UNC Football Retains the Victory Bell After Emotional Double Overtime Victory 47-45

The Victory Bell remains in Chapel Hill after an emotional battle between the North Carolina Tar Heels and long-time rival Duke Blue Devils called for double overtime. UNC quarterback Drake Maye completed 28 passes for 342 yards and one touchdown. Maye also ran 12 times for 22 yards, including a rushing touchdown.

“I saw Drake Maye do some things tonight, that were just unbelievable,” said UNC head coach Mack Brown. “He made play after play after play, including the two-point play that normal people just don’t make.”

Through the air, Maye looked poised in the pocket, dispersing the ball to seven offensive playmakers. One of Maye’s top targets, wide receiver Tez Walker, reeled in seven passes for 162 yards.

UNC’s ground attack was equally successful. Tar Heel running back Omarian Hampton demonstrated elusiveness and explosive speed, carrying the ball 31 times for 169 yards.

UNC wasted no time putting points on the board. Their first offensive drive consisted of 10 plays, which accumulated 75 yards. During that drive, Maye connected with Walker for a 43-yard completion before rushing into the end zone for a one-yard score.

After UNC’s defensive unit limited Duke to four yards, Maye led a fast-paced offensive attack, advancing the 67 yards in 3:51 to set up a 31-yard field goal.

Towards the beginning of the second quarter, Duke, down by 10, found its footing and marched 70 yards for a touchdown to shrink UNC’s lead to six. However, for most of the first half, UNC was dominating in total yards and success through the air.

On the ensuing possession, the Blue Devils took advantage of UNC’s poor field position by forcing an interception to set up a scoring opportunity at the UNC 14. A few plays later, Duke quarterback Grayson Loftis rushed three yards into the end zone to give his team its first lead of the night.

UNC’s last drive of the first half resulted in a 25-yard field goal to reclaim the lead.

After Duke failed to gain a yard on its first drive of the second half, UNC went 55 yards to set up a 27-yard field goal and extend its lead to six.

Throughout the third quarter, The Tar Heel defense stunned the Blue Devils, limiting them to 16 yards of total offense and forcing multiple punts. With the clock winding down at the end of the third quarter, UNC’s offense found themselves in an excellent scoring position. Then, at the top of the fourth quarter, Hampton plowed his way into the end zone, building a comfortable 12-point lead.

Duke’s offense bounced back in the fourth quarter, outscoring UNC 22-10. After scoring three touchdowns, Duke managed to take the lead with 41 seconds left in the game. However, that lead was brief because UNC kicker Noah Burnette booted the ball 43 yards through the end zone to tie the game up at 36-36.

Duke received the ball to start the first period of overtime. With minimal success, they had to settle for a 49-yard field goal. The Tar Heels responded with another Burnette field goal to force a second overtime.

On UNC’s second possession in overtime, Maye rushed five yards into the end zone and completed a two-point conversion. Duke, down by eight, responded with a touchdown after Loftis hit wide receiver Jordan Moore in stride. Unfortunately for Duke, the two-point try was unsuccessful as the ball fell incomplete. Tar Heel fans immediately stormed the field to celebrate the hard-earned victory.

“What a game,” said Brown. “It was fun to coach. It was fun to watch and both teams competed.”

UNC Football Outplayed Syracuse to Remain Undefeated

An impressive display of consistent explosive runs on offense and strong tackles on defense from the North Carolina Tar Heels (UNC) paved the way for an impressive 40-7 win over Syracuse.

On offense, UNC quarterback Drake Maye completed 33 passes for 442 yards. He connected with 11 receivers, including Devontez Walker, who caught six passes for 43 yards in his debut for UNC. After weeks of backlash, the NCAA reversed course and granted Walker, the two-time transfer, immediate eligibility a few days before the game. As Walker led his team onto the field before kickoff, cheers erupted throughout the stadium.

“I just felt blessed to be out there, said Walker. My teammates have been in my corner since I arrived.”

UNC’s potent offense started strong, executing 14 plays for 64 yards. Through a dynamic ground game, UNC quickly reached the red zone. However, the drive stalled out 11 yards outside of the end zone. Then kicker Noah Burnette made a 29-yard field goal to give UNC an early lead.

Throughout the remainder of the first half, Maye had plenty of options on offense. He distributed the ball to numerous playmakers to score three consecutive touchdowns.

“North Carolina is a fantastic football team, and I tip my hat to Mack Brown, said Syracuse head coach Dino Babers. Today, they were fantastic on offense, fantastic on defense, and I think they’re going to go a long way this season.”

In contrast, Syracuse’s run-heavy offensive unit struggled to build momentum against UNC’s aggressive defense. Therefore, the unit had to punt the ball away on all four of its first-half possessions.

Although Syracuse demonstrated offensive efficiency at the start of the second half by scoring on its first possession, the momentum quickly dissipated with no room to run.

UNC’s defense, led by linebacker Cedric Gray, defensive back Don Chapman, and defensive lineman Myles Murphy, intercepted two passes and amassed 51 total tackles, one sack, and three TFLs.

UNC Executes Fourth-Quarter Comeback to Defeat Duke 38-35

Tens of thousands of energized football fans in the vicinity of The Triangle gathered at Wallace Wade Stadium on Oct. 15 to witness the annual Duke-UNC clash. While the game remained close for much of the game, and both teams exchanged the lead multiple times, the resiliency displayed by a Drake Maye-led offense late in the fourth quarter propelled UNC to victory.

In a game of inches, UNC’s offense took advantage of multiple miscues by Duke’s offense late in the fourth quarter. A chop-block penalty eliminated a 15-yard touchdown catch by Duke receiver Jalon Calhoun. Then Duke kicker Charlie Ham missed a 45-yard field goal, and UNC’s offense took over with 2:09 on the clock.

Maye stepped up when it mattered. His 74-yard game-winning drive lasted nine plays, and it took less than two minutes to reach the end zone. The final drive yielded an 8-yard touchdown catch by wide receiver Antoine Green. Maye threw for a career-high 380 yards and rushed for 70 more.

Although UNC’s offense flourished at times, we must not discredit the work of Duke’s stout defensive front. The unit recovered two fumbles, deflected two passes, and applied continuous pressure to force Maye outside the pocket. Duke’s strong defensive effort, led by junior captain DeWayne Carter, amassed three sacks and four tackles for a loss.

Despite an unfavorable result, Duke’s offense advanced the ball efficiently. Quarterback Riley Leonard accumulated 245 yards through the air and earned an additional 130 yards with his legs. Leonard’s exciting 74-yard touchdown run in the second quarter helped to secure a Blue Devils lead at the half.

“I told our kids: I couldn’t be more proud with the way we battled,” first-year coach Mike Elko said.

UNC extended its series win streak to four to keep possession of the Victory Bell. With a win Saturday night, UNC is also the front-runner in the Coastal Division.

Angel said it’s pretty impressive to see this rapid level of growth from last year to this year.  “The steps forward that Carolina has taken are really really impressive.  National Signing Day is next week.  Carolina expects to bring in a top-15 national recruiting class.  It’ll be one of their best ones ever,” he said.

The momentum is there.  The process is occurring for UNC.

Angell said, “You can really put an exclamation point on it here with a win here Saturday because I think it’s a win that would give you some national attention.”
