The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce is proud to host another season of “Meet Me in the Street,” a series of concerts offered free to the local community.
The first concert for the year will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2019, and will feature The Castaways. A reputable band known throughout the South, The Castaways posses over fifty years of experience in the beach music industry. From it’s beginning in Durham, NC in 1961, The Castaways have been pleasing audiences with their unique flavor of Beach, Soul, and Rock N’ Roll for generations of fans.
With eight members on stage, The Castaways bring a full sound that includes live horns, versatile vocals covering a variety of music and high energy. Don’t be surprised if you hear some current Country, Top-40, or a little Southern-Rock as well!
The second and final concert for 2019 is set for Thursday, June 13 and will host “The Konnection Band.” This band is a local favorite and is one of the East Coast’s premiere party bands, specializing in a variety of music including Top 40, Rock, Country, R & B, Beach and Oldies.

Vance Co. High School to Operate on Early Start Calendar for 2019-2020

With the Vance County Board of Education’s earlier approval of a restart plan for Vance County High School, the school will operate on an early start calendar for the 2019-2020 school year.
VCHS will follow the same calendar as Early College High for the upcoming school year with classes beginning in early August.
School system officials are seeking input now from parents, students and employees on the proposed calendar for both schools, which has Monday, August 5, as the first day of classes. The proposed calendar also stipulates that first semester exams will occur prior to the Christmas break. The last day of classes in the proposed calendar is Thursday, May 21.
The Board of Education is expected to review and approve the proposed calendar, as well as calendars for all traditional schools and E.M. Rollins Elementary, at its March 11 meeting.
Gospel Music Group The McKameys to Perform at McGregor Hall

The McKameys will be performing at the McGregor Hall Performing Arts Center in downtown Henderson on Friday, March 22, 2019, at 7 p.m.
The McKameys have been singing the gospel for almost four decades at the Grand Ole Opry (Nashville, TN), and although the composition of the group has undergone some change, the motive has remained the same…to honor Him who is worthy of all praise. The group began with Peg, Carol and another sister, Dora. Later, Ruben joined the group and a little later he joined the family by marrying Peg. In 1971, both Carol and Dora left the group to fulfill family obligations and they were replaced by Peg and Ruben’s two daughters, Connie and Sheryl.

In September of 1984, the group had its first number one release “Who Put The Tears In The Eyes Of The Lamb” and shortly thereafter Sheryl decided to leave the group to fulfill her obligations as a mother and pastor’s wife. It was at this time that Peg’s sister, Carol Woodard, again joined the group. The vocalists have not changed since that time. Connie’s husband and son, Roger and Eli Fortner play the guitars for the group. The group also uses digital tracks to enhance the value of their performance.
The McKameys have enjoyed tremendous success from the beginning but most of the national recognition has occurred within the last decade. The group has been honored with many nominations and awards including 14 number one songs and almost every single released has charted in the Singing News Top 40 Chart. (The group has had 2 additional number one songs in the US Gospel News chart.)
In 1989, “God On The Mountain” was acclaimed Song of the Year by the Singing News Fan Awards. Peg McKamey Bean has been honored as the Favorite Female Vocalist by The Singing News Fan Awards for 7 years. The McKameys have won the hearts of Southern Gospel music lovers across the country.

Henderson Kiwanis Club to Hold Trout Dinner Fundraiser at 220 Seafood

The Henderson Kiwanis Club will hold a Trout Dinner Fundraiser for the “benefit of children,” on Monday, March 11, 2019, from 4 – 7 p.m. at the 220 Seafood Restaurant, 1812 Norlina Rd. in Henderson.
Trout, cole slaw, fries, and hushpuppies will be available for $7 per plate. “Eat in or take out.” Beverage provided with eat in meals only.

Henderson Junior Firefighter Program Open to First 30 Participants

The City of Henderson Fire Department, the Vance County Fire Department and the Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department will be offering a FREE Junior Firefighter program for ages 11-15. This program is designed to enhance career awareness, personal development and the understanding of fire safety.
This program is open to the first 30 participants. Participants must register at Aycock Recreation Center (307 Carey Chapel Rd. in Henderson) by Friday, March 15, 2019.

Restorative Justice Practices Coming to Granville County Public Schools
Restorative practices is a social science that studies how to improve and repair relationships between people and communities. The purpose is to build healthy communities, increase social capital, decrease crime and antisocial behavior, repair harm and restore relationships.
Restorative justice gives victims the chance to meet or communicate with their offender to explain the real impact of the crime – it empowers victims by giving them a voice. It also holds offenders to account for what they have done and helps them to take responsibility and make amends.
Granville County Public Schools is ready to embark upon this new initiative this summer by partnering with Crisis and Trauma Resource Institute Inc. CTRI will conduct two 3-day workshops on Restorative Justice Facilitator Training, for a group of up to 30 participants per session.
At the end of the two 3-day sessions, Granville County Schools will have 60 Restorative Justice trained Facilitators. The workshop will be held in Oxford, NC, on mutually agreed upon dates in June 2019. The 60 facilitators will then work on a plan of getting all of our employees trained. That will mean that our teachers, administrators, bus drivers, TAs, Child Nutrition, custodians, etc. will be trained.
Workshop Description Restorative Justice Facilitator Training
Restorative justice is a response to harmful incidents that seeks the direct inclusion of all involved. The goal is to meaningfully address the harm and foster renewed relationships. Drawing on the work of Canada’s original restorative justice pioneers and best practices around the globe, this training will deliver the essential skills of convening harm-focused dialogue processes within community, organizational and educational settings.
This is a highly interactive workshop where participants will practice and gain confidence in facilitating a model of dialogue that is participant-driven, culturally sensitive and empowering for all involved.

Franklin Co. Sheriff’s Office Arrests Man on Felony Rape of Child

On February 18, 2019, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Unit issued a warrant for the arrest of Miron Hosea Cameron, a Durham County resident.
Miron Hosea Cameron charges consisted of the following: one (1) count Felony Rape of a Child, one (1) count Felony Sexual Offense with a Child, and one (1) count Felony Indecent Liberties with a Child.
On February 21, 2019, with the assistance of Durham County Sheriff’s Office, Miron Hosea Cameron was arrested on the above charges.

/by Kelly BondurantHenderson Fire Chief Steve Cordell was on Thursday’s edition of WIZS Town Talk program to discuss tomorrow’s chicken plate fundraiser for Raegan “Rae Rae” Owen, a local 10-year-old girl battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
The fundraiser will be held this Friday, February 22, 2019, at Henderson Fire Station #1, 211 Dabney Drive, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Plates are available for $8 and tickets may be purchased from a member of the fire department prior to the event or the day of.
The event is sponsored by the Vance, Franklin, Granville and Warren County Fire and Rescue Departments with all proceeds benefiting Rae Rae and her family. T-shirts supporting Rae Rae’s battle with cancer will also be available for purchase.
Rae Rae’s father Randy Owen is a 32-year volunteer member of the fire department and the Fire & Rescue Coordinator at Vance-Granville Community College.
“When we see one of our own struggling with sickness like Rae Rae is battling, it really pulls on our heartstrings,” Cordell said. “We are one family, one fight.”
According to Cordell, the fire department has already sold approximately 1,200 tickets and anticipates serving a total of 2,500 plates.
“Come on out and eat with us on Friday. It’s hard to beat a chicken plate from a fire department. If it’s cooked by a fireman, it’s going to be a good meal.”
