On the Home and Garden Show with Vance Co. Cooperative Ext.

  • The Vance-Warren County Beekeepers Association will have their February meeting on Monday, February 10th at 7pm at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market.
  • The Granville-Vance-Warren Beginner Beekeepers School will have their next session on Saturday, February 15th at 9:00am at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market.
  • Check the temperatures of your cold frames or greenhouses if you use them. Especially if it’s 70 degrees fahrenheit.
  • Now is a good time to measure your lawn. This way you will know how much fertilizer to purchase.
  • It is not too early to start scouting lawns for cool-season weeds.
  • This time in February, you can still continue planting trees and shrubs.
  • Before purchasing Apple and Peach Trees, do your research. Some of the varieties that you may see in the seed catalogs, some of them may not grow well here in Piedmont North Carolina.

Cooperative Extension with Micah Sharpe: 4-H Events Happening in the Spring

On Vance County Cooperative Extension with Micah Sharpe:

The Dinah Gore 4-H Healthy Food Challenge is happening in March. Vance County will take on other teams from other counties in the State. This is a perfect opportunity for kids to showcase their culinary skills.

There will be a Game of Drones Competition in April! Kids have been working on their drones using block code.

Family STEM Night will happen on March 20th at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market from 6pm-8pm. It’s going to be an interactive hands-on evening full of STEM activities for the whole family.

Calling All Teachers! The 4-H Science Embryology Program sign-ups are now open. It’s an opportunity for your students to learn about the life-cycle of chicks. Spot are limited.

  • Now is a good time to take your gardening equipment out and see if they work. Especially since it is getting warmer. 
  • You need to start planting for your spring garden. When planting, think about the problems that you encountered in  your last planting season.
  • With February approaching, you need to get ready to prune your fruit trees.
  • This is a good time to purchase your seed starting mix. Avoid using garden soil, for best results.
  • Now is the time to clean your planting trays.
  • You still have to continue planting trees and shrubs.

  • You need to start planting for your spring garden. When planting, think about the problems that you encountered in your last planting season.
  • Now is an excellent time to plan your 2025 Garden out on paper. Include your Gardening Goals for this year.
  • January is inventory month. Do you have enough seeds, equipment, and supplies to prepare for the gardening season?
  • Be careful to store your garden chemicals in a place where it will not get frozen, especially with weather conditions like snow. The cold temperatures can alter the chemicals.
  • It’s still a good time to take inventory of your seeds. That way you will know what vegetable seeds to order, try ordering a new variety of seeds for the 2025 growing season.

  • Consider raising a garden in a raised bed if you think that you do not have much space.
