H-V Rec. & Parks to Offer New ‘Body Blast’ Fitness Program

Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks introduces “Body Blast,” its newest fitness class offered at the Aycock Recreation Center.

This 45-minute high-energy, high-impact group circuit training class will focus on all the problem areas and is guaranteed to get you into shape. The class instructor is Victor Hunt.

Classes are offered from 7:15 until 8 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday from January 7 – March 26, 2020. The fee is $1 for members, $2 for non-members.

The Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department is offering a full schedule of activities for the young and the young-at-heart this winter season. Many of the events are offered at the Aycock Recreation Center, located at 307 Carey Chapel Road in Henderson.

Upcoming activities include:

Arthritis Exercise Class is a FREE low-impact, joint safe program developed for people with arthritis. This class has been proven to decrease pain and stiffness while increasing flexibility and range of motion. This class is also suitable for every fitness level. Senior Prep Games is designed for participants ages 50 or better who are planning to participate in the 2020 Senior Games. 2020 Basketball Opening Ceremony Extra Extra!!!! Come out, snap pictures, get autographs or just enjoy and show support for the 2020 Basketball Opening Ceremony for the Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department. This event will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2020, at 10 a.m. at the Aycock Recreation Center. The 2020 Polar Plunge will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2020, at the Satterwhite Point Glasshouse. Check-in begins at 9:30 a.m. and participants will jump at 10:30 a.m. The Polar Plunge is for courageous people to jump in Kerr Lake to support Special Olympics Vance County. This has been a successful event that has raised several thousand dollars for Special Olympics participants in this area. If you do not want to jump in, you can dip your toes in the water. Adult Basketball League Get your team together for the 2020 Adult Winter Basketball Season. This league is designed for adults ages 30 and up. There is a $420 Entry Fee per team (8 players per team). Registration begins on Monday, December 16, 2019, and ends on Sunday, January 19, 2020, at Aycock Recreation Center (307 Carey Chapel Rd.). The Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department is looking for “mature” adults ages 50 or better to participate in badminton and pickleball.

Badminton will be offered on Mondays from 10 – 11 a.m. beginning November 4, 2019, at the Aycock Recreation Center. Sessions will conclude on December 9.

Pickleball will be offered on Thursdays from 10 – 11 a.m. beginning November 7, 2019, at the Aycock Recreation Center. Sessions will conclude on December 12.

Pickleball is a paddleball sport that combines the elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis.

The cost to participate is $1.

Aycock Rec. Center to Hold Winter Swim Lessons for All Ages

The Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department announces its 2019 winter swim lesson schedule. Lessons will be held at the Aycock Recreation Center’s swimming pool each Saturday from November 2 – December 14, 2019. Lessons will not be held on Saturday, Nov. 30.

Parent-Tot Swim Lessons (6 months – 3 years old) 10 – 10:30 a.m.

Preschool Swim Lessons (3 – 5 years old) 10:30 – 11 a.m.

Beginner Swim Lessons (5 – 13 years old) 11 – 11:30 a.m.

Intermediate Swim Lessons (5 – 13 years old) 11:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Adult Swim Lessons (14 years old and older) 12 – 12:30 p.m.

Forms and a fee of $30 are due, along with completed registration form, by Friday, November 1, 2019. The class instructor will be Tanya Edwards.

Aycock Rec. Center’s Annual Fall Festival to Offer Family Fun

Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department’s 2019 Fall Festival for families will kick-off the fall season with traditional games, hayrides, bounce house, music, festival snacks, a haunted trail and the “famous haunted house.”

This event will be held at Aycock Recreation Center, 307 Carey Chapel Rd. in Henderson, on Thursday, October 17, 2019, from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. Come and join the community for a night of family fun.

Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks will offer fall swim lessons at the Aycock Recreation Center for ages 3 – adults on six consecutive Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays beginning the week of September 10.

The fee for the series of lessons is $30.

Aycock Rec. Center to Offer Thurs. Evening Beginning Yoga Classes

Beginning Yoga classes will be held in the Aycock Recreation Center’s Multipurpose Room on Thursday evenings from 6:15 to  7 p.m. Classes begin Thursday, September 5 and end Thursday, November 21, 2019. Class will not be held Thursday, October 17.

These sessions are based on basic Yoga techniques that inspire physical, mental and spiritual peace from within through balance, stretching and breathing.

Please bring your own Yoga mat.

The fee is $1 for members and $2 for non-members. Class instructor is Beryle Lewis.

Aycock Rec Center

Aycock Rec. Center to Reopen Next Week, Dedication Ceremony to Follow

Aycock Recreation Center will reopen on Tuesday, September 3, with the gym scheduled to reopen on Saturday, September 7, 2019.

The Rec. Center has been closed, with the exception of the outdoor track, since July 26 for upgrades including replacement of the gym floor.

A dedication ceremony for the upgraded facility will be held on Thursday, September 12 at 12 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
