The Vance County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division alongside Vance County Animal Services conducted an investigation into the incident, which resulted in James Bradley Pierce of 140 Strawberry Lane Henderson being charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals. Pierce was given a court date of May 6, 2024 for the charge.

Rabies Alert

Rabid Skunk Case Confirmed On McNair Drive

Vance County Animal Services has confirmed a case of rabies in a skunk that was found on McNair Drive on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

As a reminder, state law requires all dog and cat owners to keep their pets’ rabies vaccinations up-to-date. Even if your pet is current on its rabies vaccination, if you live in the area of McNair Drive, animal services officials recommend getting a booster.

The Vance County Animal Shelter offers rabies vaccines for $5. Come to the shelter, located at 1243 Brodie Rd. on Mondays between 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and every other Saturday between 8 a.m. and 12 noon.

Call the shelter 252.492.3136 for more information.

Petco Provides $10k More for Vance Animals

The Petco Foundation awarded Vance County Animal Services $10,000 in early March.

The Save Pet Lives Grant will be used for just that, lifesaving efforts of pets in Vance County.

Chief of Vance County Animal Services Frankie Nobles said in a press release, “These funds will help save lives of animals at the Vance County Animal Shelter as well as be used for spaying and neutering community pets.”

He indicated the grant money could also be used to pay unforeseen vet expenses for animals at the shelter.

This marks the second time a Petco Grant has been received in Vance County and is among a short list of organizations that have periodically awarded such grants here locally.

Petco recently opened a retail space in Vance County.

City-County Deal Could Add 4th Officer To Animal Services Staff

Vance County Animal Services is one step closer to adding an animal services officer to its three-member team who would be responsible for responding to calls within the Henderson city limits.

Frankie Nobles met with Vance County Manager Jordan McMillen and members of the commissioners’ Human Relations Committee Wednesday afternoon to discuss details of the arrangement, which basically states that the city of Henderson will foot the bill – roughly $51,000 in salary and benefits – for the additional position.

The city has been asking for increased service from animal services, and Nobles has asked for more staff for the past couple of years, but the money just wasn’t to be found. The city-funded position would provide another officer in the county department.

Nobles said that between Jan. 1 and Nov. 29, there were 761 incidents reported to animal services in the city; in that same period, there were 778 incidents received from the county.

Having a fourth officer will help the small staff, Nobles said.

“It really does help,” he said, adding that having another person in the rotation gives everybody else a break and helps reduce burnout. He said the animal services officers routinely work their regular shifts then log an additional 15-30 hours on the weekends when they’re on call.

The committee approved the recommendation, and the matter will come before the board of commissioners at its meeting next week for final approval.

Vick Receives 2021 Optimist Award For Outstanding Service For Work At Vance Animal Services

Chris Vick of Vance County Animal Services has received the 2021 award for outstanding service from the Henderson Optimist Club.

Optimist Club President Tommy Farmer presented the award to Vick on Wednesday at the Animal Services Building on Brodie Road.

Farmer told WIZS News that the COVID-19 pandemic, created the need for the club’s annual  Respect for Law campaign to be conducted differently this year.

The club usually hosts the winners and their families at an awards dinner, but this year, club members are presenting the awards individually.

The various enforcement departments across the county submit nominations for the award, Farmer said. Animal Services Chief Frankie Nobles said he nominated Vick for being “hard-working, dependable (and) dedicated,” and for being “an overall good employee for Vance County.”

Accompanying Farmer for the presentation was Britt Sams, who chairs the Respect for Law committee.

Covid Case Closes Vance County Animal Shelter To Public For A While

The Vance County Animal Shelter is closed until further notice, according to a printed notice on the front door of the facility.

This is a covid-related situation.

Chief Animal Control Officer Frankie Nobles told WIZS, “We had a positive case, and we are taking all precautions to keep the public safe.”

Vance County Manager Jordan McMillen said, “As far as operations within our animal services department, we are still able to make emergency response calls with the staff that we have available – albeit a limited staff at the moment. Although the shelter is shut to the public this week internally we will be able to continue with feeding, cleaning and working with the animals, but due to staff shortages and to keep the public safe we have closed the shelter this week.”

The Ruin Creek Animal Protection Society of Henderson, which normally loads up and transports shelter animals each Friday night, has indicated to WIZS that the normal two masked folks from the society are not being allowed inside the shelter this week.  To complete the adoption run anyway, and attempt to keep the adoption lines open to the northeast to places like New York and Pennsylvania, Ruin Creek Animal Protection is attempting to work with others, including Granville County.
