Warren Offers Smart Start Basketball Class For Youngsters Ages 4-5

The Warren County Parks and Recreation is offering a new basketball program for 4- and 5-year olds call Smart Start Basketball. The program is a parent/child instructional program led by an instructor weekly for six weeks at the John Graham Gym.

The fee is $10 and includes a basketball for each child.

Register between Oct. 3 and Nov. 3 online at https://www.warrencountync.com/345/Parks-Recreation or in person at the parks and recreation office Monday-Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. The office is located at 113 Wilcox St., Warrenton.

Two sessions will offered on Saturdays, Nov. 5-Dec. 17. The first class begins at 10 a.m. and the second class begins at 11 a.m.

Space is limited for each class, so register soon.

Warren Winter Youth Basketball League Registration Opens Oct. 3

Registration for Winter Youth Basketball with Warren County Parks and Recreation begins Monday, Oct. 3 and runs through Thursday, Nov. 3. The winter youth league is for youth between 6-17 years. The registration fee is $10.

Registration can be completed online at  https://www.warrencountync.com/345/Parks-Recreation or in person between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday at the parks and recreation office, located at 113 Wilcox St., Warrenton.

Warren County Parks and Recreation is also seeking volunteer coaches for youth basketball season. Please submit volunteer application and complete an online background check at www.warrencountync.com/345/Parks-Recreation.

Registration For Warren Youth Sports League Open

Registration is now open for fall youth sports leagues for Warren County Parks and Recreation. Cheerleading, soccer, flag football, and tackle football are being offered, according to information from Warren County officials.

Registration can be completed online at any time, and at the Warren County Parks and Recreation office Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. The office is located at 113 Wilcox St., Warrenton.

In addition, there are special registration dates scheduled at the parks and rec office:

  • Thursday, July 21, until 7pm
  • Saturday, July 30, 9am-11:30am
  • Monday, Aug. 1, until 7pm

Youth interested in tackle football must register by Aug. 1. The fee is $15. Warren County will accept registration for ages 10-12 to compile a team to play in the Halifax-Northampton Youth Football League. This league requires a physical and the form can be obtained from the parks and recreation office at time of registration or by requesting it in advance to be emailed. Completed forms must be submitted no later than Aug. 1 to the parks and recreation office.

Register for cheerleading and flag football by Aug. 8. The fee for each of those sports is $10. Both groups are for young people ages 6-12.

Soccer is open to youth ages 5-18, and registration for Start Smart Soccer for children ages 3-5 will be Aug. 1-31.

Warren Announces New Community Services Hire, Will Serve As Recreation Director

The Warren County Board of Commissioners voted to approve the appointment of Bonnie Fitz as the new assistant director of community services.

Fitz is scheduled to begin work on May 16, 2022, according to a press release from Charla Duncan, senior assistant to County Manager Vincent Jones and the community & economic development director. Fitz’s primary role will be to serve as the county’s recreation director. Her annual salary will be $71,500.

Fitz brings more than 20 years of experience in the parks and recreation industry to her new role in Warren County. Most recently, Fitz was the parks and recreation manager for York County, Virginia. Her recreation background spans multiple local government organizations in South Carolina and Fitz has received multiple awards in her past roles, including the National Association of Counties Parks and Recreation Achievement Award in 2019 and 2020 in her role with York County.

“We are excited to diversify and grow our recreation programming,” said Commissioner Victor Hunt, who serves on the Parks and Recreation Commission. “We are confident Ms. Fitz will take us in the right direction.”

Warren Co. Parks and Recreation Department Seeks Contract Instructors

The Warren County Parks and Recreation Department is currently looking for contract instructors to teach recreation classes.

If you or someone you know have a way with people and a flair for arts, crafts, sports clinics, exercise classes, or other specialty classes, share your special skill and become a contract instructor with Warren County Parks and Recreation. These opportunities can be conducted virtually and, when it is safe to do so, the department will offer these classes in an in-person, group setting.

Instructors can set their class schedules, title, content, and subject (with the approval of the Recreation Department and dependent upon facility availability).

Instructors enrich program diversity and contribute to the overall success of program offerings. Interested individuals must first submit a Class Instructor Proposal Form; upon approval, instructors must pass a background check.
