H-V Crime Stoppers August Crimes of the Month

Shooting Case:

On August 3, 2015 around 12:21 AM, officers with the Henderson Police Department responded to Highland Green Apartments, 111 S. Pinkston Street Henderson, NC in reference to shots being fired. While in route, officers were advised that there was a 9 year-old female that was transported by a personal vehicle to a local medical facility with injuries. The 9 year-old victim is currently being treated for her injuries. Officers on scene at Highland Green Apartments located a 19 year-old female, Aisha Taylor, of Henderson, who was suffering from a gunshot graze to her arm. Ms. Taylor later went to a local medical facility for treatment. The incident was reported to have occurred when a vehicle pulled up to a group of people that were standing in front of the apartments and began firing a firearm.

The incident is under further investigation by members of the Criminal Investigations Division. The Henderson Police Department encourages anyone with information related to this crime to contact the Henderson Police Department at 252-438-4141 or Crime Stoppers at 252-492-1925. Larceny Case

On July 27, 2015 at approximately 7:21 am, the Vance County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Sunset Gardens, 3174 US-158 Business, in reference to a larceny. Upon arrival Deputies talked to William Haithcock, who stated that someone during the night had taken a red Toro zero-turn mower from the shed. The Vance County Sheriff’s Office encourages any person with information related to this case to contact Henderson –Vance Crime Stoppers at 492-1925 and also you can put anonymous tips on the web site.  (www.hvcrimestoppers.com)  Citizens with information can also contact the Vance County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division at 738-2200.

New Animal Shelter Moving Forward

A “New” animal shelter for Vance County is moving forward, although at a snail’s pace.  Vance County Commissioners recently agreed to move forward on a new 8,000 square-foot building that is to cost between $1.1 and $1.6 million.  The shelter will be built on five acres of donated land.

After much discussion and with Commissioner Deborah Brown casting the only NO vote, the project is moving forward. Commissioners have agreed to take the next step and have approved further review of plans for the new shelter.new animal shelter site

In addition, the County is working with the U. S. Department of Agriculture to receive a 30-year loan of $1.7 million.  If approved, the County will make a $17,000 contribution as a part of the USDA deal.

The current shelter was built 40 years ago and is considered to be out-dated and, with only 2,000 sq. feet, is very small relative to the current needs of the community.

The Boyd family donated the five acres three years ago and includes a sunset provision that has the property reverting back to the Boyds if construction is not started within five years of the original gift.

So far about $22,000 has been raised by active supporters and animal lovers for the new shelter.  You can help by donating to the Vance County Animal Shelter. Send your tax deductible donation to the shelter at 165 Vance Academy Road, Henderson, NC 27537.

As the old saying goes, “We are closer than ever” to having a New Animal Shelter in Vance County.

Henderson-Vance Night Out Against Crime

The Henderson-Vance Night Out Against Crime is coming up on Tuesday, August 4th on Breckenridge Street in downtown Henderson between the Henderson Police Department and the Perry Memorial Library. The event starts at 5:00 p.m. and will wrap up at about 8:00 p.m.

As always, there will be free hot dogs, drinks, and t-shirts.

In a community that normally receives a fair amount of negative attention, the Henderson-Vance Night Out Against Crime is something that many area residents look forward to.

Henderson Optimist Club Respect for Law Banquet

On the night of Tuesday, July 28th the Henderson Optimist Club celebrated the accomplishments of local law enforcement and other public servants. Tommy Farmer, John Pecora, Britt Sams, and other Henderson Optimist Club members presented awards and spoke to members and recipients at the Respect for Law Banquet.

Brandon Logue was awarded Henderson Police Officer of the year, and was escorted by Chief Marcus Barrow. David Stanley was presented with the Henderson Firefighter of the year plaque, and was accompanied by Fire Chief Danny Wilkerson. Myron Alexander was credited with Vance County Deputy of year, and partnered with Sheriff Peter White for a short speech to the Optimist Club members. Joseph Thomas was awarded North Carolina State Highway Trooper of the Year, and was accompanied by 1st Sergeant Joseph Gaskins.

John O’Neal was awarded Vance County Firefighter of the year, and Charles Shelton was presented with a plaque for Kerr Lake Park Ranger of the year.

In many cases, these community servants do not get many “thank yous”. The next time you see one of these individuals or a representative of their respective organization take the time to thank them for what they do. They collectively make Vance County a better place to live, work, and have a little fun.

Embrace Event Draws Nearly 1,000

Saturday, April 18, 2015, the Embrace Henderson Family Spectacular event at SaddleRock Farm saw nearly 1,000 people in attendance.

 

850 kids and 125 volunteers, along with numerous area churches, joined forces for the event, which presents The Greatest Story Ever Told. One of the main organizers of the event, Kevin Kilgore, told WIZS News that in excess of 100 children have choosen to follow Christ in the event’s five year history.

Larry Johnson, who owns SaddleRock Farm, said it’s just so the whole community can come and have a free event. He said, “We are doing it because Jesus loves us, and we love others because of that.”

Longtime Vance County commissioner of 28 years and recent Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year for 2014, Danny Wright, was in attendance. And as he has each year, Mr. Wright had his trusty camera strapped around his neck. He said, “This is my community,” in reference to the Weldon’s Mill area as well as his home in nearby Cokesbury. He said, “This is primarily an evangalistic outreach effort to reach the children, and if you reach the children, then you reach their families. We are trying to change hearts, and when you change hearts you change cultures, and when you change cultures you change the community. So that’s what this is all about.”

 

Volunteer Phyllis Burnette said, “It’s wonderful to volunteer for this event, to see the children come out, to see the smiles on their faces, and to see so many churches out here working together, and to know that we have the opportunity to show Christ’s love.”

Harriett Baptist Church Pastor Wil Breedlove was in attendance, with his two children, and Breedlove said, “It’s a bunch of different churches in our community who love our community and want to make a diffence. It’s a great day; it’s a great family day. At seven o’clock this morning my kids got up and said, ‘Daddy, we are ready to go to the spectacular.'”

The morning prayer for the volunteers, just before the event started at 11:00am, brings it full circle for Kilgore and others. To the Glory of God only.

Vance County Animal Shelter

The shelter is full of dogs, cats and kittens in urgent need of adoption. Please call or visit the shelter if you are interested in fostering or adopting.

The Vance County Animal Shelter is in need bleach in order to disinfect and keep a disease free environment. If you are interested in donating the shelter is open Mondays 12:30-4:30, Tues-Thurs 10am-2pm and Saturdays 8am-12 noon.
