The custodial teams at L.B. Yancey Elementary School and Henderson Middle School have received awards for having the highest ratings for elementary and middle/high, respectively, in the most recent Vance County Schools inspections. Southern Vance National Technical Honor Society Coat Drive 2017

Oxford Prep School 2nd Annual Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament

Oxford Preparatory School will host their 2nd Annual Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament on December 27th, 28th, and 29th. This year it will be a middle school boy’s only event with 6 schools participating: Oxford Prep, Henderson Collegiate, Hawley MS, Warren County MS, Butner-Stem MS, and Northern Granville MS.

Admission is $8/day or $16 for all 3 days.

New Human Services club formed at VGCC

The newest club for students at Vance-Granville Community College focuses on the Human Services Technology (HST) field. The college offers three Human Services degrees – a General HST track, a Substance Abuse track, and a Gerontology track – although interested students in any major are welcome to join the new club.

The HST Club held its first organizational meeting in November at VGCC’s South Campus, the home of the HST program. VGCC Human Services instructor Sharon O’Geary conducted the meeting and said she hopes that the new venture will increase the program’s visibility on campus. “Human Services students are passionate about helping people,” O’Geary observed. “We hope that this club can participate in a variety of special service projects that relate to our field and hold fundraisers that help our community. At the same time, we may be able to represent VGCC, attend conferences and help students obtain jobs in this field through networking.”

Students at the meeting elected the first officers to lead the HST Club. They included President Pamela Campbell of Littleton, a Gerontology major; Vice President Melissa Jackson of Oxford, a Substance Abuse major; Secretary Caitlyn Rudd of Franklinton, a Gerontology major; Treasurer Sonya Barnes of Henderson, who is completing both the General and Gerontology tracks; and Student Government Association (SGA) representative Feliciana Hernandez of Henderson, a Substance Abuse major.

The HST curriculum program prepares students for entry-level positions in institutions and agencies which provide social, community, and educational services. VGCC’s program is nationally accredited by the Council for Standards in Human Service Education (CSHSE).

On Wednesday November 27, 2017 the Vance County Sheriff’s Office assisted with an operation with the United States Marshalls Service Fugitive Task Force in reference to a suspect named Dominique Brockenbrough that was wanted out of Richmond, Virginia for a double homicide. Marshalls received information that the target was at the location of 1011 Long Creek Court Kittrell, North Carolina staying with a male and a female. Arrest was made pursuant to a search of the residence. Dominique Brockenbrough was taken into custody and was extradited to Virginia.

Officers seized 53.9 grams of an unknown powdered substance, and 21.3 grams of cocaine.

New Start to Help in Vance Co. with Those Coming Out of Incarceration

Thursday morning at 11:30, WIZS TownTalk will conduct a live interview with Cedrick Swinson of New Start.  He is the Peer Support Leader.  He works with formerly incarcerated people and their families to execute plans for school, housing and the gathering of other resources to successfully re-enter society from prison.  He told WIZS News that the biggest barriers are employment and a place to live.

The focus of this initiative is to assist high crime, high poverty communities to address the full range of challenges involved in helping formerly incarcerated adults who have been involved in the adult justice system make successful transitions back to the community. The intent of this initiative is to protect community safety by ensuring that these individuals:

  1. Become productive, responsible and law-abiding members of society;
  2. Are provided with positive opportunities to engage in pro-social activities such as employment and/or education;
  3. Maintain long employment;
  4. Sustain a stable residence; and
  5. Successfully address their substance abuse issues and mental health needs, as applicable, through partnerships with local programs.

Eligibility Requirements

An adult is eligible to participate in a program funded through New Start program if that individual, on the date of enrollment:

  • Is 25 years of age or older;
  • Has never been convicted of a sex crime other than prostitution;
  • Was previously incarcerated and released within 180 days; or
  • Is currently under supervision (i.e. confined in a correctional facility with release date within 6 months, residing in a residential reentry center, on electronic monitoring or home-based monitoring, or enrolled in a jail-based work release center.

Discretion is granted to enroll individuals convicted of violent offenses or assessed as high risk.

Priority of service to veterans and spouses of certain veterans for the receipt of employment, training, and placement services in any job training program funded in whole or part by DOL.

Clearview Church “Stories in the Stars”
