Third Overtime Score Propels Vance Charter School Women’s Soccer to Elite 8

The Vance Charter School women’s soccer team defeated Voyager Academy Monday night 2-1 on an Addison Clary assist to Abby Cole for a one-touch score.

Coach Johnny Yount told WIZS News, “(The) second overtime 10-minute period was ours and carried over to the first 5-minute OT.”

The winning score came in the first minute of the third overtime as the 12th-seeded Knights upset 4th-seeded Voyager in Durham.

Yount said, “(This is) such an incredible achievement for this program and everyone involved.”

Vance Charter will face top-seeded Woods Charter on Wednesday at 6 p.m., according to Coach Yount, in the Elite 8 round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state playoffs.

High school soccer overtime rules require two 10-minute periods which are not sudden victory.  The contest becomes sudden victory in the third OT.

SportsTalk: Coach Bunn Talks Vance Charter Softball, Friday’s Game

Could this be the year that Vance Charter’s Softball team advances beyond the quarter finals?  Head coach Brian Bunn would like to think so.  This is the third trip to the quarter finals for the Knights. With a team heavily laden with seven seniors, Bunn and his team will have the chance to advance tomorrow (Friday) at Oxford Park when Vance Charter takes on Perquimans County. While Perquimans is obviously a good team to have made it this far in the playoffs, they are young and Bunn hopes his team’s experience will pay off tomorrow.

“It’s been an awesome, awesome experience,” Bunn said of working with the seniors. “It’s a coach’s dream, these seniors to lead the team,” Bunn continued. The Knights have taken that experience and used it to go undefeated in the conference this season and those seven seniors have a combined 47-10 record over their varsity career. One of the reasons the Knights have been so successful is they aren’t easily rattled.  “No matter what happens, they keep their composure,” Bunn explained.  Bunn said, while the girls on the team have a lot of fun, they also know when to get serious and practices can get quite intense. Six of those seven intense seniors will be moving on to play at the college level next year.

In addition to senior leadership, Bunn says scheduling non-conference powerhouses like East Alamance and East Wake has helped toughen up his team and contributed to the Knights winning twelve of the last thirteen games. The Knights hope those winning ways continue.

Tomorrow night’s game at Oxford Park between the Vance Charter Knights and Perquimans Co. gets underway at 5pm and tickets are only $7.

Coach’s Corner: Kayla Simmons WIZS Player Of The Week Honors

“We don’t often play in close games,” said Vance Charter Knights’ head women’s basketball coach Brian Howard on the Coach’s Corner of SportsTalk with Trey Snide. However, the Knights found themselves in a nail biter this week against Granville Central.  The 6 – 3 Knights scored with 4 seconds left to pull out a 60 – 59 win over Granville Central who fell to 5 – 6.  Kayla Simmons was the game’s hero scoring the last second basket. She totaled 17 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. With her performance, she was named WIZS Player of the Week.

Simmons and the Knights got off to a great start with an early 15 point lead but a series of turnovers allowed Granville Central to get back in the game. Coach Howard said the close game was beneficial to his team. The Knights get a lot of minutes from two freshmen and Howard said the stress of a close game was helpful to those freshmen players.

In speaking about the Granville Central game after Simmons hit the winning shot Howard said is first thought wasn’t about the shot but about getting back on defense. Four seconds can be an eternity in basketball and Howard wanted to make sure his team was prepared for a last second shot by Granville Central.

Howard said he expects that level of play from Simmons every game, She certainly delivered against Granville Central.  Congratualations to Kayla Simmons, the WIZS Player of the Week.

Vance Charter School Reinstates Principal by 9-4 Vote

Monday night in closed session, the Vance Charter School board voted 9-4 to reinstate its principal, Sean Connolly.

The closed session lasted 30 minutes, followed by the announcement that Connolly was reinstated as principal with stipulations until July 17th.

Connolly was suspended in late April, and the news story from that date is linked here.

The stipulations were not named.  The chairman of the board of directors at Vance Charter School, Billy Davidson, told WIZS News, “And the reason being, I think that’s a private kind of thing.  It’s what we think he needs to (do), what changes need to be made and what he needs to accomplish.”

The approaching end of the school year is one reason Connolly was reinstated before the charges against him were resolved by the court system.  Those court proceedings are presently continued until June 12th.  “That’s the reason we had to do something because we needed him desperately to be back to help Dr. Read close out this year and make plans for next year.  We only had one administrator, and when you’ve got the number of students we have with one administrator, it is difficult.  We were starting to get into some serious trouble,” Davidson said.

As to the reinstatement lasting until July 17th, pending any court decision, Davidson said, “That’s a regular July meeting, and that’s one of the reasons we picked that date.  And, we’ll discuss the stipulations and the progress and go from there.”

Monday’s 9-4 vote was done by closed vote, but Davidson said all the votes were read out loud so everybody would know what the vote was.  No one knows who voted how, but everyone knows what the number was.
