SportsTalk: Ryan Parker of Vance Charter Talks About Lacrosse and His Future

Ryan Parker has had a lacrosse stick in his hand since he was about seven years old.  Now a senior at Vance Charter, that experience has paid off as the Knights went to the state playoffs this season compiling a 13-6 record. With 116 points on the season, Parker finished as one of the top scorers in the state.  He started playing in his yard with his brother and credits him along with his coaches Dan and Dennis Sandlin for his love of the game and to his success.

The road has not always been an easy one. During his freshmen year, Vance Charter didn’t have enough players to field a team and during his sophomore year the Knights only had the opportunity to play in four games before cv-19 caused the team, like many others, to close up shop. During Parker’s junior year, fall sports were pushed to spring and that meant Parker was playing and practicing lacrosse and soccer at the same time, but all of that hard work paid off in his senior year with the Knights making the state lacrosse playoffs. “It was our best season,” Parker said. “The team bonded.  We have a sense of brotherhood,” Parker added.

Parker is hoping to eventually become part of a Division I program and would love to go to Jacksonville University, but for now he will be heading to ECU in the fall and is planning to play club lacrosse.  Parker will majoring in marketing and sales.

SportsTalk: Vance Charter Womens Soccer Heads To Playoffs

In only his second year at the helm of the Vance Charter Knights Women’s Soccer team, Coach Johnny Yount has his team in the playoffs. While he’s happy they are in the playoffs, he is aware that work is still to be done to get the team where he wants them to be. “We need to be passing better, and we have had low energy,” Yount said of his team.  The Knight’s regular season record is 6-8-3 overall and 4-5-1 in the conference. That puts them at 12th in Division 1 A East. “That’s not exactly where we want to be,” Yount said of their current position.

Throughout the season the team has relied on seniors Riley Fuller and Makenzie Montgomery. Fuller, who is playing on a bad knee, will likely have to have surgery at some point. In addition to the senior leadership, the Knights have also had solid play from freshmen Katherine Suther and Sarah Ranes. That solid play contributed to 0-0 game against the powerful North Carolina School of Science and Math. That game is one that Young points to as a highlight of the season.

One of Yount’s big keys is sportsmanship. Win, lose or draw, Yount wants his players to be able to hold their heads high. That sportsmanship will likely help these students with the lessons they learn in life long after they leave the playing field.

At this point, it might feel like they have left the playing field since they haven’t played a game in three weeks. Due to the playoff schedule changing, it has meant that the Knights have only been able to practice. With spring break, prom and the end of the school year approaching, Yount says it’s a challenge to keep kids focused. The team has been practicing three days a week and considered attempting to schedule some additional games during the layoff but a fear of risking injury in a meaningless game just prior to the playoffs made the decision not to play easier.

The break from the field will only last a couple more days. “We hope to have a home game on Monday,” Yount said on today’s SportsTalk with George Hoyle and John C. Rose.  The Knights have yet to find out who the opposition will be but should know very soon.

Vance Charter Prepares for OSHA Vaccine Requirement Deadline

Businesses and employers of 100 or more people face a quickly approaching vaccine deadline.

The federal mandate which was on, then off, then back on again starts to take effect in a week.

The Vance Charter School board of directors met last Wednesday night in a special meeting. Board Chair Johnny Yount wrote in correspondence with WIZS News, “The Board addressed compliance with the OSHA Vaccination and Testing ETS (Emergency Temporary Standard). Given the recent rapid rise in Covid-19 cases, the Board also voted to re-impose an indoor face covering requirement for students, staff, and visitors.”

Yount said Vance Charter’s plan was to plan ahead, “to be prepared/proactive for whatever comes regarding the OSHA ETS outcome as it relates to employers with over 100 full time/part time employees,” he wrote.

As to the masks, he wrote, “The mask policy itself is voted upon each month and will be discussed and voted upon again at our January 10th meeting as required.”

If not vaccinated, an employee must be tested at least weekly.  Citations for vaccinations are not expected until at least January 10 with testing violation citations not expected for another month on February 9.

SportsTalk: Vance Charter Ladies Preparing Early For Basketball

Basketball season may be a few months away but Vance Charter Ladies Varsity Coach Brian Howard already has his team hard at work in preparation for the upcoming season.  “Off season has been pretty good.” Howard said. “We are into our off season workouts. We are averaging 10 to 12 girls a day,” Howard continued.  Howard characterizes that as a huge turnout.

The groundwork for the upcoming season was laid out at the end of last season. Howard told his team, “If you want to play on this team you have to do off-season workouts.” During these workouts Howard and his staff are tracking every piece of data possible such as made shots, made three throws and made three point shots in an effort to improve on last year’s 7-3 record. According to Howard the result of tracking these data sets will be having the right people in the program and the right people in the right spots on the floor when the season begins.

Coach Howard says he expects the Lady Knights to be better prepared and in better shape due to the off-season workouts. It’s also giving him and his staff the opportunity to install new and improved offensive and defensive schemes. Howard feels that this will put Vance Charter’s program ahead of many others. His team will feature four seniors and he singled out rising freshman Amber Reavis as someone the team will rely on heavily.

Last year’s 7-3 season ended with a 44-33 loss at the hands of Gates County in the state playoffs, but this year will find Vance Charter in a new conference. Howard says the new conference will be interesting. Meanwhile, the Lady Knights have two more weeks of workouts to get through.

Season Starting Fast For Vance Charter Lady Knights Basketball

When a sports team plays 30 games and only loses two, that’s something to be celebrated.  That was the case last year for the Vance Charter School Lady Knights basketball team.  But the celebration must end when the next season begins, and for the Lady Knights and Head Coach Brian Howard, that time has come.

With the first game of the season right after the start of the new year, and with needing to overcome the mental and physical effects covid has had so far on everyone, a week’s worth of preparation and mindset will have to do.

Coach Howard joined SportsTalk host Trey Snide (click below to listen) on WIZS Tuesday at 1 p.m., along with co-host Ron Noel, and Howard said for the first game “I just want to see a lot of hunger. I think at times they still harking back to going 28-2 last year and not realizing, ok, we’re 0-0 again.  We have to do this whole process over.  And so I just want to see a lot of aggression and a lot of hunger from my team.  That’s all I can ask for for the first game.

That’s how the season starts, but if you want to get to the end and have it be a banner season, then goals, mindset and more plays a factor.

Howard said, “It’s just the fact that I didn’t know how everybody was going to adjust to wearing the mask during practice. And so before practice started I just went ahead and I told them…This is what is expected of us this year, and I’ve seen it can be done because I’ve seen other schools do it.  And I said and those other schools I’ve seen do it, they don’t have the caliber athletes that we have in his gym right now. So we’ll make the best of the situation, and we’re going to go out here and we’re going to perform to the best of our abilities because at the end of the season whoever wins the conference is still going to get a trophy. And I want the trophy. And so just adjust your mindset now to…this is a covid season or whatever you want to call it. Just get rid of that mindset and just understand that at the end of the day, we still have to go out and perform at the best of our abilities. Everybody else is in the same boat. Everybody’s doing the same things that we have to do, so there’s no room for complaining or any excuses that need to be made.

Vance Charter Over OPS 8-4

— submitted by Tommy Anstead, OPS softball coach

Oxford Prep Griffins lost 8-4 to Vance Charter. The Griffins out hit Charter 10 – 9 over 7 innings. We stranded multiple runners on base. Overall it was a hard fought ball game. We feel very confident about the rest of the season. Oxford Prep never gave up, plating runs in the bottom of the 7th.

Vance Charter Over OPS 4-0 (3-22-18)

— submitted by OPS Softball Coach Tommy Anstead

Oxford Prep went down to Vance Charter 4 – 0 Thursday. It was pretty much a pitcher’s duel. Charter got their first runs on errors, that’s all it took. Jordan Dunn pitched another great game and Jordan Jones had a crushing double, the only bright spot in the hitting game for Oxford Prep. Over all it was a very good game.
