Engage your child’s senses in play

Young children learn through exploration. Kids explore with their whole bodies, using all of their senses. Find ways to help your child explore their world by engaging their senses while they play. Play experiences with water, sand and finger paints encourage your child to feel, touch, look at and manipulate things with different textures.

Blending finger paints brings the world of colors to life. Cooking with adults can engage your child’s sense of smell, taste and touch. Finding play materials your child can feel, smell, taste and see will engage their senses and make playtime fun.

Parenting tip – week of 4/23/18

Poison Ivy

Poison ivy is a common plant in our area that can cause an itchy rash.  Remember the old saying “Leaves of three – let it be”? This is a good way to help you identify poison ivy plants. The plant has leaves that grow in clusters of three. These leaves are usually 2 to 4 inches long, and the plant can grow as a groundcover, a small bushy plant or a vine. Learn how to identify this plant to make sure your outside adventures are happy ones.

Parenting Education Opportunities in Vance County

Tonya Smith, program coordinator with Franklin-Vance-Warren Opportunity, Inc. (F-V-W), and Jean Bell, parenting education coordinator with the Cooperative Extension Center, were recently on air to discuss parenting education opportunities in Vance County.

April’s designation as National Child Abuse Prevention Month makes this a great time to spread the word on educational opportunities for parents.

“Sometimes parenting is a hard job,” said Bell. “Our services help to teach parents to discipline their children in nonviolent ways.”

The Vance County Cooperative Extension Center, located at 305 Young Street in Henderson, currently offers two parenting programs – the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program and the Incredible Years series.

According to Bell, the Triple P program teaches parents effective, nonviolent ways to help their child learn appropriate behavior.

“Kids are going to follow what they see,” Bell said. “If a child grows up in a house with a lot of violence, they are more likely to try to solve problems with violence.”

The Incredible Years, a 15-week series, focuses on parenting issues such as why it’s important to play with children, why and how to praise your children, appropriate rewards, healthy eating tips, timeout and much more.

The Cooperative Extension Center also publishes a monthly newsletter titled Growing Together. This newsletter is geared towards parents with preschool-age children, but according to Bell, is useful for any parent with young children.

“With these programs, we are trying to make sure that parents have the tools that they need to help kids grow up to be happy and productive adults,” Bell said.

F-V-W offers Circle of Parents, a support group for local parents, every Monday night at 5:30 p.m. at 180 South Beckford Drive in Henderson.

This 40-week program is offered free of charge. Free childcare during the meeting, free dinner, fun activities for the children and field trips are also offered.

Meetings typically last two hours and participating adults hear from speakers on various topics relating to parenting, ask questions and discuss their thoughts and concerns.

According to Smith, all participants who attend at least three meetings receive a $25 gas gift card.

The Circle of Parents support group often relies on word-of-mouth to attract interested participants, but they also distribute flyers and receive referrals from community agencies.

“It is a great support group; just one big family,” said Smith.

Volunteers Needed for Next Coop Food Giveaway

VANCE COUNTY FOOD GIVEAWAY!

On Thursday, July 13, 2017 the NC Central/Eastern Food Bank will be distributing bags of food to community members who are in need of food at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market, 210 Southpark Drive, Henderson, NC.

The distribution will start at 10:00 a.m.

Citizens will receive disbursements using a drive-through method, as bags will be brought to individual cars when citizens arrive at the site.

4-H Congress Registration is Open

What is Congress?

North Carolina 4-H Congress is an annual educational event sponsored by North Carolina 4-H at NC State University and planned by the State 4-H Council. The council is composed of 20 young people who serve as officers from their respective districts and 4 state officers who are elected at Congress. NC 4-H Congress will be attended by approximately 600 youth ranging in ages from 13 to 18 and representing every county in North Carolina.

 

Guidelines

WHO: Any North Carolina 4-H’ers ages 13-18 as of January 1, 2017 is eligible to attend

Where : NC 4-H Congress activities are held on the campus of NC State University , the Jane S McKimmon Center , and the North Carolina State Fairgrounds.

WHAT: North Carolina 4-H Congress is an annual state level event

Costs: $100.00 which will include most meals, transportation and lodging.

Vance County Cooperative Extension to hold pesticide disposal day tomorrow

Do you have lawn, garden or farm chemicals you no longer need? Do you have products more than three years old?

Protect your family, your pets and the environment by bringing unneeded chemicals to our pesticide disposal day.

This event will be held on Thursday, May 25th, 10 am to 2 pm at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market (210 Southpark Dr., Henderson, NC).

We will accept all pesticide products, including herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, etc. in original, labeled containers. Both liquids and solids (e.g. granules, powders) are acceptable. For large containers (e.g. 5 gallons or more) or large quantities, please call in advance.

We CANNOT accept: fertilizer, paint, solvents, gasoline, household cleaners, or other household hazardous waste.

Food Safety Workshop for Produce Farmers

On May 16, produce farmers have an opportunity to learn more about managing food safety risks from farm to market by attending a full day workshop on Navigating the Harmonized GAP Audit. This event, hosted by North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Vance County Center will be held at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market in Henderson.

The workshop will combine classroom and on-farm instruction to provide producers with the tools needed to identify potential food safety concerns, as well as strategies to minimize potential contamination. Growers who participate will be provided with resources to implement an effective on-farm food safety program. The goal of this workshop is to provide farmers with the tools to reduce food safety risks and meet market requirements. Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance to fulfill training requirement for those undergoing a GAP audit.

NC Cooperative Extension to rebrand

Raleigh, N.C. – NC State Extension and The Cooperative Extension Program at N.C. A&T State University have launched a rebranding effort for their strategic partnership known as N.C. Cooperative Extension. Effective immediately, a new logo is being rolled out in local Extension centers across the state, as NC State and N.C. A&T adopt a new marketing strategy to grow awareness and engagement for N.C. Cooperative Extension.

N.C. Cooperative Extension comprises the respective land-grant universities, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA), and 101 local governments statewide.

Growing awareness, creating prosperity
Dr. Rich Bonanno, associate dean and director of NC State Extension, said, “feedback during the planning phase made clear that those who know Extension love Extension, but many North Carolinians don’t know us or recognize the educational services being offered by these two premier universities in their own communities.”

Extension professionals in all 100 counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians translate research-based information and technology from NC State and N.C. A&T into everyday applications, providing educational programs specializing in agriculture, food and nutrition, 4-H youth development, community development and the environment.

“It’s critical to our mission and the growth of our state that we bolster efforts to provide North Carolinians with research-based tools from our universities, which starts by introducing ourselves with a fresh look,” added Bonanno.

Through the collective efforts of the individual partners, who form a vast network dating back to 1914, N.C. Cooperative Extension bridges the state’s two land-grant campuses with communities statewide.

Redesigned logo and simplified identity

NC State and N.C. A&T have introduced a new logo for their N.C. Cooperative Extension partnership, highlighting the involvement of each university. It’s a simple but key step according to Sheri Schwab, director of county operations with NC State Extension.

“It’s important that we emphasize the presence of the universities in communities across the state, while maintaining a unique identity for the Cooperative Extension partnership. People recognize the value behind NC State and N.C. A&T; we want them to know they have access to the latest research discoveries without being on campus.”

Vance County Community Resource Fair Coming This Thursday

We are counting on agencies/vendors throughout Vance County and surrounding areas to join forces to provide an opportunity to expose youth and citizens to possible career paths in Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences/ Human Services, Youth Development, and Community and Rural Development to make our citizens more competitive in a global society. This year we will also be collaborating with Vance County’s Week of the Young Child Events that will take place April 24 – 30, 2017 throughout the community.

On Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Western Vance High School, located at 2785 Poplar Creek Rd, Henderson, NC 27537, several community agencies and Vance County Schools will host the 4th Annual Community Resource Fair.  The Fair will be open to the public during the school day starting at 9am – 3pm.

Vance County Coop Director Morris White to Head Durham Extension

I have bittersweet news. The good news is that on April 3, 2017, I will begin a great new venture as the County Extension Director for Durham County!  My email address will remain the same and I will continue to serve as the point of contact for the two major programs taking place in Vance County; ECA District Day on April 20th and the Vance County Community Resource Fair on April 27, 2017.

In addition, while Vance County begins its search for the next director, our Vance County 4-H Agent (Turner Pride) has been appointed by our District Director to serve as Interim Director.  It is my sincere hope that you will show Turner and the entire team the same support you have shared with me over the years.

The sad portion of the bittersweet news is that I will truly miss Vance County.  Over the last four years, you all have greatly impacted both my professional and personal life.  I have become a better person as together, we have accomplished so much.  From the Vance County Community Resource Fair​ to the ​Voices of Vance, Community Voices project, I ​thank you for allowing me to serve as your leader.  I know from the sacrifices you all have made to make our work successful that it is because of people like you “Goodness Grows in Vance”.

So let us continue to remain in touch as Vance County continues t​o be a place where the seeds of goodness can continually grow.
