Carver Elementary Celebrates Opening of Multipurpose Room

A ribbon cutting was held on Friday, September 30th for Carver Elementary School as they celebrated their new multipurpose room was officially dedicated in memory of Eddie Wright, the late Vance County Board of Commissioners’ member who proved to be the school’s biggest advocate in getting the facility constructed.

All of the 225 students in the school were joined by the entire school staff, parents, friends and local officials in dedicating the new multipurpose room and participating in a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Marion Perry, a valuable and outstanding supporter of Carver Elementary, presented the plaque, which will hang in the new facility, commemorating the amazing contributions of Wright. She presented the plaque to Wright’s widow, Maresa, and their two daughters, Sabrina and Ashley.

In making the presentation, Perry talked about Wright’s devotion to Carver Elementary School and all public schools in Vance County. She said they often shared conversations about the importance of education and their mutual passion for helping children.

Principal David Westbrook told the audience that the handsome, wooden plaque, with a color photo of Wright, will be placed at the front entrance of the new multipurpose room.

Several local dignitaries were on hand to offer comments of praise for Wright and his steadfast support of the school and local children. Those who spoke included: Gloria J. White, chairwoman of the Vance County Board of Education: Gordon Wilder, chairman of the Vance County Board of Commissioners; Henderson Mayor Eddie Ellington; John Barnes, president of the Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce; and Dr. Anthony Jackson, superintendent of Vance County Schools.

Students and teachers from the school assisted with the ribbon-cutting, which was led by White. Mrs. Wright and her daughters also participated as did all of the local officials in attendance.

“This is a great day for our school,” Westbrook said. “We are so proud to have this wonderful facility for our students. We will always remember Mr. Wright for his amazing support in making this new facility possible.”

Hurricane Matthew Update For Henderson Area

Brian Short is the Director of Emergency Operations for Vance County.  When events such as the potential impacts of bad weather and other public safety issues arise, Short sends out information to local preparedness teams, public service agencies and to the media.

About 1:30 p.m. today, Tuesday, October 4, Short sent the following email and included WIZS News.  His email included two attachments:  NWS briefing and a list of recommended family preparedness items.  Please click the two links just above to view those items and read the body of his message below.

Short said, “Hurricane Matthew continues to slowly make its way towards the US coast. While the track has changed to some extent over the course of the past two days, the current path depicts a NC impact. Presently, this is believed to be predominantly a coastal event, however some of the effects will be felt as far inland as Vance County.

“At the moment our forecast calls for gusty winds and a heavy rains, however if the westward shift that we have seen throughout the day today continues our situation could get substantially worse.

“We began our formal preparation efforts today and will further escalate them over the coming days as the track becomes more defined. We have also begun to talk about implementing additional emergency protective measures but again we will make final decision on those over the course of the coming days.

“Please see the attached from the NWS regarding the latest information on Hurricane Matthew. Additionally, we have included a comprehensive list of family preparedness items that we recommend each person have on hand in the event of an impact. For the most part, these are items that people generally have in their homes anyway, but it is a good idea to locate them and to put them together ahead of time in case they are needed.

“We will continue to forward along additional information as it is received.”

New Vance County Animal Shelter Ribbon Cutting

The new Vance County Animal Shelter on Brodie Road in Henderson held an official ribbon cutting on Saturday, October 1 at 10:00 a.m. and an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Present were County Commissioners, City Council Members, Henderson Mayor Eddie Ellington and many interested citizens.

The animal control officers including Frankie Nobles, Chris Vick, Billy Spain, and William Coker greeted guests and guided vance-animal-shelter-kitty-1-100116them through the new facility. There are areas for feral cats, healthy cats, healthy dogs, and quarantined animals. There is a puppy visitation room and a separate cat visitation room. If you want to adopt a pet, you can take it into a visitation room to discover more about it’s personality before you take it home. You must apply for adoption before you take it home. Before the animal leaves it is spayed or neutered and has had its shots.

Besides cats and dogs, the shelter takes in a wide variety of other unwanted or homeless animals. Intake areas are separate and are near examining and bathing areas. Careful precautions have been taken to keep all areas of the shelter clean.
vance-animal-shelter-dog-1-100116The shelter continues to take donations of bleach and cat sand. Local volunteers are needed to help socialize and care for the animals.

The shelter is open to the public: Monday from noon until 4:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.; Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.; but closed on Friday.vance-animal-shelter-kitty-2-100116

Now homeless animals will be sheltered in clean, fresh surroundings with bright, new cages, food dishes, and bedding.

The consensus among those present is that this beautiful, new facility is something Vance County can really be proud of and that a lot of pride and thought was obviously put into this building.
