Vance Criminal Superior Trial Court

Henderson, NC – Criminal Superior Trial Court was held during the week of February 8, 2016, in Vance County. The following cases were disposed of by plea agreement:

Antonio Crudup plead to one count of Felony Possession of Marijuana, as a result of the September 10, 2014 service of a search warrant by officers of the Henderson Police Department. Crudup received a 5 to 15 month sentence which was suspended for 18 months of supervised probation.

Pauline Champion plead to Involuntary Manslaughter and Reckless Driving to Endanger arising out of an offense that occurred on October 7, 2014. Champion was sentenced to a 16 to 29 month sentence which was suspended for 48 months of supervised probation. She was also ordered to make restitution to the victims’ families. This case was investigated by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

James and Tonya Tunstall each plead to Possessing a Methamphetamine Precursor, Distributing a Methamphetamine Precursor and Misdemeanor Child Abuse. Both received two consecutive sentences of 15 to 27 months plus 150 days. Vance County Sheriffs deputies were assisting social workers with the Department of Social Services on October 24, 2014, when the violations were discovered.

Jim Robinson received an active sentence of 20 to 33 months plus 25 to 39 months consecutive, for his involvement in a robbery of the Payless Shoe Store on December 22, 2014. Robinson plead to Driving While Impaired, Common Law Robbery and Felony Flee to Elude Arrest. Officers with the Henderson Police Department were assisted by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the Vance County Sheriffs Office.

Marquel Epps plead to Misdemeanor Breaking and Entering and Larceny, and received 90 days suspended for one year of supervised probation. These charges arose from a March 9, 2015 incident investigated by the Vance County Sheriffs Office.

Cytrina Perry plead to Felonious Habitual Larceny, Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Hit and Run. Perry was sentenced to 10 to 21 months suspended for 24 months supervised probation. She must also make restitution to the victim. These charges resulted from an investigation by Henderson Police Department of a June 18, 2014 incident at Walmart.

Adrian Espino received 12 months of probation for his conviction of Resisting an Officer when he ran from officers with the Henderson Police Department on February 4, 2013.

William Mayfield plead to Possession of a Firearm by a Felon_ Mayfield received a 19 to 32 month sentence that was suspended with a split sentence to serve 180 days in NCDAC, after officers with the Henderson Police Department found Mayfield with a gun on October 26, 2014.

Zenobia Richardson received a 7 to 18 month sentence for larceny after removing anti-theft devices from clothing items on November 11, 2014. This case was investigated by officers with the Henderson Police Department.

Tasha Durham received 120 days suspended for 12 months supervised probation after she plead to Misdemeanor Possession of Stolen Goods. Officers with the Henderson Police Department investigated the January 1, 2015 incident.

Mark Crudup plead to Felony Flee to Elude Arrest and Possession of a Firearm by a felon after he was arrested by members of the Henderson Police Department for the October 16, 2014 incident. Crudup’s 17 to 30 month sentence was suspended for 24 months supervised probation. Crudup will have to spend 20 weekends in jail and will have a curfew.

West End Community Watch Meeting Recap

On Tuesday evening at the West End Baptist Church the West End Community Watch Group met at 6:30 p.m. to receive updates from Henderson Police Officers and to partake in a Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers presentation.

Henderson Police Officers addressed several issues in the West End Community such as speeding and litter along the roadways. If you have such issues in your community contact local law enforcement to make them aware of the situation.

The Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers then explained their mission statement, purpose, and gave details as to the latest payouts and crimes in the area.

The next local community watch meeting will be the Carey Chapel Community Watch. Carey Chapel Community Watch will hold it’s next meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, February 22nd at the Aycock Recreation Center. Brad Manring, a Vance County Forestry Ranger, will be the speaker. All members and area residents are encouraged to attend this meeting.

Early College Applications

Vance County Schools is now accepting applications for rising ninth graders to enroll in the Vance County Early College High School for the 2016-2017 school year.

Applications can be picked up from counselors at Eaton-Johnson Middle School, Henderson Middle School and the STEM Early High School, as well as on the Early College website and at the school’s office on the third floor of Building 2 on the campus of Vance-Granville Community College off Poplar Creek Road.

The deadline for receiving completed applications is March 3, 2016.

The first of the parent information meetings with parents of current eighth graders will be held Thursday, February 18, at Eaton-Johnson Middle School at 6 p.m. in the school’s media center. Additional, parent meetings are scheduled on February 24, at 6 p.m. at the STEM Early High School on the campus of Northern Vance High School, and on February 25 at 6 p.m. at Henderson Middle School.

Nominations open for Small Business of the Year

The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce is now seeking nominations for the 2015 Small Business of the Year. This award honors a local small business, which provides a critical product or service, fills a void in the business community or has a unique approach to the delivery of goods and services.

To be considered for this award, the nominee must be a member of the Henderson-Vance Chamber, have a maximum of 50 employees and be located in Vance County. The nominee cannot be a governmental agency or municipality. Chamber members are encouraged to nominate businesses they feel are deserving of this recognition.

For nomination forms and a complete list of criteria, please contact the Chamber office at 252-438-8414. Nomination forms should be completed and submitted to the Chamber office by Friday, April 8th.

The Henderson-Vance Chamber announces their continued growth in its membership, with Davis-Royster Funeral Service at 926 South Garnett Street in Henderson.  This new member represents a business that is actively contributing to the success and economic activity of this region.

Davis-Royster has not only joined the Chamber but expanded and will be having their Open House on Sunday, February 21, 2016.

They have joined many other business owners and managers working with the Chamber to move the economy forward and make Henderson and Vance County a better place to work, live and play.  We’re excited to have them join us, please join the Chamber in welcoming this new member.
