The Local Skinny! Events At Perry Memorial Library

Walk into Perry Memorial Library in the coming days and weeks and you just may find something more than reading material, thanks to a craft workshop that is taking place today afternoon.

Youth Services Librarian Melody Peters joined WIZS co-host Bill Harris on Tuesday segment of The Local Skinny! to let families know about some interesting upcoming programs at the library.

Kindness Rocks! Is a program that has just a few simple ingredients: Young people, paint and rocks, Peters said.

The young artists will paint a simple inspirational word or picture on the rock, then place it somewhere for it to be discovered by someone walking by.

The idea is “to leave messages around the community where you live,” she said. Participants will find spots inside and outside the library to place their “kindness rocks,” with the hope that it brightens the day for the person who finds it.

Next Tuesday, June 27, at 11 a.m., the Farm Bureau Room will become a concert venue as the band “Big Bang Boom!” takes the stage. The group plays kid-friendly music, Peters said, and invites all to come enjoy.

Later that day, beginning at 4:30 p.m., representatives from the local animal shelter are going to bring along some adoptable pets for children to interact with and maybe even read a story to, Peters said. Kids will get a chance to make toys for dogs out of old t-shirts.

And on Thursdays, don’t forget the Mother Goose story time and Lego Fun Club. The story time is at 11 a.m. and the Lego group kicks off at 4 p.m. Last week, there were 35 kids enjoying their time creating with the classic plastic bricks.

TownTalk: Bee Jubilee Coming Saturday

The 7th annual Bee Jubilee will be held Saturday, June 24 at the Granville County Expo Center. Whether you’re an experienced beekeeper or just like the taste of honey, the Bee Jubilee has something for everyone – from educational workshops and tasty treats to just plain ol’ fun.

Christi Henthorn is one of the event organizers and she said as the event has grown over the years, the Granville County Beekeepers group strives to focus on local vendors and artisans.

“Everything is homegrown, handmade bee and agriculture-related,” Henthorn told WIZS’s Bill Harris on Monday’s TownTalk.

“We have some really awesome vendors,” who will have all sorts of bee-themed inventory for sale. The Bee Jubilee will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be a food truck rodeo on site as well, so participants will be able to enjoy some food and beverages while they’re walking among the vendors.

This year, the event will feature a Honey Show, and Henthorn encourages anyone who uses honey or other bee products in cooking or baking to enter. She said there will be mead (a beverage made with honey), as well as beeswax entered in the honey show.

Anyone can enter the honey show, but Henthorn said entries should contain local honey.

There will be an auction inside the expo center to help raise funds to establish an endowed professorship in apiculture at N.C. State University.

There are more than 80 county beekeepers’ associations across the state and they’re all working in concert with the state beekeepers group to help raise more than $600,000 needed to make the professorship a reality.

“We are on that track to get that money over the next several years,” Henthorn said.

Auction items should be brought to the expo center no later than Friday evening; entries for the honey show should be delivered between 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

One lucky raffle ticket holder will win a year’s worth of local honey. The winner will be announced about 2:30 p.m. before the Bee Jubilee concludes.

Several workshops will be offered, including a beginner bee workshop at 9:30 a.m., followed by a workshop presented by a group of Master Gardeners about planting your landscapes with pollinators in mind.

Vance County Schools Named National Beta District

For the fifth year in a row, Vance County Schools has been named a National Beta District of Distinction from the National Beta organization for 2022-2023.

The award is given to districts that offer National Beta in all schools in their district and induct qualifying students in eligible grades 4-12. Vance County Schools  is one of only 42 districts to receive this award nationwide, according to information from Brielle Barrow, VCS communication coordinator.

All award recipients received a National Beta District of Distinction award to display at their district office. In addition, National Beta District of Distinction principals received a plaque to display at their school.

This national award is evidence of Vance County Schools’ commitment to academic excellence, leadership development and service involvement; it illustrates the district’s dedication to preparing students for college and career readiness. Students who participate in National Beta follow the motto “Let us lead by serving others.”

FSU Bronco Roundup Set For July 11 At Fox Pond Park

Planning & Inspections Dept. Launches New Process To Ease Building Permit Review

Franklin County has announced a new process for building plan reviews aimed at expediting plan approval.

With an eye on providing better customer service, the county’s Planning & Inspections Department has created an Expedited Residential Plan Review process to facilitate the building permit review process for residents for residential additions, renovations and accessory structures – like decks, pools, garages and sheds.

“This new process is aimed to facilitate the permitting process for those unfamiliar with building code requirements as well as assisting entities desiring an expedited permitting timeline,” said Planning & Inspections Director Scott Hammerbacher.

Interested applicants can schedule an appointment to meet with permitting staff but must have received zoning approval from the appropriate jurisdiction and applied for a septic re-check, if applicable, prior to the scheduled appointment. Appointments may be scheduled on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

Applicants should bring proposed building plans for the plans examiner to review and make modifications as necessary for building code compliance.

Power Of Attorney, Wills And Trusts Topic Of July 11 Meeting

VGCC’s Edmonds Elected To Chair Triangle NC IDEA Foundation

Vance-Granville Community College has announced Dr. Jerry Edmonds III, Vice President of Workforce and Community Engagement, is the newly elected chair for Triangle 501(c)(3) NC IDEA.

NC IDEA is a Durham-based, independent private foundation committed to equitably empowering North Carolinians to achieve their entrepreneurial potential. Through a powerful combination of competitive grants and programs and a network of strategic partners, the organization supports the state’s most ambitious entrepreneurs as they transform their communities. Edmonds served on the organization’s board for two years prior to his election as chair; he has also been part of its North  Carolina Black Entrepreneurship Council (NC BEC) since its formation in 2020.

“NC IDEA is fortunate to have a visionary board comprised of accomplished business leaders with the  bold ambition to empower North Carolinians to achieve their entrepreneurial potential,” said Thom Ruhe, president and CEO of NC IDEA. “Our directors are distinguished members of the state’s entrepreneurial ecosystem,” Ruhe stated.

Before entering the higher education field, Edmonds held a variety of executive leadership positions for major corporations and has received numerous awards in areas including training, recruitment, marketing and leadership. He brought those perspectives to his roles as dean of Workforce and Economic Development and Small Business Center Director at Halifax Community College before joining VGCC’s executive team in 2019.

In  2018, Edmonds launched Willow Creek Tennis Retreat, LLC and the Edmonds Tennis and Education  Foundation, dedicated to utilizing the game of tennis to provide academic and athletic opportunities for  under-resourced youth throughout rural North Carolina.

Edmonds is joined on the NC IDEA Board by three newly elected members and six returning board  members, including past VGCC President Dr. Stelfanie Williams.
