The Local Skinny! Downtown Live on Young – Amanda Ellis

Young Street in downtown Henderson will be transformed in a couple of weeks for a few hours of al fresco dining, all for a good cause.
“Downtown Live on Young” will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11 and Amanda Walker Ellis, chairperson of the Henderson-Vance Downtown Development Commission board said this fundraiser is all about Henderson – from the chef right down to the entertainment.

In planning for the annual event, which is the nonprofit’s major fundraiser, organizers looked “local.”

“We just wanted it to be all about Henderson, bringing Henderson back,” Ellis told John C. Rose on The Local Skinny! “This is a perfect way to show that we can and we will” succeed and thrive as a vibrant community, she added.

Instead of one long banquet-style table with a fancy flair, this year’s event will be set up a bit differently, Ellis said. There will be 10 tables that will each accommodate 10 people. Frankie Nobles BBQ N More is providing food for the event, which includes appetizers, garden salad, baked potato and made-from-scratch corn muffins, topped off with two entrees slow-smoked brisket and marinated grilled salmon. In addition to water, tea and lemonade, beer and wine will be served as well.

Ellis said all planning considered COVID-19 safety measures. For instance, each table will have its own appetizers and food will be buffet-style, but there will be designated food servers to fill plates.

On one end of the street, local musician Jimmy Barrier and friends will provide musical entertainment.

This year’s fundraiser is a little scaled back, she said, and she expressed appreciation of the various community sponsors who are providing financial support.

Tickets are $75 each – seating is limited to 100 people. Contact the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce or any member of the HVDDC to get your tickets today!

The HVDDC is a nonprofit dedicated to downtown revitalization. It uses the money it raises for events and beautification projects like the one on the corner of Orange and Winder streets. Whether working to preserve buildings or address structural issues before they become bigger problems, HVDDC strives to avoid demolition and prevent neglect of buildings.

“All of that takes money,” Ellis said.

The Local Skinny! Lock Your Car

Lock your car. Push the button. Use the lever. Click the remote. Whatever it takes, remember to lock your car.

Whether it should be called a rash is up for interpretation, but at least one prowler and thief continues to strike in Vance County at night. And this thief and any existing similar thieves are taking things from unlocked cars.

Local law enforcement is well aware, but you need to report any property crimes that you encounter as soon as possible. It is another chance to gather evidence, show a pattern and find the suspect or suspects.

Without being privileged to many details, some enforcement action has already taken place here locally.

The suspect or suspects continue to be brazen however, pulling up in a vehicle, getting out, and stealing from unlocked cars. Video surveillance is available now more than ever as homeowners and property owners have cameras around, recording and uploading the video and audio to cloud storage 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Lock your car. Secure your belongings. What’s being taken so far is what’s easily accessible and is found in an unlocked car. It’s a pain easily avoided if your car is locked.

In one Vance County location several years ago, a thief took change and loose items from unlocked vehicles, leaving behind cell phones, purses and electronics.

In another instance, a thief broke out a small rear window to gain entry to a front seat storage of loose change. The thief re-locked the vehicle after exiting, leaving behind several more valuable items.

There have been times when it was kids and teenagers committing the crimes, and the process was a game of sorts, or even just straight up theft of money to then go make less than straight up purchases. Drugs. Or even just drinks and gasoline from the store.

But the recent spree, which spans several Northern Vance County areas among others, involves obvious adults arriving and departing the crime scenes in a vehicle. And who truly knows exactly what was taken other than the victims?

Trespassing and other larger dangers and consequences could arise as well. It’s not safe.

Fortunately so far in this latest outbreak of thefts, that click or push of the lock mechanism on your continues to be a great deterrent.

Sheriff Curtis Brame

Vance Sheriff Brame’s Advice To Avoid Phone Scams: “Don’t Do What I Did”

When the phone rings, the first reaction many of us have is to anwer the call. These days, however, unless a name pops up on the screen that you recognize, perhaps the best thing to do is – let it ring. You just may avoid getting caught up in a scam.

Vance County Sheriff Curtis Brame wishes he had followed the advice that he so often dispensed to others about that very thing; it may have saved him the inconvenience of contacting his bank and associated credit cards.

Brame told John C. Rose in an email Wednesday about getting a call from someone who claimed to be with Duke Energy. The caller said Brame’s electricity would be cut off, “due to delinquency and not paying my bill on time.”

At the time, the sheriff was in a hospital waiting room, and was in a vulnerable state because his wife had just undergone back surgery. “I was worried, concerned, not thinking straight,” Brame wrote in the email to WIZS News. He was waiting to go in and see his wife in recovery, and what he did next is what he tells others all the time NOT to do: He furnished information to that person on the other end of the phone.

The last thing he needed, after being at the hospital with his wife, was to return home to no electricity, he said.

When he was able to get to a computer and access his account online, he realized his mistake. Of course, “I had already paid my bills on time and had a zero balance with Duke Energy,” Brame said.

The worry and concern for his wife in the hospital shifted to Brame being “furious, upset and disturbed” for being a victim of a phone scam.

Now came the hassle of contacting his bank, put it on alert and cancel his cards.

“Please, please, please, don’t do what I did,” Brame said. “They are out there, regardless of who you are.”

Use of Monoclonal Antibody Therapy for COVID-19 Up 18-Fold in NC

— North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Press Release

As COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations surge across North Carolina, the use of monoclonal antibodies for treatment of COVID-19 increased by 18-fold since late June from 100 administrations for the week of June 23 to 1,874 for the week of Aug. 11. Statewide, there are more than 130 sites offering monoclonal antibodies to treat COVID-19 as this treatment can decrease the likelihood of hospitalization related to COVID-19.

Monoclonal antibody therapy is not a substitute for vaccination against COVID-19. However, it can reduce the severity of COVID-19 symptoms and decrease the likelihood of hospitalization, especially in high-risk patients. If you test positive for COVID-19, monoclonal antibody therapy must be administered within 10 days of your first COVID-19 symptoms, so it is crucial to get tested early.

Anyone who has symptoms of or been exposed to COVID-19 should get tested as soon as possible. Testing is widely available across the state. To find a testing site in your community, go to ncdhhs.gov/GetTested. People who are not experiencing serious symptoms should not go to the emergency department for routine COVID-19 testing. People should seek medical attention immediately for serious symptoms such as trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion or inability to arouse, or bluish lips or face.

Vaccines are the best protection from COVID-19 related hospitalization and death, as well as complications from the virus and the vast majority of people in the hospital or dying with COVID-19 are unvaccinated. Research has shown even people who had a mild case of COVID-19 may struggle with long-term effects like shortness of breath, chest pain and brain fog.

Talk to your health care provider to see if monoclonal antibody therapy is an option, find a treatment center near you or call the Federal Monoclonal Antibody Call Center for assistance at 1-877-332-6585 (English) or 1-877-366-0310 (Spanish). Some people may qualify for preventative treatment before showing symptoms. More information, including answers to frequently asked questions, are available on NCDHHS’ COVID-19 website.

The federal government is providing monoclonal antibody therapy at no cost to patients. However, health care providers may charge an administration fee for treatment. Medicare and many commercial insurance companies are covering all costs for patients. Check with your health plan to learn more about treatment costs.

Monoclonal antibodies are proteins made in a laboratory to fight infections, in this case, the virus that causes COVID-19, and are given to patients directly with an IV infusion or a shot. Some early evidence suggests this treatment can reduce the amount of the virus, or viral load, that causes COVID-19 in a person’s body. Having a lower viral load may reduce the severity of symptoms and decrease the likelihood of hospitalization.

The Food and Drug Administration has issued an Emergency Use Authorization to allow the use of monoclonal antibody therapies for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 in certain high-risk patients. Additionally, the FDA authorized this treatment for use in some patients who are exposed to COVID-19 even if they do not have symptoms. People who are not fully vaccinated or who have immunocompromising conditions, including those taking immunosuppressive medications, and have either been exposed to COVID-19 or are at high risk of exposure due to where they live or work may qualify for preventative treatment.

Vaccination is the best protection against serious illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. All unvaccinated North Carolinians age 12 and older should get a COVID-19 vaccine now to protect themselves, their community and those who cannot be vaccinated. Rigorous clinical trials among thousands of people ages 12 and older have proven vaccines are safe and effective. Almost 200 million Americans have been safely vaccinated.

In addition to getting vaccinated, to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect our communities, NCDHHS recommends that everyone wear a mask in indoor public spaces if you live in area of high or substantial levels of transmission as defined by the CDC until more people are vaccinated and viral transmission decreases. In North Carolina, that is now all 100 counties.

Free COVID-19 vaccines are widely available across the state to anyone 12 and older. To get a vaccine near you, visit MySpot.nc.gov or call 888-675-4567. You can also text your zip code to 438829 to find vaccine locations near you.
