Vance County Animal Services is pleased to announce that they are the recipient of $1,667.50 of a total $10,005 Spay/Neuter Grant from Community Partnership for Pets though the Bissell Pet Foundation. The total grant has been divided between six rural NC Counties.

This grant will be used for:

Spay/Neuter for animals belonging to citizens in the community that do not qualify for the state funded spay/neuter program.

These funds will help citizens in our community get their personal pets spayed/neutered to reduce the number of unwanted animals being born in the community. This will also reduce the number of animal intakes at the Vance County Animal Shelter.

West End Community Watch Hears From Animal Services at March Meeting

-Write up courtesy Claire Catherwood, West End Community Watch

Notes from the West End Community Watch meeting held on March 19, 2019:

The speaker for March 19 was Frankie Nobles, chief of Animal Services for Vance County and Henderson. The name was changed to “Animal Services” from “Animal Shelter” because the new title better fits the current goals.

The new facility opened in 2016 and it is equipped to handle all types of animals. Livestock is housed outside. There is inside housing for 75 dogs and 80 cats. Currently, there are three Animal Service officers in addition to Nobles.

A visitation room is available for people who want to interact with animals before they adopt. The cost for adopting a dog is $150, which covers spaying/neutering, deworming, a flea treatment, vaccines, micro-chipping, a heartworm test and a wellness check. (Prospective adoptees will be told if the animal is not healthy.)

The adoption fee for a cat is $100. It includes spaying/neutering, deworming, a flea treatment, vaccines, micro-chipping, leukemia/aids test and a wellness check.  Rabies shots cost $5.

Veterans walk the dogs regularly. All types of volunteers are needed. Frankie Nobles welcomes visitors, questions, and volunteers at any time.

A FREE Spay/Neuter program is now available to ALL citizens of Henderson and Vance County because of a very generous grant given to Animal Services

The Ruin Creek Animal Protection Society picks up puppies and kittens from Animal Services every Friday. Those animals are transported to points north, where they are adopted. In northern states, the spay/neuter laws are very strict. As a result, there are not enough animals available for adoption. Ruin Creek Animal Protection Society also posts photos of animals daily and networks with surrounding areas.

On Saturday, March 30, Animal Services will hold a Clean-Up Day for Brodie Road in Henderson between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. All necessary supplies and equipment will be provided. Volunteers are needed.

On Saturday, April 13 from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m., Animal Services will hold a Veterans Dog Walk Day. Volunteers are needed. Plan to attend and walk a few dogs.

Plans are in the works to begin a Pet Responsibility Program in the public schools for 4th-grade students. The course will run for five weeks and will end with an essay contest.

Asked whether Henderson has a “Leash Law,” Nobles noted that there is not a leash law, but dogs must be “controlled” at all times. That means voice commands to dogs that obey are sufficient. Dogs may be in invisible fencing or tied out. Citizens can come before a committee to express concerns. It takes the citizens working together to make a change.

Community Partnership for Pets $10k Grant to Vance County

Frankie Nobles, Chief of Vance County Animal Services, told WIZS News in a press release that Vance County is the recipient of a $10,000.00 spay/neuter grant.

The grant was applied for on January 26, and Nobles indicated it would be used as follows:

  • Spay/Neuter for citizens in the community who are considered low income, but do not qualify for our free program.
  • Free spay/neuter and rabies vaccines for families turning in litters of puppies/kittens (Prevent a Litter)
  • Start a TNR program for cats in the community.

TNR stands for Trap-Neuter-Return.

Nobles said, “These funds will be a great help getting animals in the community spayed/neutered. We anticipate that with this assistance for more citizens, we will see fewer litters of puppies and kittens being brought into the shelter. We are also hoping to see our yearly intakes at the shelter decrease each year as we start a TNR program for feral cats in the community.”

ASPCA Grant Will Help Vance Animals

— courtesy of Vance County

Vance County Animal Services is pleased to announce that it is a recipient of a $7,865.00 anti-cruelty grant from the ASPCA.

The grant was applied for on September 30, 2017 and will be used for:

  • Purchase more cases for cruelty case animals
  • Purchase feeders for our pastures for our livestock cases
  • Purchase hay ring for our pasture for our livestock cases
  • Purchase water tanks for our pasture for our livestock cases
  • Purchase lead lines/halters for our equine cases
  • Purchase enrichment toys and supplies for our livestock
  • Purchase a video camera for video footage of cruelty cases
  • Purchase a camera and accessories for taking better pictures at our cruelty investigation
  • To send two Animal Services Officers to Leti Cruelty Investigation School

These items would greatly improve our animal cruelty investigations by having the ability to take better, more detailed pictures and videos for a greater chance of an animal cruelty conviction. It would also help us provide appropriate care and housing for the animals in our custody. The enrichment toys will help us provide valuable socialization for livestock, which will increase their chances of getting adopted. These items are essential for us to provide the proper care.
