HPD: 18-Year-Old Shot, Killed in Apparent Drug Deal Gone Awry

On Wednesday, October 7, 2020, at approximately 8:43 p.m., officers of the Henderson Police Department were dispatched to the 600 block of E. Andrews Avenue to investigate gunfire. When they arrived, they located Alveante (Al) Markeith Holden (18), of Vance County, suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso.

Holden was found seated inside a vehicle he had been operating earlier, in the parking lot of “The Wash House,” a laundromat. Holden had succumbed to his injuries prior to the officers’ arrival.

Evidence was found in and around “The Wash House,” and several individuals were interviewed. Through information gathered, Holden is a victim of a narcotics transaction gone awry.

The suspect is a white male and is believed to be the sole shooter in the incident. He was accompanied by another white male and a white female.

HPD is seeking the assistance of the community and the people of the surrounding area to solve this case. We are currently looking for an extended cab, white, full-size truck with a high stance, possibly a lift kit. The make of the vehicle is not clear but is possibly a GMC or Chevrolet. The only additional descriptor we have is brush/limbs protruding from the cargo area.

We are pleading with the community for anyone with information about this case to contact us immediately. A cash reward of up to $2,000 is offered through Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers ((252) 492-1925 or P3 app).

No Bond for Henderson Man Arrested While on Pretrial Release

On October 6, 2020, the Vance County Sheriff‘s Office Criminal Investigation Division, Vance County Sheriff‘s Office Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Criminal Apprehension Team arrested John Williams Jr. (age 37) at 550 West Andrews Avenue Apt. 55 in Henderson.

Williams was arrested on two counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with the Intent to Kill from an incident in the County. Williams was also charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon from an incident that occurred in the city limits of Henderson. 

Williams received no bond because he was out on pretrial release for a 1st Degree Murder charge. Williams was placed in the Vance County Detention Center.

Williams‘ court date was set for October 19, 2020, in Vance County District Court.

This investigation is continuing.

‘Think Community’ at VCSO’s 2nd Annual Domestic Violence Awareness Event

The Vance County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with Dr. Abidan Shah, pastor of Clearview Church, will host the 2nd Annual Domestic Violence Awareness Event on Saturday, October 24, 2020. The event will begin at 3 p.m. at Clearview Church located at 3485 US Hwy 158, Henderson.

Activities will be held in the church parking lot for social distancing purposes. Face masks are required.

This year’s theme is “Think Community.” The keynote speaker will be Winston-Salem Chief of Police Catrina Thompson and the honorary guest will be Valerie L. Williams, founder and CEO of Lovesmart, Inc.

Music will be performed by the Clearview Praise Team with a special guest performance by Minister Roy Burroughs & Work In Progress.

Refreshments will be served courtesy of Clearview Church.

Sponsors for the event are Clearview Church, the Optimist Club of Henderson and Betty B’s Florist.

Reminder: Regular Voter Registration Deadline is Friday, October 9

Eligible individuals who want to cast their ballot on Election Day 2020 have until Friday, October 9 to register to vote.

To register, eligible individuals have the following options:

  • Complete a North Carolina Voter Registration Application and return it to their county board of elections office by 5 p.m. October 9. If an application is received after the deadline, it will be timely if it is postmarked on or before October 9. If the postmark is missing or unclear, the application will be processed if it is received in the mail no later than 20 days before the election. Otherwise, the application will not be processed until after the election. If submitted by fax or email, the application must be received by 5 p.m. October 9, and a hard copy of the document delivered to the county board by 20 days before the election.
  • Existing NC Division of Motor Vehicles’ customers may register to vote online.

“We encourage all eligible individuals to register to vote and make their voice heard in 2020,” said Karen Brinson Bell, executive director of the State Board of Elections. “It’s easy, and there’s still time, either through the regular process or at any one-stop early voting location in your county.”

Same-Day Registration Available During Early Voting Period

Individuals who miss Friday’s deadline may register and vote at the same time during the one-stop early voting period, October 15-31, at any early voting site in their county. County-by-county early voting sites and schedules are available at the State Board’s One-Stop Early Voting Site Search. (For early voting sites statewide, see this PDF.)

Except under rare circumstances, North Carolina residents may not register to vote on Election Day.

To register to vote, a person must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen;
  • Live in the county of his/her registration, and have lived there for at least 30 days before the date of the election;
  • Be at least 18 years old or will be by the date of the general election. 16 and 17-year-olds may preregister to vote; AND
  • Not be serving a sentence for a felony conviction, including probation, parole, or post-release supervision.*

*By order of the court, you may now register and vote if you are serving an extended term of probation, post-release supervision, or parole, you have outstanding fines, fees, or restitution, and you do not know of another reason that your probation, post-release supervision, or parole was extended.

Updating Your Registration

The voter registration application may be used to change any voting information, including name, address, and party affiliation. The change notification must be signed and should be sent to the voter’s county board of elections by October 9.

Updates to name, address, and party affiliation must be signed, but can be provided by fax or email to your county board of elections. A wet ink (physical) signature is not required for voter registration updates in the same county.

DMV customers may update their voter registration residential or mailing address and party affiliation through the DMV service. This service does not currently allow voters to change their name.

Registered voters also may update an existing registration at a one-stop early voting site during the early voting period.

Suspect in Shooting of Female While on Release for Homicide Located, Arrested

Today, the Vance County Sheriff’s Office located and arrested John Williams without incident on outstanding warrants from their office, along with outstanding warrants from the Henderson Police Department.

On Friday, September 25, 2020, officers of the Henderson Police Department responded to the 200 block of Chavasse Avenue after receiving a call of a person being shot. When they arrived, they located Tracey L. Person (51) suffering from a single gunshot wound to the upper torso.

Person was transported to an area medical facility for treatment of her injuries.

She and a male friend had been walking in the area when a dark-colored vehicle pulled alongside them and an occupant fired a weapon. As a result of HPD’s investigation, it is believed the male walking with Person was the intended target of the assault.

Through the assistance of the public, the shooter was identified as John Williams, age 37, of Vance County.

Williams was on pre-trial release for a homicide that occurred in Vance County.

Williams is now in the Vance County Jail without bond due to these charges and his previous pretrial release conditions.

City of Henderson Issues Statement on Halloween Activities

COVID-19 has changed or influenced how we define our “normal” for 2020. As we enter the fall season and quickly approach Halloween, we should remain vigilant with our efforts to reduce the threat of COVID-19 in our community. The event of Halloween is known to bring an abundance of people into close contact, and many traditional Halloween activities can be high-risk for spreading viruses.

Due to the pandemic, this year the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services “strongly recommends” against traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating in favor of lower risk activities. Residents of Henderson are advised to consider NCDHHS’s Halloween event guidance when determining whether to participate in Halloween celebrations (https://files.nc.gov/covid/documents/guidance/NCDHHS-Interim-Guidance-for-Halloween.pdf).

There are several safer, alternative ways to participate in Halloween. Please be on the lookout for lowered risk alternatives within our community.

Celebrating virtually or with members of your own household poses a low risk for spreading the virus, while in-person gatherings pose varying levels of risk. When participating in any activity, participants should consider the risk of virus spread based upon the activity’s size and the host’s use of mitigation strategies. Remember the three W’s, Wear, Wait, and Wash.

Per the CDC, a costume mask (such as for Halloween) is not a substitute for a cloth mask. A costume mask should not be used unless it is made of two or more layers of breathable fabric that covers the mouth and nose and doesn’t leave gaps around the face. Do not wear a costume mask over a protective cloth mask because it can be dangerous if the costume mask makes it hard to breathe. Instead, consider using a Halloween-themed cloth mask.

If you may have COVID-19 or you may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, you should not participate in in-person Halloween festivities and should not give out candy to trick-or-treaters.
