Maria Parham Health Employee Receives Certified Cardiovascular Care Coordinator Certification

The ACC Accreditation Services is pleased to announce that Nancy Reavis of Maria Parham Health, has achieved recognition as a Certified Cardiovascular Care Coordinator.

As such, Nancy has demonstrated an enhanced skill set in team building, process improvement, strategic data utilization, provider education, and project management. Having successfully completed the cardiovascular Care Coordinator training and passed the certification examination, Nancy is permitted to use the designation “CCC” on business cards and correspondence.

“Nancy’s hard work and dedication to earn this certification represents the commitment our health system has to providing excellent cardiac care to our community,” stated Bert Beard, Chief Executive Officer of Maria Parham Health.  “Her role as our Chest Pain Coordinator is vital in our cardiac care and coordination for our patients. This is just another piece in our expanding cardiology care and services at Maria Parham Health. “

The purpose of becoming a Certified Cardiovascular Care Coordinator is to earn recognition as an individual who has acquired the knowledgebase and skill set to be successful in the coordinator role. The objectives of certification are to:

  • Promote standards of competency for coordinators in the leadership role
  • Promote professional and hospital success by helping coordinators define and obtain the requisite knowledge and skills to fulfill their responsibilities effectively
  • Provide special recognition to those coordinators who demonstrate mastery of an acquired body of knowledge and skills in the cardiovascular continuum of care through successful completion of the certification process

Henderson PD Crime of the Month: Hendersonian Suffers Gunshot Wound Inside Residence

On March 12, 2017 at approximately 9:33 PM officers with the Henderson Police Department responded to 250 Keene Street in reference to a shooting into a residence. Upon arrival officers that Jacqueline Terry had sustained injuries resulting from a gunshot to the leg. There were also four other individuals inside the residence at the time of the shooting whom did not report any injuries. Terry was transported to a local medical facility to receive further treatment for her injuries.

The investigation is being conducted by members of the Henderson Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division. If anyone should have any information related to this case, they are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 252-492-1925 or the Henderson Police Department at 252-438-4141. Crime Stoppers offers a reward of up to $2,000 for information that may lead to an arrest. Callers may remain anonymous.

Henderson PD Crime of the Month: No Limit Sweepstakes Robbed at Gunpoint

On March 29, 2017 at approximately 2:02 AM officers with the Henderson Police Department responded to 941 W. Andrews Avenue Suite F (No Limits Sweepstakes) in reference an armed robbery. Upon arrival, officers spoke with Elizabeth Black who stated that a subject forced his way into the business while pointing a handgun at her. The suspect took a brown envelope containing U.S. currency and ran out the front door of the business.

The investigation is being conducted by members of the Henderson Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division. If anyone should have any information related to this case, they are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 252-492-1925 or the Henderson Police Department at 252-438-4141. Crime Stoppers offers a reward of up to $2,000 for information that may lead to an arrest. Callers may remain anonymous.

VGCC to hold 33rd benefit golf tournament on May 2

Vance-Granville Community College’s 33rd Annual Endowment Fund Golf Tournament, presented by Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company, will be held at the Henderson Country Club on Tuesday, May 2, 2017. All event proceeds support the mission of the college, the Endowment Fund and student scholarships.

With the support of numerous golfers and sponsors, the annual event has raised more than $750,000 since its inception in 1985. The 2016 tournament alone generated a record-breaking $104,160.

This year’s morning and afternoon rounds will begin with shotgun starts at 8 a.m. and at 1 p.m. The afternoon round is sold out, but there are openings in the morning round.

The format is four-person “Captain’s Choice Super Ball.” Golfers can form their own teams of four, or sign up and be put on a team. Teams will be handicapped based on handicaps supplied by each player. Trophies will be awarded for first net, second net and first gross. Other awards will be given for “closest to the pin” and “longest drive.”

A hole-in-one on Hole 9 will be rewarded with a 2017 Cadillac XT5, courtesy of Charles Boyd Chevrolet Cadillac Buick GMC. A player who hits a hole-in-one (with a $10 donation) on Hole 16 will win $5,000, while another $5,000 will be awarded to the VGCC Endowment Fund.

The cost for one golfer to enter the tournament is $150. In either round, that fee includes greens fees, cart, meals, gift bag and practice balls.

A light breakfast, lunch and dinner (immediately following the afternoon round) will be served in the HCC clubhouse. A silent auction and door prize drawings will be held in conjunction with dinner.

Businesses and individuals can take advantage of sponsorship opportunities at various levels. Businesses may also donate products or premium items featuring the company’s logo to be placed in golfers’ gift bags, or to be given as door prizes.

Eighteen Year Old Hendersonian Shot and Killed

On Sunday, April 02, 2017, at 7:16 p.m. members of the Henderson Police Department Patrol Division responded to Party Pick Up, 655 N. Garnett Street, Henderson in response to calls of someone shot.  When officers arrived they located one victim, Talik Ahmad Harris, 18, 1220 Second Street, Henderson.  Harris was determined to be deceased upon arrival of emergency medical personnel.

The investigation into this matter has been turned over to the Henderson Police Department Criminal Investigation Division.  Anyone witnessing this event or having been in the area around the time of the incident is asked to contact the Henderson Police Department at 252-438-4141 or the Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers at 252-492-1925.

Vance County Schools FRC to host “Senior Night” Info Session

The Vance County Schools Family Resource Center is hosting a free “Senior Night” information session on Tuesday, April 4, from 3 to 6 p.m. for high school students and their parents.

Students and parents can come at any time during the three hours to receive valuable information from high school counselors about the college application process, financial aid opportunities and educational services and programs provided through Vance-Granville Community College.

The session will be held in the Family Resource Center, located in the school system’s Administrative Services Center at 1724 Graham Avenue in Henderson.

Arts Alive Talent Showcase a Success for Vance County Schools

The Arts Alive Talent Showcase for Vance County Schools on Saturday, March 25, featured about 70 students from the school system who shared their amazing talents in singing, dancing, reciting dramatic readings and playing instruments on the stage at the McGregor Hall Performing Arts Center.

The showcase also featured over 200 pieces of visual art work done by students from elementary to high school in Vance County Schools. Hundreds of local residents, family members, local educators and others came through McGregor Gallery throughout the afternoon to view the art work on Saturday. The showcase culminated with the two-hour show in the center’s auditorium that included an audience of over 600 people.

Student performers in the show were the Southern Vance High School Ensemble; Ciara Bundy of Henderson Middle School; Daniel Thorpe of Southern Vance High School; Elizabeth Black of Aycock Elementary School; the Dabney Royalty Show Choir of Dabney Elementary School; Miracle Chin and Sarah Burns of Southern Vance High School; Anna Watkins of Aycock Elementary School; the Clarke Elementary Praise Dance of Clarke Elementary School; Jadyn Jones of Northern Vance High School; My Brother’s Keeper, who are five brothers attending Southern Vance High, Henderson Middle and Aycock Elementary schools; the Shiloh Baptist Liturgical Dance with performers from Southern Vance High and Henderson Middle schools; Valentina Ortega- Mora of Aycock Elementary School; Jesse Peele of Carver Elementary School; Kaitlyn Tant of Southern Vance High School; the Southern Vance High School Step Team; Jose Gonzalez and Jordan Lewis of Southern Vance High School; Anterrahn Harris of Northern Vance High School; and the Southern Vance High School Drumline.

Arts Alive was presented by the Vance County Public School Foundation and Vance County Schools as a celebration of the arts in our public school system. It also served as a fundraiser for the foundation. Proceeds from Arts Alive will be used by the foundation to support educational initiatives in Vance County Schools.

Numerous Guilty Pleas Surface from Vance County Criminal Superior Trial Court last week

HENDERSON, NC  — A session of Vance County Criminal Superior Trial Court was held during the week of March 20, 2017, and Judge Michael O’Foghludha presided over the session. The Office of District Attorney Michael D. Waters was represented by Assistant District Attorneys Melissa Pelfrey and Onica Fuller.

Several pleas were taken during the morning of March 20, 2017. Kyshaun Norrell pleaded guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter and received a 62 to 87 month active sentence in the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Division of Adult Correction (DAC).

Jimmy Kelly pleaded guilty to Possession of Burglary Tools and Attempted Breaking and Entering and received an 8 to 17 month active sentence in the DAC.

Maurio Solomon pleaded guilty to Felony Fleeing to Elude and Assault with a Deadly Weapon and received a 15 to 27 month active sentence in the DAC.

Crystal Tuck pleaded guilty to Misdemeanor Larceny and received a 120 day active sentence in the DAC.

Percell Richardson pleaded guilty to Possession of Firearm by Felon and received a 12 to 24 month active sentence which was suspended for 18 months of supervised probation.

Larry Ayscue pleaded guilty to Manufacturing Marijuana and received a 10 to 21 month active sentence which was suspended for 24 months of supervised probation.

Demario Henderson pleaded guilty to Possession of Heroin, Felony Maintaining a Vehicle/Dwelling, Misdemeanor Fleeing to Elude, and Misdemeanor Possession of Marijuana and received a 5 to 15 month active sentence which was suspended for 18 months of supervised probation.

On Tuesday afternoon, March 21, 2017, the State began the trial of State vs. Alan Gibson for the 2009 murder of Montrell Alston in Henderson, NC. Mr. Gibson was found guilty of First Degree Murder and received a sentence of life in prison. Mr. Gibson was also found guilty of Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury in which he received a 38 to 55 month active sentence. These two sentences were consolidated. He was also found guilty of First Degree Burglary. This case was prepared for trial by Assistant District Attorneys Melissa Pelfrey and Onica Fuller, and was investigated by Detective Allen Simmons and officers with the Henderson Police Department under the direction of Chief Marcus Barrow.
