Donations Of School Supplies Part of Oxford’s Back To School Bash Aug. 6

Teachers get as excited as schoolchildren when itā€™s time to get back-to-school supplies. Thereā€™s just something about opening a new box ofā€¦black dry erase markers?

It doesnā€™t evoke the same feeling as when opening a new box of crayons, but dry erase markers, loose-leaf paper and index cards are a few of the items that folks in and near Oxford are encouraged to donate to a ā€œStuff the Busā€ event scheduled for Friday, Aug. 6, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Itā€™s part of a Back to School Bash in the Littlejohn parking lot from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be food trucks on site and a Cruz-In. The movie Inside Out will be shown beginning at 8 p.m.

The Granville Ed Foundation and the Downtown Oxford Economic Development Corporation (DOEDC) are joining forces to collect the school supplies for teachers.

TownTalk: Come Grow With VGCC’s AgriTech Program

Vance-Granville Community Collegeā€™s South Campus is the site of the upcoming AgriTech program, one of the many continuing education classes offered at VGCCā€™s four campuses.

Tanya Weary, dean of business & industry solutions and of the South Campus in Creedmoor, said registration is open for the class, which will be held in-person one evening a week for 10 weeks; the remaining two-thirds of the classā€™s 96 hours will be completed online.

The class begins on Sept. 20, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and the cost is $188.25. Tuition assistance is available for eligible participants, she told John C. Rose on Tuesdayā€™s Town Talk, which you can hear in its entirety by clicking play below.

As a dean at VGCC, Weary said she enjoys seeing the many exciting things happening on and around the campuses in the four counties VGCC serves.

ā€œLives are being changed,ā€ Weary said. ā€œItā€™s an incredible experience to see and witness every day.ā€

The AgriTech program is one way to help participants gain knowledge about agriculture, whether itā€™s for launching a business, improving skills for someone who already works on a farm or other agriculture-related endeavors.

ā€œAgriculture is making an impact on society,ā€ Weary said. ā€œNo matter what realm of agriculture youā€™re going into, youā€™re making some kind of impact.ā€

Instructor Kelly Dixon will introduce topics such as sustainable and organic farming methods, equipment maintenance, plant, soil and animal sciences, among others. Dixon and her family farm in Granville County and Dixon is the ag teacher at Vance Charter School.

Weary said the class will also discuss basic computer skills and marketing techniques, both important tools for agricultural entrepreneurs who use social media or need to create marketing materials to promote their business.

Another project that VGCC is launching is the result of a $286,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that will provide professional development opportunities for K-12 educators to learn more about teaching agriculture and biology.

Weary said VGCC bought some drones that will be used to provide some hands-on opportunities for students to learn how to use drones in agriculture, from simple aerial photography to using drones to check fields.

Weary said U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics point to strong employment opportunities in agriculture between 2020 and 2025. ā€œThis program gives (students) an introduction into the economic, environmental and social impacts of agriculture,ā€ she said.

Vance, Granville, Warren Masks

Visitors to any indoor Warren County facility must wear masks while conducting business, effective Monday, Aug. 2. As of this publication, there are no mask mandates in Henderson or Vance County buildings, but officials told WIZS that they continue to monitor updates regarding mask recommendations from the state.

All visitors entering a Granville County facility should wear a face covering effective Tuesday, August 3, according to Lynn Allred, public information officer/grants coordinator. In a written statement, Allred said, “Employees should wear a face covering when engaging with the public; Employees ā€“ whether vaccinated or unvaccinated ā€“ should wear a face covering inside the workplace when within 6 feet of other people. (Face coverings are not necessary if the employee has a private workspace); Social distancing should be practiced wherever possible.”

Vance County Manager Jordan McMillen acknowledged that guidance changes, and ā€œat the current time, we are not planning to require masks within the county buildings,ā€ McMillen said in a statement to WIZS News. He added that officials are ā€œhighly encouraging the use of masks within the common areas and courtrooms at the courthouse due to the large concentration of individuals within these areas.ā€ According to McMillen, Chief District Court Judge John Davis issued a memo requesting the recommended use of masks in these areas.

ā€œWe ā€¦ continue to watch the guidance as it changes daily. Our intent is to follow state mandates as it relates to social distancing, mask wearing and other precautions if they are implemented again,ā€ McMillen said.

Henderson City Manager Terrell Blackmon said city officials currently are assessing the situation. ā€œAs we solicit additional feedback from the health department, a similar announcement may be forthcoming,ā€ Blackmon told WIZS in reference to what Warren County is doing.

In Warren County, County Manager Vincent Jones and Health Director Dr. Margaret Brake issued a statement concerning the updated mask requirement. Warren County is among the 92 N.C. counties with a high or substantial transmission of COVID-19, the statement read. The CDC recommends that residents of those areas need to wear masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status. County staff also will be wearing masks indoors.

As of this publication, Warren, Vance and Granville counties are considered “substantial” spread areas. Franklin County is a “high” spread area.

TownTalk: Saturday Cruise-In A Success

Combine two things that Brandon Boyd is passionate about – cars and animal welfare – and the result is overwhelmingly positive. And thatā€™s just what happened Saturday, July 31 at the annual Classic Car Cruise-In event in Henderson.

Folks came in from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. to the show at 284 US 158 Bypass in Henderson to see classic cars and to learn about Ruin Creek Animal Protection Society. Boyd told John C. Rose Monday on Town Talk that people came from all over to admire the cars. Attendance estimates range from 3,200 to 3,500 on the lot at one time, he said. “It was absolutely fantastic!” As visitors milled about, they also got a chance to see and hear about RCAPS and its mission to find homes for adoptable animals, and also to educate the public about caring for pets.

He said he would love for RCAPS to be able to go in to schools to talk with students about being responsible pet owners. That responsibility includes spaying and neutering pets.

He hopes to one day be able to provide an affordable spay and neuter program in Vance County. ā€œThatā€™s been a vision of the team at Ruin Creek,ā€ Boyd said, adding that perhaps through grant funding or other means, RCAPS can help reduce pet overpopulation.

ā€œThere are so many things that we can do, that we want to do,ā€ he said. ā€œI think the people of this area are going to see some really great thingsā€ from RCAPS in the future.

Throughout the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, pet adoptions nationwide spiked, he said. Now, however, with loosened restrictions on travel and people getting out more, those dogs and cats that were such a good idea a year ago are now finding themselves in shelters.

And the Vance County shelter is no exception.

From the Carolinas to California, Boyd said shelters are loaded with animals that people adopted. Now, those pet owners have the mentality of ā€˜letā€™s take him to the shelter and someone else will take him,ā€™ Boyd said.

ā€œTheyā€™re overrun by animals as a result of this problem.ā€

A pet owner has responsibilities to care for, to look after these animals. From proper veterinary care, to spay and neutering, to discipline, the responsibilities are many.

Thatā€™s one reason Boyd wants to start early and introduce pet owner responsibilities to school children. ā€œI donā€™t want to just find fault,ā€ he said. ā€œI want to correct the fault.ā€

He said RCAPS enjoys support from a wide base of donors from all 50 states and from 13 countries. Because of this support, RCAPS can keep transport vans on the road that take animals from Vance County up the East Coast, from Virginia to New York, and everywhere in between.

Boyd said the RCAPS staff deserves much credit for being good stewards of donor funds. ā€œWeā€™re so proud that people trust us to that degreeā€ to send money to support the cause. ā€œIt speaks volumes to meā€¦and Iā€™m so very proud of it.ā€
