.
