Friendly Folks and Free Hot Dogs Await at 2018 ‘Night Out Against Crime’

A reminder that the Henderson/Vance Night Out Against Crime will be held this Tuesday, August 7, 2018, from 5 – 8 p.m. on Breckenridge Street in downtown Henderson.

Events for this year’s Night Out include displays of law enforcement, public safety vehicles and equipment and informational booths. Free hot dogs, drinks, souvenir cups and children’s activities, including face painting and bounce houses, will also be available.

In addition to the Henderson Police Department, the Vance County Sheriff’s Office, Henderson Fire Department, Vance County Fire Department, EMS personnel, NC State Highway Patrol, Crime Stoppers, Vance County Department of Social Services, and Infinite Possibilities, Inc. will also be among the organizations represented at the community event.

“Night Out is held for everyone to see what our community has to offer,” said Lieutenant Jessica West with the Henderson Police Department. “It’s about getting together, having fun and learning about law enforcement; get to know officers one-on-one.”

In case of heavy rain, Night Out will be rescheduled for the following Tuesday, August 14, 2018 – same time and location.

The 2018 National Farmers Market Week 2018 is August 5 – 11. This week would be a great opportunity to get out in the community, learn more about your local farmers and produce and go home with delicious goodies for the family. Shopping your Vance County Regional Farmers Market (VCRFM) offers many benefits for individuals and the community.

Farmers markets support local economies by eliminating the “middle man” and allowing more benefits to the farmer, preserving farmland and rural livelihood. Shopping at your VCRFM also allows you to engage with other community members and learn more about where your food is coming from and the farmers who are growing it.

Saving money is another benefit of farmers markets. Since the farmers are able to sell their products directly to the consumer, prices are often lower. The VCRFM also accepts EBT/SNAP transactions for fresh produce, thus increasing the availability of fresh food for low-income families.

The produce at the VCRFM comes from local farms, guaranteeing you receive the freshest in-season produce. In-season produce is higher in nutrients and often better tasting as it is picked at the peak of freshness.

Try choosing something unique each trip to the VCRFM. Get your children involved and try a new type of produce each week.

Get to know your farmers — strike up a conversation with vendors and learn more about them. For example: Where is their farm? Do they grow organic? What is their favorite way to prepare their produce?

Plan your meals around your trip — search for recipes that allow you to implement the different foods from your trip in a different way. Your VCRFM also has seasonal recipes available for you to try.

Enjoy the weather – rain or shine (we are an indoor facility), snatch up some delicious food and support your local farmers’ markets for National Farmers Market Week.

The ribbon cutting for the Salvation Army Thrift Store, 2108 Raleigh Road, Henderson, will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 10, 2018.

Badcock Furniture and More, in the Dabney Drive Shopping Center, Henderson, will hold their ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, August 29, 2018, at 11 a.m.

VGCC Offering Enrollment Day at Main Campus on Wed., Aug. 8

Vance-Granville Community College will hold “Enrollment Day” on Wednesday, August 8, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. at its Main Campus between Henderson and Oxford.

VGCC staff members will be available during those hours to provide information on the enrollment process, academic programs and student support services, including financial aid. Advisors and academic coaches will be available to help students register for Fall classes. In addition, refreshments will be available for visitors who attend Enrollment Day.

The regular Fall Semester begins Monday, August 13, and a 12-week semester starts on Tuesday, September 11.

“Vance-Granville Community College offers more than 40 curriculum programs to help students earn certificates, diplomas and degrees in preparation for careers or transfer to a university for a four-year degree,” said Jeff Allen, VGCC’s dean of enrollment and outreach. “Enrollment Day is the perfect time to get ready for the new semester. We invite students to bring their parents with them to get more details on the enrollment process.”

Students attending Enrollment Day at the Main Campus will be able to register to attend classes at any of the college’s four campuses. VGCC’s Main Campus is located on Poplar Creek Road in Vance County (about midway between Henderson and Oxford) at the intersection with Interstate 85 (Exit 209). Vance-Granville also has campuses in southern Granville County, Franklin County and Warren County.

STEM Early High School to Hold Orientation Sessions for 6th – 8th Graders

Orientation for sixth graders who will attend STEM Early High School for the 2018-2019 school year will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 2018.
Orientation for seventh and eighth graders at STEM Early High will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2018.
Sessions on both days will be held at the school on the campus of Vance County High School at 925 Garrett Road, Henderson. On each day, students are expected to attend from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A parent meeting will be held at 1 p.m. on both days.

Only a Few Days Remain to Register for Kids’ Construction Camp

Only a few days remain to register for the Rebuilding Hope, Inc. Kids’ Construction Camp being held August 6 – 8, 2018.

The camp will be held from 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. each day at the Rebuilding Hope warehouse at 414 Raleigh Road, Henderson. Space is limited to 30 participants in third through sixth grades.

Campers will be given hands-on experience with basic construction skills as they rotate through stations such as Hammer & Nails, Electrical & Plumbing, Block Laying and Take-home Building Project.

‘Operation Nor’easter’ Nets 13 Defendants

United States Attorney Robert J. Higdon, Jr. announced that “Operation Nor’easter,” a heroin and opioid centered Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) Operation headed up by the Federal Bureau of Investigation resulted in the indictment of twelve (12) defendants for outstanding federal charges in a coordinated warrant enforcement operation. In addition, several defendants related to this operation were found to be in the custody of the State of North Carolina. Federal detainers have been filed against those subjects.

This operation was conducted as part of the Eastern District’s Take Back North Carolina Initiative designed to focus federal resources on the alarming level of opioid use and the deaths associated with it. This initiative is bringing the full weight of the federal court system in the fight against crime in Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrell, and Gates Counties in partnership with District Attorneys’ Offices and federal, state, and local law enforcement.

The following individuals were charged by way of Criminal Indictment. The individual charges for each defendant are contained in the parenthesis following the personal information.

• Rasheen Jerome Arnold 24, of Edenton, NC (Felon in Possession of Firearm; Possession of Stolen Firearm)

• Alvin Johnson, 41, Pasquotank County, NC, (Possession with the intent to distribute cocaine and cocaine base) (crack)

• Samuel Rawlins, 39, Elizabeth City, NC, (Possession of Firearm by Felon)

• Devon Lee, 36, Perquimans County, NC, (Conspiracy to distribute cocaine and possession with the intent to distribute cocaine)

• Willie Person, 54, Grandy, NC, (Possession with the intent to distribute cocaine and cocaine base) (crack)

• Glenn Mitchell, 49, Edenton, NC, (Possession with the intent to distribute cocaine and heroin)

• Clarence Chestnutt, 40, Hertford, NC, (Possession with the intent to distribute cocaine)

• John James Taylor, 37, Elizabeth City, NC, (Possession with the intent to distribute a quantity of cocaine and heroin; possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime; possession of a firearm by felon)

• Nathan Lamonte Silver, 44, Elizabeth City, NC, (Hobbs Act robbery)

• Mykel Levant Davis, 37, Elizabeth City, NC, (Possession of firearm by felon)

• Marvin Johnson, 41, Elizabeth City, NC, (Possession with the intent to distribute heroin)

• Ross Domina Spruill, 33, Dare County, NC, (Possession with the intent to distribute cocaine and cocaine base) (crack)

The charges and allegations contained in the Indictments are merely accusations. The defendants are considered innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The cases are being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation along the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, & Explosives, (ATF), the United States Marshal Service, Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigations, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations, Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office, Chowan County Sheriff’s Office, Elizabeth City Police Department, Edenton Police Department, Perquimans County Sheriff’s Office, Camden County Sheriff’s Office, Currituck County Sheriff’s Office, Dare County Sheriff’s Office, Tyrell County Sheriff’s Office, Gates County Sheriff’s Office, Manteo Police Department, North Carolina First Judicial District Attorney’s Office, and the United States Probation Office.
