The Local Skinny! Hundley Details Warren Co. Farmer’s Market Opening

The Warren County Farmers Market kicks off its 2022 season on Saturday, April 30. Vendors will be set up at the Warren County Health Department from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and market manager Danylu Hundley invites shoppers to show up and shop local, rain or shine.

“Everything is truly local,” Hundley told John C. Rose on Thursday’s segment of The Local Skinny! Locally grown strawberries are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what is available at the Warren County farmers market.

In addition to seasonal vegetables, the market offers local beef, pork and chicken, as well as a variety of indoor and outdoor plants, from vegetable starts to Japanese maple trees.

Hundley said she anticipates the number of vendors will grow as the season continues. Many vendors are back this year, and there are several new ones, including Mom’s Creative Décor and More. This vendor joined for the Christmas season last year and brings her handcrafted home décor items this year as a regular vendor.

The local garden club will be on hand, selling plants to support various beautification projects in the county and recyclable tote bags will be given away on Saturday. The tote bags were purchased with microgrant money provided by Duke Energy Foundation through a partnership with Working Landscapes.

Some vendors are accepting debit and credit cards this year, Hundley noted, but cash is still king at the farmers market.

Shoppers also will find locally sourced shiitake mushrooms and baked goods like pound cakes and breakfast cookies when they visit the market.

And grits made from heritage Jimmy Red corn will be available for purchase as well.

Whether it’s a bag of heritage grits or a flat of vegetable plants, there’s something for every taste at the Warren County Farmers Market.

“We have lots planned and look forward to seeing a big turnout,” Hundley said.

The market sets up shop each week at the county health department, 544 W. Ridgeway St., Warrenton.

  • Use the NC Extension Garden Plant Toolbox to research plants before you purchase or plant them.
  • Read the label on all chemicals before you purchase them to make sure you have the right product for the job.
  • Avoid using insecticides on plants that are in bloom.
  • If you limed in the fall now would be a great time to take another soil sample to see if your ph has changed.
  • Inspect your shade and ornamental trees to see if they are fully leafed out and growing vigorously. That’s a good indicator of overall plant health.
  • Always do a walk around your lawn before mowing look for objects that can become projectiles and could damage your mower.
  • Don’t stress about lace bug damage to azaleas. They are very common and rarely have more than a cosmetic impact.

Free Pop-Up Medical Clinic Coming To Henderson May 14-15

Vance Charter School is going to be the site for an upcoming pop-up free medical clinic for residents in the Henderson and Vance County area.

The clinic is part of Remote Area Medical (RAM), an organization whose mission is to provide quality medical care by health professionals to those underserved and uninsured populations. The RAM chapter at Duke University has enlisted its members to organize and finalize plans for the weekend clinic.

Some of the procedures that will be done include general exams, women’s health exams, dental fillings, cleanings and extractions and eye exams – with eyeglasses made on site.

Doctors, nurses, dentists, optometrists and other health professionals will see patients on Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15, beginning at 5 a.m. each day.

Clinics have historically serviced between 200 and 2000 community members over a single weekend, according to Rishabh Jain, a Duke University senior who is one of the organizers for the local event.

Jain said RAM appreciates local collaborators Dr. Brian Mathis of Vance Charter School, Capt. Derrick Smith of the Henderson Salvation Army, and Dr. Lawrence Greenblatt of the Duke Department of Medicine to host a clinic to serve central North Carolina.

There will be extensive COVID-19 protections in place, including HEPA-filtered dental bays, hospital-grade disinfecting protocols and temperature screening and social distancing of waiting patients.

“Patients will never be asked any questions about insurance status—all are welcome,” SS said in an email to WIZS News. “We believe this will be a great initiative that brings diverse cohorts of the Henderson community together.”

Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce President Michele Burgess said business/professional sponsorship opportunities are available now.  “Your financial assistance is needed, and you will see a direct return on your investment to this special cause with marketing and promotional signage, social media ads, your business name on volunteer t-shirts, and in media news releases,” Burgess said in a statement to WIZS News.

The payments can be made to Vance Charter School, and funds will be used to help cover hotel rooms for four nights for more than 30 volunteers who come in early and stay late to set up the tents, medical equipment, tables/chairs, and clean to prepare for the two-day event.

“Our Chamber’s theme for 2022 is ‘A Year of Community’ and what better way to bring our community together to help provide needed medical care for our citizens,” Burgess said.

She said many local medical professionals will be assisting in the event, as well as other area non-profit groups.

Knights Lacrosse Win in Overtime One Day; Become Conference Champions the Next

The Vance Charter Knights Varsity Men’s Lacrosse team had another strong showing with 2 more wins added to their record. On April 21, the Knights traveled to Cary Christian, which proved to be exciting from beginning to end. Cary Christian took an early lead, but the Knights quickly made a comeback by half-time. The game was tied 8-8 at the end of the third quarter and went into overtime when it was 11-11 at the end of 4th quarter.

The defense held strong throughout the night, with Junior Lucas Satterwhite tallying 19 saves. Daniel Mangum, Ayden Callahan, Johnny Kilian and Davis Suther all provided strong support for their goalie on the defensive end. Jacob Seaman won 19 face-offs on the nights, though the one going into overtime would prove to be the most critical, getting the ball into the hands of the offense. The game-winning goal was scored by Gavyn Sandlin during over-time, with the Knights winning 12-11.

This game, though non-conference, will go down in history for Vance Charter, as two of the Vance Charter Knights scored their 100th point on the season. Ryan Parker and Gavyn Sandlin, both reached the 100th point in a single season milestone during this game.

Scoring for the night was Sophomore Gavyn Sandlin (5G, 1A), Senior Ryan Parker (2G, 3A), Junior Christian Bean (2G), Senior Wyatt Yount (1G, 1A), Junior Jahlaine Scottland (1G) and Junior Sam Frazier (1G). The team had much to celebrate as they prepared for the final conference game on April 22 against Voyager.

The Knights hosted their final conference game of the season on April 22 at home. The Knights kicked off the evening honoring their seven seniors: Wyatt Yount, Davis Suther, Nathan Care, Jacob Seaman, Ryan Parker, Ayden Callahan and Hyson Ferguson.

The Knights controlled the game from the opening whistle, outscoring their opponents 16-1. Jacob Seaman dominated the face-offs, winning 15 of the 18. This put the offense in control of the game for much of the evening. Scoring for the night was Sophomore Gavyn Sandlin (4G, 6A), Senior Ryan Parker (6G, 2A), Senior Wyatt Yount (3G), Junior Sam Frazier (1G, 3A), Senior Davis Suther (1G), Senior Ayden Callahan (1G) and Junior Christian Bean (1A).

This victory kept the Knights undefeated in conference play, crowing them the Northern Lakes Conference Champions for the first time in the history of the program. The conference is made up of Voyager Academy, JF Webb High School, Roxboro Community and Vance Charter.

The Knights will look to keep their winning streak alive with their final regular season game on Wednesday, April 28 against Seaforth High School.

Oxford FD Receives Higher ISO Rating

The city of Oxford has announced that its fire department has received a new rating following a recent inspection, which places it among the top 12 percent of all rated fire departments in the state.

The Oxford Fire Department, under the leadership of Chief David Cottrell, achieved a new rating of 3 from the Insurance Services Office, according to information from the City of Oxford. The ISO rating will go into effect on Aug. 1, 2022.  The inspection, conducted by officials with the NC Department of Insurance of the State Fire Marshal, is required on a regular basis as part of the North Carolina Response Rating System (NCRRS).

The scores range from 1 (highest) to 10 (not recognized as a certified fire department by the state). A higher rating means that a department is better equipped to respond to fires and also significantly lower homeowners’ insurance rates in their district. Among other things, the inspections look for proper staffing levels, sufficient equipment, proper maintenance of equipment, communications capabilities, and availability of a water source.

In a statement, Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Mike Causey congratulated Cottrell and his department for their “performance and for the hard work of all the department members. The citizens in the city of these districts should rest easy knowing they have a fine group of firefighters protecting them and their property in case of an emergency.”

 

 

The Local Skinny! Granville Gardeners Expo

Stop by the Granville Gardeners Expo in Oxford on Saturday for a fun-filled day of plant and garden workshops, from beekeeping to composting. There will be more than 60 vendors on site at the Granville County Expo Center on Hwy. 15 south of Oxford, selling all types of plants and shrubs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Christi Henthorn is one of the the event organizers and she said this year’s event is more like a home and garden festival. And, she noted, it’s “a happy accident” that the expo will take place so close to Earth Day – which is tomorrow.

“We have a ton of stuff for everyone,” Henthorn told Bill Harris on Thursday’s The Local Skinny! segment. There is face painting, a petting zoo for the children, in addition to a wide variety of demonstrations and workshops scheduled throughout the day.

Local agriculture extension agent Johnny Coley will have a Gardening 101 class at 11 a.m. to dispel fears and encourage would-be gardeners to get a garden going. Whether they are vegetables, herbs or flowers, developing a green thumb is not that difficult, Henthorn said.

Coley will offer tips and tricks for the novice gardener, but even veteran gardeners are sure to pick up a thing or to, she said.

The parking lot in front of the expo center is reserved for those attendees who aren’t able to walk long distances and for those who are picking up pre-ordered plants. Henthorn said all others should park in the adjacent parking lot located in front of the former tobacco facility.

  • Provide cutworm protection around transplants by placing a cardboard collar around your transplant and tuck the collar down in the soil about 2 inches
  • Use good sanitation practices with garden tools and equipment to reduce risk of introducing weeds and transmitting diseases.
  • It should be safe now to put out your rain gauges
  • Doublecheck blade height on your mower.
  • Always wear PPE when mowing. Eye protection, sun protection, solid toe shoes
  • Use no more than about 3 inches of mulch around trees, shrubs and other plantings. Never place mulch against the trunk.
  • With the cost of fertilizer a good soil sample is really needed they are free of charge.
  • Repellant sprays can help with deer browsing on ornamental plantings, but will need to be reapplied periodically.
  • Check plants growing in planters each day for moisture they they can dry out quickly under warm conditions

Angela Allen Highlights Granville County Events

The events range from gardening to Scottish games, but families looking for some upcoming outdoor entertainment need look no further than Granville County for some fun and unique activities.

Granville Tourism Director Angela Allen joined John C. Rose and Bill Harris on Tuesday’s The Local Skinny! and reeled off a variety of activities teed up for the next couple of weeks.

Here are some highlights:

• Saturday, Apr. 23: 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. art and wine festival, downtown Oxford. The event is free and will feature artists demonstrating their art for onlookers to watch and learn about various media, from painting to jewelry making.

• Saturday, Apr. 23: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Granville Gardeners Expo, held at the Granville County Expo and Convention Center on Hwy. 15 south of Oxford. Shoppers can pick up herbs and other plants for sale, as well as participate in classes to learn about beekeeping, native plants and backyard composting, to name just a few. • Saturday, Apr. 30: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Granville County’s version of the Scottish Highland Games is coming to town. All proceeds from the event benefit the Central Children’s Home of North Carolina, which will be the site of the games. Dozens of athletes from across the country are coming to demonstrate a variety of classic Scottish games, thanks to organizer Buck Buchanan, owner of Lumpy’s Ice Cream in Wake Forest. He also happens to be an announcer for Scottish games and he wanted to do something to benefit the local children’s home, Allen said. Tickets are $20 for people $16 and older; younger attendees get in free. There will be bagpipe bands, Highland dancers and vendors specializing in Scottish food.
