KVA Student selected for Senate Page Program in Virginia
Sarah Allen, an eighth grader at Kerr Vance Academy has been selected for the Senate Page Program for the Commonwealth of Virginia. The General Assembly will be in session during January and February. The Senate Page Leadership Program is structured similar to a college preparatory program with components centered on developing future leaders.
Students who receive admission to the program carry on the tradition of page service in the legislature while fulfilling requirements in a professional development track comprised of speakers, site visits and classroom-like instruction. The mission of the program is to facilitate a structured environment in which young Virginians embrace responsibility and accountability, develop professional characteristics through strict standards of conduct and engage in the legislative process through work, observation and discussion. Sarah is the daughter of Richard and Jill Allen of Clarksville, Virginia.
KVA Student selected for prestigious Rotary Leadership Conference
John Averette, a junior at Kerr Vance Academy was recently selected to attend the Rotary Club Youth Leadership Conference in April at Camp Oak Hill in Virginia. The conference will include experiential sessions on leadership, team building activities, and a rope course among other experiences. RCYL award winners are selected for demonstrating leadership potential in scholastic, athletic, and civic activities. John is a native of Henderson and the son of Curtis and Angie Averette.
Congressman Butterfield Honors the Life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman G. K. Butterfield (NC-01) released the following statement on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which is observed annually on the third Monday of January, in honor of Dr. King’s birthday on January 15, 1929:
“Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. moved generations of Americans to challenge inequality, while carrying the message of hope and optimism. As we honor the life of Dr. King, let us reflect on his vision of human rights, economic justice, and equality.
“In 1966, Dr. King memorably described inequality in health care as the ‘most shocking and inhumane’ form of injustice. Dr. King’s words are especially meaningful this year, as we face attacks to health care.
“Since its passage in 2010, the Affordable Care Act has moved us closer to fulfilling Dr. King’s dream of a more equal health care system. More than 30 million Americans have gained access to quality, affordable health insurance through the Marketplace. No one can be denied care due to a pre-existing condition. Women are no longer charged more for the same health care as men. Our hospitals, especially those in rural areas, receive the funds they need to offer quality care to patients and keep their doors open. And families that struggle to cover the cost of care now have better assistance.
“Until every American has access to affordable, quality care, there is work to be done to honor Dr. King’s vision of equality for all.”

NC Supreme Court Justice to speak at VGCC Martin Luther King Holiday Celebration
NC Supreme Court Justice to speak at VGCC Martin Luther King Holiday Celebration
Vance-Granville Community College will hold a special program celebrating the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at 11 a.m. in the Civic Center on VGCC’s Main Campus in Vance County. The celebration is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the VGCC Male Mentoring Success Initiative (MMSI) and the Student Government Association.
The guest speaker for the event will be the newest Associate Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, the Honorable Michael R. “Mike” Morgan. He was elected to the state’s highest court in November, after serving as an administrative law judge, a Wake County District Court judge and, most recently, a Superior Court judge. In addition, as a veteran faculty member of the National Judicial College located on the campus of the University of Nevada, Justice Morgan has taught and trained judges from all over the United States and its territories for the past 24 years.
A New Bern native, Justice Morgan is a graduate of Duke University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Sociology. He furthered his education at North Carolina Central University School of Law, distinguishing himself by serving as student body president in his final year of law school and earning his Juris Doctorate with Honors. Morgan later served as an adjunct professor for the NCCU School of Law.
The Jan. 18 program will also feature inspirational music presented by a choir of VGCC faculty, staff and students.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to a local charitable organization.
