Granville Co. Chamber of Commerce Hosting 5th Annual Golf Tournament

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce is hosting its 5th Annual Golf Tournament Thursday, June 7, 2018, at Henderson Country Club, 300 Country Club Drive, Henderson. Registration will begin at 12 noon, with a 1 p.m. shotgun start for the 4-man Captain’s Choice tournament.

Corporate sponsorships of $450 offer a hole sponsorship and a 4-man team. Hole sponsors are $100, and individual players pay $100 to play. All players receive 18 holes of golf w/cart, dinner and concessions. Mulligans and tee busters will be $10 per player.

There will be contests for a 50/50 raffle, closest to the pin challenge, longest drive and hole-in-one shootout.  Prizes and participant goodie bags are being provided by local Chamber members. Volunteers are needed throughout the afternoon of June 7, beginning at 12 noon. Time slots are 12 noon – 2:30 p.m. and 2:30 – 5 p.m. Come enjoy the afternoon with golfers, Henderson Country Club staff and other volunteers for the Chamber’s fifth annual event.

15th ANNIVERSARY OF THE CHAMBER’S ALIVE AFTER FIVE OUTDOOR CONCERT SERIES

The fifteenth-anniversary celebration of the Chamber’s ALIVE AFTER FIVE series will kick off in downtown Oxford’s parking lot at Littlejohn and Gilliam Streets.  GARY LOWDER & SMOKIN’ HOT Band will be performers for the evening.

This band is “known as a Soul, R & B party band,” based out of North Myrtle Beach, SC.  Their musical repertoire coves decades of hits from your favorite artists and genres of music including soul, rhythm and blues, funk, reggae, jazz standards, country, 50’s, 60’s and Carolina Beach Music.

In addition to performing some of the most current hits that are topping the charts today, the group has had many successful chart-topping hits on local radio and internet stations across North and South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and Florida.  Garey Lowder & SMOKIN’ HOT are comprised of multi-talented musicians who have come together to produce incredible performances each and every time they take the stage.

The Carolina Beach Music Association awarded Gary Lowder & Smokin’ Hot with DC of the year in 2013 at the Alabama Theater for “Soul Therapy”.  In 2014, the group was nominated for Group of the Year. In 2015, Gary Lowder & Smokin’ Hot was nominated for thirteen Carolina Beach Music Awards, with J.K. Loftin, group guitarist being honored with Engineer of the Year.

Cardinal Innovations Healthcare

Suicide Prevention Training – Thurs. May 3

Granville County Public Schools will be hosting a QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Suicide Prevention training session in conjunction with Cardinal Innovations Healthcare on Thursday, May 3, 2018, from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford.

Every 15 to 20 minutes, a person in the United States dies by suicide. This evidence-based training is designed to teach anyone how to save a life through three steps:

Question a person about suicide

Persuade the person to get help

Refer the person to the appropriate resources

Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to appropriate help. QPR can be taught in 1-2 hours.

This training is free and recommended for educators, parents, and community members.

City of Oxford, Upcoming Public Works & Personnel Meetings

The Public Works Committee for the Oxford Board of Commissioners will meet on Monday, May 7, 2018, at 1 p.m. The meeting will be held in the 1st Floor Training Room City Hall, 300 Williamsboro Street. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the paint for the City of Oxford Water Tanks.

The Personnel Committee for the Oxford Board of Commissioners will meet on Monday, May 7, 2018, at 2 p.m. The meeting will be held in the 1st Floor Training Room City Hall, 300 Williamsboro Street.  The purpose of the meeting is to discuss Personnel Evaluations of the City Manager and City Clerk.

WIZS Celebrates 63 Years On the Air!

On this first day of May 63 years ago, what is now known as WIZS signed on to the airwaves in a full-time capacity for the first time. The station has been on the air continuously ever since bringing the community local news, sports, music and entertainment.

The Rose family, who purchased the radio station from legislator and Oxford native Stan Fox in 1989, are the fourth owners of the station and are very honored to serve the community.

“We are very thankful to be here in the community and to be able to continue a passion that my dad, John D. Rose, III had,” said WIZS Owner/Operator John Charles Rose. “He was fascinated by the radio and the notion that you could talk in one place and someone could hear you in another.”

In speaking of his father, who has been deceased ten years, Rose said,  “I miss him very much. It’s unbelievable that much time has gone by.”

John D. Rose, III was just 10 years old in 1955 when Harold V. Harrell, a tv and radio repairman from Oxford, started the station under the call letters WHVH. Lawrence Brandon, the owner of WWCO in Connecticut purchased the station from Harrell a few years later. The call letters were changed to WIZS around 1959, shortly after the station was sold to Stan Fox and his business partners Irv Fox and Seymour Dworsky.

In celebration of WIZS’ 50th anniversary in 2005, The Daily Dispatch in Henderson printed a publication in honor of the station that included a more detailed history and special memories from local citizens and businesses.

Today, WIZS is still in business, thanks in part to the focus on bringing concise, local news to the community. Recent changes to the programming structure were made with this in mind. Exciting things are happening at WIZS, including a new Beach Music Blast segment. Stay tuned…

Granville Central High School Holds Military Fair

A military fair was recently held at Granville Central High School located in Stem, NC on Wednesday, April 18, 2018.

Representatives from various branches of the military were present to provide information and answer questions.

All grade levels were invited to attend.  The fair provided students the opportunity to learn about the military, and if interested, which branch would be the best fit for them.

Munn Pleads Guilty to Two Counts of First Degree Murder

On Monday, April 30, 2018, during a session of Warren County Criminal Superior Trial Court, Kevin Burton Munn entered pleas of guilty in two counts of First Degree Murder. One count of First Degree Murder in the death of Vance County businessman James Thomas “Tommy” Ellington, Jr., and one count of First Degree Murder in the death of Lake Gaston resident Nancy Bowling Alford.

As part of his agreement, Mr. Munn will cooperate with authorities as to the investigation of other individuals involved in these cases, in exchange for two consecutive life sentences. Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Henry W. Hight, Jr. continued sentencing in this matter.

Below are statements from the Ellington and Alford families:

“The Ellington family continues to be grateful for the dedication of local and state law enforcement working in conjunction with the DA’s office to pursue justice in Tommy’s murder case. While today’s events will not replace the void we all feel with Tommy’s loss, our prayer is that it will aid the healing process for family and friends, as well as bring more peace of mind to the community. As this is an ongoing investigation, we are not able to comment further at this time.” – The Ellington Family

“The events of March 9, 2018, changed our family forever. We will forever be grateful to all of the law enforcement officers who worked tirelessly to apprehend the men responsible and who continue still to work in the investigation process. We are also very thankful to the Office of the District Attorney for their dedication to this case. We know that all of these people have put us on the path toward justice and pray daily for their continued resolve to bring safety to the communities they serve.” – The Alford Family

ANTHONY M. COPELAND, Secretary of Commerce, the State of North Carolina

Tony Copeland became North Carolina’s Secretary of Commerce in January 2017, named to the post by Governor Roy Cooper and marking a return to the agency for the experienced business executive. Earlier in his career, Mr. Copeland served as Assistant Commerce Secretary, leading the recruitment of nearly $12 billion in investment and the creation of 100,000 jobs. In this capacity, he worked with numerous international companies in China, Japan, Europe, South Korea and Israel, as well as a variety of domestic companies. 

 

Tony Copeland’s experience spans a wide range of economic development and business leadership roles. During the past decade, as a partner of a major law firm and owner of his own firm, Mr. Copeland has brought significant new corporate investment into North Carolina from both domestic and international sources. He brings an insider’s knowledge of the ways corporate investment and site decisions are made.

Mr. Copeland also served as executive vice president, secretary and general counsel of a telecommunications company, where he led the company’s growth from $38 million in revenues to more than $250 million. He led the senior executive team that secured $500 million in equity financing and planned, financed and installed more than 5,000 miles of fiber optic cable in the Carolinas and along the eastern seaboard. A native of Perquimans County, Mr. Copeland is a graduate of Duke University and the Western Michigan University School of Law.

Oxford Board of Commissioners’ Meeting – Tuesday, May 8

The Oxford Board of Commissioners will hold their next regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at 7 p.m. inside the Commissioners Board Room at City Hall – 300 Williamsboro Street, Oxford.

At this meeting, there will be a public hearing to receive citizen input as to the needs of low and moderate income residents and neighborhoods within the City of Oxford.
