DOA Secretary to Present Report on Women’s Health and Wellness at Vance-Granville Community College

Report Highlights:
- North Carolina ranks 11th highest in infant mortality and 9th highest in stroke mortality among women – and the problem is even worse in rural counties.
- North Carolina’s mortality rates for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and breast cancer, among other diseases, have decreased since the 2013 report.
- In North Carolina, more than one-third of women (35 percent) have experienced at least one type of intimate partner violence (IPV) and more than 35 percent of North Carolina women report having experienced some form of aggression or control by an intimate partner.
- There are wide disparities in North Carolina women’s disease mortality rates by race and ethnicity. The heart disease rate among Black women in North Carolina is more than three times higher than the rate of Hispanic women, the racial and ethnic group with the lowest rate. Black women also have a rate of breast cancer mortality that is more than three times higher than the rate for Hispanic women.

Dog Lost in I-85 Car Accident Safely Returned to Owner!

Tracey Tsoumbos reports that Titan, the dog lost in a car accident on I-85 on June 30 has been safely captured and returned to his owner.
Tsoumbos thanked team member Mary Paschall for her hard work on tracking and finding Titan.
According to social media postings, many in the community were concerned for Titan and did their part to assist with the search effort.

Town Talk: Friendly Barber Shop Celebrates 55th Anniversary – 07/16/19

In honor of Friendly Barber Shop’s 55th anniversary, owner and barber Gene Fisher was interviewed for Tuesday’s edition of WIZS’ Town Talk.
Located at 1003 Nicholas Street in Henderson, both the shop and Fisher have been offering haircuts to residents since 1964. According to Fisher, the shop was located in a building across the street for six years before moving to its current location in 1970.
“Out of the 55 years, I’ve been here every day except for deaths, vacation and sickness,” Fisher reported.

Fisher said he has worked with many barbers over the years including Lou Pearce, Randolph Edwards and Dave Loughlin.
“We even had a couple of young boys that got in trouble with the law and Lou gave them a chance,” said Fisher. “They came over here and did a very good job before moving on to other fields.”
Of course, another change over the years has been the price of services. Fisher said haircuts were $1.25 when the shop first opened and slowly increased to $16 today.
When Town Talk host John Charles Rose, who was getting a haircut while interviewing Fisher, joked that the price of the shop’s soft drinks hasn’t increased in over 25 years, Fisher said he wasn’t in it for the money.
“I don’t care anything about making money. I just want to keep customers happy. I don’t want them to leave my chair until their hair is right,” said Fisher.
Fisher said the best part of his job is the great conversations he has with customers, “I just like to talk to people and to see how they are doing, how their families are doing, what church they go to and things like that.”
Fisher, who takes pride in his work and pride in his community, was asked how he felt about recent shootings in Vance County and offered these suggestions:
“I think it’s terrible. They need to put prayer back in school; that is one thing that will really help this country. I think they need to reestablish a draft system for all boys coming out of high school and require at least two years of service to cut down on the drug problems.”
With a sanitation grade of 100, 55 years of haircutting experience, good conversational skills and a dose of wisdom, Fisher and Friendly Barber Shop continue to serve the community.

McGregor Hall Announces Audition Dates for ‘Shrek the Musical’

McGregor Hall Performing Arts Center announces audition dates for “Shrek the Musical” directed by Mark Hopper.
Choose to audition either Saturday, August 17 at 10 a.m. or Monday, August 19 at 7 p.m. Callback auditions will be held Wednesday, August 21 at 7 p.m.
Auditions will be held onstage at McGregor Hall. They will consist of a cold read and musical material that will be taught as part of the audition. You may choose to bring 16 – 32 bars of a prepared piece (not required).
Performances will be October 24 (two daytime school performances), October 25 & 26 at 8 p.m., October 27 at 2 p.m., November 1 & 2 at 8 p.m. and November 3 at 2 p.m.

Business Donations Needed for H-V Chamber’s New Teacher Bags

The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce is preparing to welcome new teachers to the Vance County area in August. The schools include all Vance County Public Schools, Henderson Collegiate, Crossroads Christian School, Kerr-Vance Academy and Vance Charter School.
We are looking for donations from local business owners to pack into bags (that have been generously donated by the Vance County Farm Bureau) for these teachers. We have approximately 165 new teachers that we will be welcoming to the area.
Businesses may donate everything from chips, chewing gum, pencils, pens, notepads, water bottles, stress balls, gift cards….anything that they feel would promote their business.
If your business would be able to donate an item for each teacher, we would greatly appreciate it. Donations are being accepted now until Tuesday, August 6, 2019.
