Fraud Alert from the Vance County Sheriff’s Office:
Please be aware that there is a telephone scam going on right now. A robotic voice claiming to be Agent Gayle Stone of the Social Security Administration states that your social security number has been frozen due to fraud. The voice gives a number to call back on. That number changes every day and is a cloned VOIP number that cannot be traced.
DO NOT CALL THE NUMBER BACK.
The person who answers the phone will ask for your social security number and other information to “verify” your identity. Once they have that, they will likely tell you to send them money (typically gift cards or Green Dot Cards) to clear up the matter. Then, after they have cashed in that money, they steal your identity and open credit accounts in your name.
Vance Co. Animal Services to Hold Free Rabies Clinic at Greater Zion Holiness

Vance County Animal Services will hold a free rabies vaccine clinic at Greater Zion Holiness Church on Saturday, June 29, 2019, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. The church is located at 804 Flint St., Henderson, NC.
Please have your dogs on a leash and all cats in carriers.
Being a Vance County resident is not required. Please feel free to stop by no matter where you live!
Cadets Graduate From Sheriff’s Office Teen Law Academy

Participants of the 2019 Granville County Sheriff’s Office Teen Law Academy have received certificates of completion after a week-long training program. Held at Granville Central High School, the session was offered – at no cost – to high school students interested in a career in law enforcement, the criminal justice system, the U.S. Military or public service.
Participating cadets engaged in classroom and hands-on law enforcement activities, exposing them to the rigors and demands facing today’s law enforcement officers.

The 2019 graduating class included 28 cadets: Adam Adcock, Shakya Ball, K’Veon Bruce, Malachi Cheek, Megan Ellis, Evelyn Galvan, Daniel Gladden, Jatavious Hunt, Riley Johnson, Christopher May, Ricky O’Neal, Dominic Pollay, Kara Ray, Clay Slaughter, Matthew Spiers, Joel Tidd, Josh Adcock, Blake Bowling, James Gladden, Sandra Inman, Jaden Lawrence, Griffin McCaffery, RocQuan Perry, Felix Pollay, Brittany Smith, Caleb Senter, Brandon Sullivan and Angel Webb.
“We are very proud of this training program,” Sheriff Brindell Wilkins said, “and are especially proud of our first graduating class. These young men and women showed that they have what it takes to be successful when they enter their chosen professions.”
Academy instructors included representatives of law enforcement, judges, attorneys, members of the U.S. Army National Guard and other highly-qualified career professionals who provided training in firearms and shooting skills, crime scene investigation, K9 drug detection, high-risk felony traffic stops, physical fitness, and other aspects of instruction.
Training also included information about the roles of SWAT and special response teams, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the criminal court system, and use of the Life Flight helicopter.

A graduation ceremony was held on Friday, June 21. Angel Webb served as Class Valedictorian, while Brandon Sullivan was recognized as Distinguished Leader. Other honors included Brittany Smith, Best All Around; Caleb Senter, Extra Effort Award (male); Megan Ellis, Extra Effort Award (female); and Clay Slaughter, Top Performance.
Scholarship winners, each of whom received a $300 cash award at program completion, included Christopher May, Griffin McCaffery and Kara Ray.
The Teen Law Academy Planning Committee included Randy Christensen, Elliott Carver, Christy Currin, Tabitha Glasscock, Jackie Harris, Sergent M. Manz, Shelby Sharron and Jerry Wells. Presenting sponsors, along with Granville County Sheriff Brindell Wilkins, Jr., included Granville County Public Schools, the U.S. Army National Guard and the Boy Scouts of America.
“This program was made possible by a number of local business and individuals who are too numerous to mention,” Sheriff Wilkins remarked. “Because of their support, we were able to offer this valuable training at no charge to the cadets who participated. I would like to personally thank everyone for their contributions and support.”

Louisburg’s New Recreational Park to Hold Grand Opening Celebration

A grand opening celebration of the V.E. and Lydia H. Owens Recreational Park at Louisburg’s Bull Creek will be held Saturday, July 13, 2019.
The park will start the day with a 5K Run/Walk from 8 until 10 a.m. Register at https://kcdctiming.weebly.com.
Food trucks, inflatables, games and music will provide fun for the whole family from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Don’t miss the dedication of the J.M. May Butterfly Garden at 11 a.m. and check out the V.E. Owens fishing hole.
The park is located at 499 Massenburg Baker Road in Louisburg, and features walking and nature trails, a children’s playground and an ADA fishing pier.

Dennis Jarvis, director of Henderson-Vance Economic Development Commission, and Turner Pride, county extension director with Vance Co. Cooperative Extension, were the guests of honor on Wednesday’s edition of WIZS’ Town Talk.
Jarvis and Pride discussed current news and events related to their respective organizations, including an upcoming H-V Chamber-sponsored Business After Hours. Scheduled for Thursday, June 27, 2019, Chamber members and their guests are invited to enjoy food catered by Next Door Bistro, door prizes and live entertainment by local group The Cabin Pickers, featuring Jimmy Barrier.
Hosted by Vance County Economic Development and NC Cooperative Extension, the event will be held from 5:30 until 7 p.m. at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market located at 210 Southpark Dr. in Henderson.

Public Meeting Set on Planned Dabney Drive Upgrades

A project aimed at improving mobility and reducing congestion on Dabney Drive between Coble Boulevard and U.S. 158 Business in Vance County will be the subject of a public meeting in Henderson on Thursday.
The N.C. Department of Transportation has developed two concepts that will be discussed at the meeting. The first would make Dabney Drive one-way eastbound and Corbitt Road one-way westbound, with an option for a roundabout at South Garnett Street. The second concept would upgrade Dabney Drive to a four-lane, median-divided roadway.
Additional information, including a map of the proposals, can be found on the NCDOT public meetings website.
Area residents who want to learn more about the project, ask questions and comment on the plans can attend the meeting from 4 – 7 p.m. at E.M. Rollins Elementary School, 1600 South Garnett Street in Henderson. The public may attend at any time as no formal presentation will be made. Comments will be considered as the project develops. It is scheduled to begin construction in 2022.
If someone is unable to attend the meeting, they can still offer comments via email, phone or at NCDOT’s public input portal by July 11. Those email and phone comments can be directed to Brett Lackey, NCDOT project manager, at bwlackey@ncdot.gov or 919-424-4535.
NCDOT will provide auxiliary aids and services under the Americans with Disabilities Act for disabled persons who wish to participate in this workshop. Town Talk: Hedrick Discusses Retirement, 21 Years With VCS – 06/25/19

Terri Hedrick, public information officer for Vance County Schools, was on Tuesday’s edition of WIZS’ Town Talk program to announce her upcoming retirement from the school system.
Hired by VCS in 1998, Hedrick will retire Monday, July 1, 2019, with 21-years of service.
A native of Wilson County and a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, Hedrick has called Vance County home for the past 40 years.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time living in Vance County and working here,” Hedrick said.
Prior to joining VCS, Hedrick served as marketing director for Maria Parham Hospital. Hedrick also spent 15 years at what was then known as The Henderson Daily Dispatch as a reporter and editor.
Hedrick has also represented VCS well on WIZS’ Vance County Schools news program that has most recently aired on Mondays. She is wished the very best and will be missed!

Vance Co. Announces Filing Period for Local Elections

Filing for the October 8, 2019, City of Henderson Election will start on Friday, July 5, 2019, at 12 p.m. and end on Friday, July 19, 2019, at 12 p.m. Offices that will be on the ballot: Mayor, 1st and 2nd Ward seats and 3rd and 4th Ward At-Large seats. The filing fee is $10.
Filing for Town of Kittrell and Town of Middleburg elections will also start Friday, July 5, 2019, at 12 p.m. and end on Friday, July 19, 2019, at 12 p.m. The election date for Kittrell and Middleburg is November 5, 2019.
Offices that will be on the ballot for Kittrell: Mayor and three town commissioners. Offices that will be on the ballot for Middleburg: Mayor and three town council members. The filing fee is $5.
