Local COVID-19 Update: Vance, Granville & Warren County Report

As of June 2, 2020, there are 324 known COVID-19 cases in Granville County, 332 cases in Vance County, 66 cases in Warren County and 29,889 confirmed cases in North Carolina.

There are four outbreaks at congregate living facilities in the district – one at Federal Correctional Complex in Butner, NC; one at Murdoch Development Center in Butner, NC; one at Pelican Health in Henderson, NC; and one at Kerr Lake Nursing Home in Henderson, NC.

Of the total positive cases in each county, 142 in Granville County are associated with the prisons, 5 are associated with Murdoch, 58 in Vance County are associated with Pelican Health nursing home, and 32 are associated with Kerr Lake Nursing Home.

Of the 177 community-based cases in Granville County, 87 have been released from isolation and 4 are hospitalized.

Of the 142 cases in the prison system, 70 have been released from isolation.

Of the 242 community-based cases in Vance County, 120 have been released from isolation.

Of the 90 cases in congregate living facilities in Vance County, 31 have been released from isolation.

13 individuals in Vance County are hospitalized.

There have been a total of 34 deaths in the Granville Vance health district – 24 in Vance County and 10 with the Bureau of Prisons in Granville County.

Also as of June 2, the Warren County Health Department NC reports 66 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 in Warren County; 2 are hospitalized; 49 cases have recovered; 2 deaths related to COVID-19 (both had underlying health conditions).

Confirmed positive cases in Warren County range from 12 years of age to 83 years of age.

Warren County Reports First COVID-19 Related Deaths

Over the weekend, Warren County saw its first deaths attributed to COVID-19.

As of May 26, 2020, Warren County reported 54 confirmed positive cases; 33 recovered; five hospitalized; two deaths related to COVID-19. Both deaths were from hospitalized cases with underlying health conditions.

Warren County urges residents to continue to distance themselves from others, wash hands thoroughly and stay home if sick. While the state is easing restrictions,  continue to use safety precautions when leaving home.

Rabies Alert: Raccoon on Tower Road in Norlina Tests Positive

A raccoon taken on May 23, 2020, from Tower Road in Norlina has tested positive for rabies at the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health. 

The raccoon was killed by the citizen after it was found fighting with the citizen’s dog. The dog is current on its rabies vaccination and will be observed for 45 days by the owner. 

North Carolina law requires that all dogs, cats, and ferrets that are four months of age and older be kept current on their rabies vaccination. Failure to vaccinate pets is a violation of state law and local ordinance and owners can face fines and criminal charges. 

The Warren County Animal Control Department offers one-year rabies vaccinations. Vaccinations are resuming at the Animal Ark and are available Monday through Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. A vaccine is $5 per animal at the Animal Ark. Appointments can be made by calling the shelter at 252-257-6137.

Dogs and cats not current on their rabies vaccination that come into contact with a rabid animal have very few options.  One option is quarantining the pet for a period of up to six months at the owner’s expense; the second is euthanizing the pet.

The majority of wild animals testing positive for rabies in North Carolina continue to be raccoons, followed by skunks and foxes. Cats continue to surpass other domestic animals, such as dogs and livestock, in testing positive for rabies.

The feeding and keeping of stray and other unvaccinated cats presents a health risk to our communities and the animals themselves; this practice should be halted and discouraged. The disposal of food scraps in yards and wooded areas attracts animals in general and is unsanitary. Dispose of food scraps by composting or placing in covered rubbish containers to avoid attracting animals. 

Rabies is a fatal disease that has no cure for animals or humans. Feeding, keeping, or harboring of stray cats and dogs increases the risk of rabies being transmitted from stray animals to humans and is highly discouraged by Animal Control. Individuals who keep, feed, or harbor unvaccinated animals place the animals, themselves, and their community at risk of being exposed to this fatal disease.

United Way Awards $6,100 in Grants to Local Charitable Organizations

The United Way of Vance County has awarded $6,100 in grants to local charitable organizations to assist needy families in Vance and Warren counties with food insecurities.

The grant funding was made possible with contributions to our United Way from corporations that serve our area.

With the corporate contributions, our United Way established a COVID-19 Relief Fund to provide grants to local nonprofits to assist families in need, with a special focus on providing the families with food.

The corporate contributions were received from Duke Energy, Truist Bank (formerly BB&T) and Vulcan Materials Company.

The United Way of Vance County Board of Directors reviewed submitted applications for the grant funds and awarded monies to Area Christians Together in Service (ACTS) in Henderson, Life Life Outreach Inc. in Henderson, and Loaves & Fishes Food Ministry in Warrenton. These three outstanding charitable organizations are using the funds to supply families during the COVID-19 pandemic with necessary food items.

“Our United Way board of directors believe it is very important to support the needs of our community during this very difficult time,” said Terri Hedrick, treasurer of the organization. “We have been contacted by many families expressing a dire need for food. So, we knew immediately how we wanted to help once our United Way received the contributions.”

“We can’t thank the outstanding corporations enough for their amazing generosity to support our community and we are very glad to allocate the grant funds to ACTS, Life Line and Loaves & Fishes, which work tirelessly to meet the food needs of disadvantaged families on a regular basis.”

Warren Co. Board of Education to Hold Virtual Meeting May 12

Warren County Reports Nine Confirmed COVID-19 Cases, No Virus-Related Deaths

As of the afternoon of April 29, 2020, the Warren County Health Department received two (2) new positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the total confirmed cases to nine (9).

Two of those nine cases have recovered and there are zero (0) deaths related to COVID-19 in Warren County.

The numbers reported are not a net total; they are a sum total. This means that recovered cases are not subtracted from the total that is reported.

Health officials have already established that community spread is happening across the nation, so please continue to stay at home as much as possible, follow the stay at home order and Warren County curfew and implement safety precautions when out in public.

Warren Co. Schools Accepting Pre-K & Kindergarten Applications

Warren County Schools is now accepting applications for Pre-K and Kindergarten for the 2020- 2021 school year.

To register, parents may pick up an application packet from the school in the attendance zone of their residence. Applications will be accepted April 28 through May 12, 2020, from 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Completed applications can be returned to the school or the Central Office.

To be considered for 2020-2021 Warren County Pre-K programs, a child must be four (4) years old on or before August 31, 2020.

For Kindergarten, a child must be five (5) years old on or before August 31, 2020.

Warren Co. Commissioners Extend Curfew Through May 8

The Warren County Board of Commissioners enacted a curfew earlier this month that was meant to last the duration of Governor Roy Cooper’s stay at home order.

The curfew is in effect from the hours of 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily and will be extended through the new date of the order – May 8, 2020. During this time, travel should be reserved for situations deemed as essential in the governor’s order, such as medical care, grocery pickup or travel to/from an essential job.

Please heed the curfew and the stay at home order as we are doing everything in our power to #slowthespread of COVID-19 in our community.

Warren County Announces Fourth Confirmed Positive COVID-19 Case

The Warren County Health Department received confirmation of a positive COVID-19 test result on Saturday, April 25, 2020. Currently, there are a total of four (4) positive cases of COVID-19 in Warren County. Two of the positive cases have recovered and there are no deaths related to COVID-19.

Residents should remain diligent about complying with the Governor’s Stay at Home order and Warren County’s curfew; they should continue practicing prevention measures such as frequent hand washing and maintaining social distancing as we try to contain the spread of COVID-19 in Warren County.

Warren County will continue to update its COVID-19 resources page with updates on confirmed case counts. Residents may also check-in daily with the NC Department of Health and Human Services for their NC case count at https://www.ncdhhs.gov/divisions/public-health/covid19/covid-19-nc-case-count.
