Warren Library Gets $28,500 Grant To Better Serve The Community

Thanks to a grant totaling more than $28,000, the Warren County Memorial Library is kicking off a plan to seek community input that will expand the services it provides to patrons.

The $28,500 grant comes from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and is administered through the State Library of North Carolina. The IMLS provides funding to agencies affiliated with the State Library by using a population-based formula.

“This assessment will help the library to gather feedback from the community on how to best serve the residents in Warren County,” stated Library Director Christy Bondy.

“We want to expand our services as much as we can,” Bondy said. “To do that, we need to find out where our blind spots are. We’re looking for creative ways to serve the community and want to see everyone’s basic needs get met when it comes to literacy. But as libraries evolve, we’re here to help people in whatever way we can.”

The information gathered through the surveys and focus groups scheduled for the fall will be used to learn what services patrons use, but Bondy said it also will help learn why the community is not using the library.

“We will use the survey and focus group input to learn what services and resources the community is using, as well as what services are being provided that the population is unaware of,” Bondy said. “The feedback will also aid us in determining what could be added to improve the overall experience.”

The assessment will be conducted by Rethinking Libraries, LCC, a library consulting firm that helps clients to see their institutions differently and embrace changes to become more vibrant, 21st Century libraries. Rethinking Libraries has been involved in numerous facilities projects, strategic planning processes, building programs and other consulting work with hundreds of libraries across the United States. Clients range from small rural public libraries to large urban facilities.

The needs assessment portion of the project kicked off Aug. 4; paper copies are available at the library’s circulation desk; complete the online survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WCMLPRMedia.

Warren Library Gets 3 Grants Totalling More Than $58K

Warren County Memorial Library plans to use more than $58,000 in grant money to get a few projects off the ground.

The three grants total $58,468, according to information from Charla Duncan, Warren County’s public information officer. One grant will be used for creating storywalks at Buck Spring Park and Magnolia Ernest Recreation Park; another grant is for the expansion of the library’s collection through the NC Cardinal system; and the third grant is to hire consultants to assist in developing a new five-year strategic plan.

“The library is looking forward to implementing these three grants to better serve the county,” stated Library Director Christy Bondy. “The strategic plan updates will help gather feedback from the community on shaping the future of the library.”

The projects are supported by grant funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the federal Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

The federal funds help libraries deliver relevant and up-to-date services for their communities. At Warren County Memorial Library, the LSTA grants will help expand the library’s collection through the NC Cardinal system. Users can borrow materials from 60 other participating library systems statewide.

Warren County Memorial Library received three of the 48 grants for fiscal year 2023-2024 awarded to North Carolina libraries from this year’s federal allotment of $2,590,904.  The LSTA grant program administered by the State Library of North Carolina funds library projects across the state that advance excellence and promote equity by strengthening capacity, expanding access, and community engagement in North Carolina’s libraries.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The institute’s mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas. Through the LSTA Grants to States program, IMLS provides funds to state library agencies using a population-based formula. State libraries may use the appropriation to support statewide initiatives and services; they may also distribute the funds through competitive subgrants to public and academic libraries.  To learn more about the Institute, please visit www.imls.gov.

Warren County Library Has Blood Pressure Kits For Checkout

They probably won’t be tucked on the bookshelf between Bla- and Blu-, but Warren Memorial Library patrons can now check out blood pressure cuffs, thanks to a partnership with the American Heart Association.

The library has five self-monitoring blood pressure kits – available in English and Spanish, available for checkout for those with library cards, according to Library Director Christy Bondy.

“The blood pressure cuffs are a great addition to the library,” Bondy said in a statement.

“We are thrilled to partner with the American Heart Association in our efforts to build and support a strong and healthy community. Libraries have increasingly added health literacy initiatives to their resources and services. The aim of this project is to create informed individuals who can work with their health care provider to determine the best treatment of better overall health.”

Nearly half of all Americans have high blood pressure, or hypertension, yet don’t even know it. Left undetected or uncontrolled, high blood pressure increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Small changes can make a big difference, including taking your blood pressure daily from home. It’s a proven way to monitor and control blood pressure in between regular doctor visits.

Blood pressure kits check out for three weeks with two possible renewals.

Take note, however: the blood pressure kits must NOT be dropped off in the outside receptacles – they must be returned inside the library during library hours of operation.

The Warren County Memorial Library is located at 119 S. Front St.  Warrenton.

Warren Library Features Green Book, Oasis Spaces Exhibit Through January

Visitors to Warren County Memorial Library can learn more about Green Books and “oasis spaces” in an exhibit that will be open through the end of January.

Oasis Spaces: North Carolina Green Book Project, 1933-1966” is the title of the exhibit open now through Jan. 31 at the Warrenton library located at 119 S. Front St.

The exhibit is made possible through a partnership with the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources as part of the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission.

The exhibit reflects the commission’s research about “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” which identified business that in essence served as “oasis spaces” for African American travelers during the time of segregation. The book was both a travel guide and a tool of resistance designed to confront the realities of racial discrimination in the United States and beyond. It listed more than 300 North Carolina restaurants, hotels, tourist homes, nightclubs and beauty salons where African Americans would be welcomed.

“We are pleased to present this exhibit for the community to explore a part of history that has been overlooked,” said Library Director Christy Bondy.

The library has several programs planned that accompany the exhibit including film screenings, and a virtual visit with the author Calvin Ramsey.

The Green Book Project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The Warren County Memorial Library is located at 119 S. Front St., Warrenton, NC. For more information about the Green Book project, visit www.wcmlibrary.org.

Symphony Trombonist Coming To Warren Co. Library For Musical Program Aug. 10

Normally, a library is a quiet place where book lovers can sit and read and students can do research and get their homework done. But thanks to a partnership with Warren County Schools and the North Carolina Symphony, Warren County Memorial Library is pulling out all the stops for a morning of music and fun on Wednesday, Aug. 10.

Families are invited to stop by the library at 10 a.m. as Matthew Neff with the N.C. Symphony reads a book about music, talks about the sounds that instruments make, especially his instrument, the bass trombone.

The fun-filled event is part of the symphony’s Music Discovery program, funded by PNC Grow Up Great and the Warren County Community Foundation. It is geared for preschool and elementary-age children and their families.

Neff joined the symphony in January 2020 as a bass trombonist. Prior to joining the symphony, he was a member of the U.S. Navy Band in Washington, D.C., where he performed bass trombone in the Commodores jazz ensemble, brass quintet and ceremonial band. During his years in Washing on, he had an extensive freelance career and performed with symphonies across the Mid-Atlantic States. An advocate for music education, Neff has conducted master classes and clinics throughout the country and served as Adjunct Professor of Trombone at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, all while maintaining an active private low brass studio in his home. Neff is enjoying his new home in Raleigh with his wife, Tricia, and two of their four daughters.
