Related to the former Eaton Johnson Middle School, the Vance County School System will convey the school and property to the County for $1.

In a separate, unrelated agreement, the County is agreeing to utilize school capital funds, lottery funds if necessary, and any future school bonds to provide $8.3 million in capital funding for several facility usage redesigns, preventative maintenance items, school safety and technology initiatives in the school system over the next five years.

During the meeting, commissioners met and reviewed budget and timeframes related to a renovation at Eaton Johnson in order to move the Vance County Department of Social Services and the Senior Center to the property.

Vance Board of Elections to Remain in Dennis Building for Now

100.1 FM / 1450 AM WIZS; Local News broadcasts M-F 8am, 12pm, 5pm

Vance County Manager Jordan McMillen provided WIZS with the following summary of the Vance County Properties Committee meeting held Monday, September 30, 2019:

The committee began a discussion on the Henry A. Dennis Building, located at 282 S. Garnett St. in downtown Henderson, in light of a recent request from the Elections Department to vacate the building.

The committee made no commitments for moving any departments from the building but discussed the possibility of utilizing its space more efficiently. With the former Eaton Johnson Middle School building eventually being renovated for Vance Co. Department of Social Services and the Senior Center, we will have several existing spaces/buildings opening up.

One of the main messages from the committee meeting was that we need to work within our financial means when considering the future movement of departments and/or building renovations.

The committee also mentioned the history of the Dennis Building, and we will be doing some research to determine if it is registered or can be registered as historic.

Regarding jointly owned property, the committee will be recommending two jointly owned properties be conveyed to the City of Henderson to allow them to handle the legal work related to offers made on the properties.

DSS and Senior Center to former Eaton Johnson Moving Forward

Friday, May 17, 2019 the Vance County Properties Committee, consisting of Vance County Commissioners Dan Brummitt, Leo Kelly and Gordan Wilder, met.

Brummitt told WIZS News that the committee voted to move forward with planning for the Vance County Department of Social Services and the the Vance County Senior Center to move to the former Eaton Johnson Middle School building.

Now the committee will make that recommendation to the full board of commissioners.

Wilder said, “We are engaging an architectural firm to move forward with plans and intend to work very closely with them.”

County Manager Jordan McMillan said, “The committee met with the senior center advisory committee as well as leadership from the Department of Social Services and the senior center late last week. The committee will be recommending that design begin on Eaton Johnson to include space for DSS and the senior center.”

When asked about the former Henderson Middle School building on Charles Street, Brummitt said, “The County has taken no action on Henderson Middle School, but we would like to see it as a historical site.”

McMillan said, “Related to Henderson Middle School, the board previously took action not to acquire this building from the school system. It is my understanding the school system is exploring their options for surplussing the building with the idea that our board has recommended that it be added to the historical register and put into productive reuse.”
