“Stars of the Grand Ole Opry” presented by Branson’s Ozark Jubilee will perform Saturday, October 13, 2018, at 8 p.m. at the McGregor Hall Performing Arts Center in downtown Henderson.

The all-star cast of the Jubilee will be performing the music of the great stars of the Grand Ole Opry. This year’s Jubilee features the Australian Sensation, “Jennifer Simmons.” The Jubilee also features Branson’s funniest comedian and world-class fiddler, Doofus Doolittle. If you like Country music and good, clean family entertainment, you’ll want to bring all your friends and come out to see the Ozark Jubilee!

The Sunrise Forum Committee of the Granville County Chamber of Commerce, the Granville County Human Relations Commission and the League of Women Voters of Granville County will sponsor a Candidate Forum on Tuesday, October 2, 2018,  in the Commissioners Board Room of Oxford City Hall. The event is slated for 6 p.m., with candidate presentations to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Participating candidates (on the local November ballot) will be allowed time for brief introductions before participating as a panel to answer prepared questions asked by a moderator. Light refreshments will be served.

Oxford City Hall is located at 300 Williamsboro Street. The public is invited to attend.

NOTICE TO PUBLIC AND PRESS

The Granville County Board of Education will meet for a BOE Work Session on Thursday, September 27, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. at the Granville County Public Central Office, 101 Delacroix Street, Oxford, North Carolina.

The purpose of the meeting will be to receive information and discuss long-term planning options to address school facility needs and capacity in light of declining enrollment. The board will also meet in a Closed Session for Personnel/Attorney-Client Privilege in accordance with N.C. General Statute 143.318.11 (a)(6), 143-318.11 (a)(3), 143.318.11 (a)(5) and Section 115C-321 on this evening.

The next scheduled board meeting will be held Monday, October 1, 2018, at 6 p.m.

Drug Activity Complaints Lead to Arrest of Franklin Co. Man

On September 19, 2018, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit and Community Action Team arrested Franklin County resident, Mark Thomas Kemmerzell, Jr. for multiple drug offenses.

This investigation was the result of citizen complaints alleging that Mark Thomas Kemmerzell, Jr. was involved in illegal drug activity throughout Franklin and surrounding counties. As a result of these complaints, Narcotics Detectives initiated an investigation and was able to validate the information provided.

During the investigation, multiple purchases of Controlled Substances were made from Mark Thomas Kemmerzell, Jr.

Sheriff Kent Winstead stated, “The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is committed to aggressively pursuing illegal drug activity and we will continue to make these investigations a priority. The citizens of our county continue to be proactive in providing information that is useful to our investigators and their tips are paying off.”

Mark Thomas Kemmerzell, Jr. is currently in the Franklin County Detention Center under a $100,000 secured bond.

17th Annual ‘Show, Shine, Shag & Dine’ Only One Month Away!

Vance County Tourism Development Director Pam Hester and Administrative Assistant Norman Dickerson were on Thursday’s edition of WIZS’ Town Talk program to discuss tourism news and upcoming events.

The next tourism-sponsored event will be the 17th Annual Show, Shine, Shag & Dine on Friday, October 19 and Saturday, October 20 in downtown Henderson. 1978 and older antique cars, classic cars, nostalgia drag cars, muscle cars, street rods, rat rods and trucks will cover a ten-block area of Garnett Street in Historic Downtown Henderson.

With only one month to go until the big event, the tourism department is busy preparing for the thousands of guests who will be visiting Henderson and Vance County.

This world-class car show is one of the largest tourism draws and economic boosts to Vance County each year. Local hotels, gas stations, restaurants, stores and places of entertainment all benefit from the dollars spent over the weekend.

2018 Show, Shine, Shag & Dine Schedule:

Friday, October 19

11 a.m. – 4 p.m. ~ Cruise-in and BBQ cookout for event guests. Meal served 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. $12 per plate cover charge at the door. Location: Satterwhite Point Park, Kerr Lake, I-85 – Exit 217.

Vance Co. Animal Services Recipient of $7K+ Spay/Neuter Grant

Vance County Animal Services is pleased to announce that they are a recipient of a $7,500 Spay/Neuter Grant from Community Partnership for Pets. This grant was received from the Margaret T. Pietrie Spay/Neuter Foundation out of Chapel Hill, NC.

This grant was applied for on September 16, 2018, and will be used for:

Pet spay/neuter services for citizens in the community that do not qualify for the state-funded spay/neuter program.

These funds will help citizens in our community get their personal pets spayed/neutered to reduce the number of unwanted animals being born in the community. This will also reduce the number of animal intakes at the Vance County Animal Shelter.

Red Cross: Blood, Platelet Donations Needed in Wake of Florence

As the American Red Cross responds to Hurricane Florence, providing food, shelter and comfort to those affected, blood and platelet donors are urged to give when it’s safe to travel to care for patients in the storm’s path and across the country. People can also help by making a financial donation to support relief efforts.

Hurricane’s impact on blood and platelet donations

Hurricane Florence’s wrath left catastrophic damage behind and also took a toll on blood and platelet donations. Nearly 200 Red Cross blood drives in the Southeast were forced to cancel, resulting in more than 5,200 uncollected blood and platelet donations. In North Carolina, 57 blood drives were called off due to the storm, causing nearly 2,100 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected.

“Natural disasters like hurricanes can disrupt blood drives and prevent donors from giving, but hospital patients still depend on lifesaving transfusions,” said Cliff Numark, senior vice president, Red Cross Blood Services. “There is an especially critical need for platelets to help cancer patients and type O blood donations for ongoing patient care and emergencies. Every donation can be a lifeline for patients.”

How to help

As conditions improve, donors of all blood types are urged to make an appointment to give blood or platelets and replenish the blood supply. Appointments can be made by using the Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS  (1-800-733-2767).

Financial donations are also needed and allow the Red Cross to provide disaster relief immediately. Help people affected by Hurricane Florence by visiting RedCross.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or texting the word FLORENCE to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

How to donate blood

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. Alonzo “Hamburger” Jones has become a people’s favorite all over the world. Comedian Hamburger is on a mission to let people know they are not living right. In doing so, Hamburger tries not to use profanity, like gentlemen of the old west who did not swear in front of the ladies. Instead, comedian Alonzo Jones has substituted profanity with one word…..HAMBURGER.

QUACK – QUACK!!!!!

Cecil “Shucky Ducky” Armstrong has appeared on “Def Comedy Jam.” He has also been the ringmaster of the UniverSoul Circus. He is known for the catchphrase “Shucky Ducky Quack Quack.” He describes his catchphrase as meaning disappointment or excitement.

The night’s emcee is Les Long. Tara “Sister Bigbone” Sharp and Darren Fleet join in on the fun.
