Vance County Board of Education Approves School Consolidations

— The Following is a Press Release from Vance County Schools:

The Vance County Board of Education approved at its March 19 meeting a plan to combine the middle schools and the high schools for the 2018-2019 school year.

With the board’s action, Eaton-Johnson and Henderson middle schools will be combined and serve middle school students in the facility currently housing Northern Vance High School and Northern Vance and Southern Vance high schools will be combined to serve high school students in the facility currently housing Southern Vance High School next school year.

In January, members of the Board of Education directed the superintendent and school system staff members to seek community input on a potential facilities consolidation plan for the current, traditional middle and high schools. Discussion of consolidation became necessary as the result of several years of declining student enrollment across the district and the need to improve the efficiency and financial sustainability of school operations.

Since early January, over 25 meetings have been held with community stakeholders to seek input on the feasibility of combining the schools and their programs. School officials have heard from over 500 people in the local community with their attendance at community conversations, through email responses and an online survey with school system employees.

The feedback received during community meetings has been extremely informative as to what the public expects from its public schools and their services and programs for students. The majority of the feedback from parents, students, school system employees, elected officials, business leaders and local residents has been in favor of combining the schools.

The board is expected to review and approve a detailed implementation plan to accomplish combining the schools at its April meeting.

To address the concerns voiced during the community meetings about school safety, an ad hoc committee from the local community will be established to develop recommendations for board consideration.

“I am pleased with the board’s decision tonight and applaud them for their courage and willingness to do what’s right for students,” Superintendent Anthony D. Jackson said. “We have lots to do. Exciting times and great things are ahead.”

Vance Medical Academy Holds Nurse Aide Pinning Ceremony

The Vance Medical Academy at Southern Vance High School held its annual Nurse Aide Pinning Ceremony on June 1, in the school’s gymnasium.

Melodie Kernahan, a registered nurse and the instructor for the Vance Medical Academy students, led the recognitions.

A total of 19 nursing aide training graduates were recognized.

They include: Jakayla Boyd, Itzy Contreras, Yasmene Clark, Alyssa Dickerson, Raven Dunston, Chermella Durham, Dalton Elliott, Cynthia Harrington, Anna Hernandez, Krystal Jones, Kyanna Kersey, Alexis Lowery, Vianey Nonato, Jaslin Renteria, Litzy Renteria, Onjahlaya Robinson, Yarelic Picaz, Dyshaqual Trowbridge and Morgan Yarborough.

Kernahan presented each graduate with a nursing aide pin, certificate of completion and a single red rose.

Vianey Nonato received a different pin for her successful completion of requirements to become a certified nursing aide (CNA 1).

The graduates also received recognition for each completing over 270 hours of training and the distinction of graduating from an accredited program. Each nursing aide graduate trained extensively in the classroom and in local nursing home facilities.

SVHS Student selected for IFAL

Kimberly Rice, a junior at Southern Vance High School, has been selected to participate in the Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders (IFAL) at N.C. A&T State University from June 11 through June 16.

The IFAL program is a one-week residential program designed for rising high school seniors sponsored through the N.C. Farm Bureau.

While attending the institute, students are exposed to the academic and research programs in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences and are familiarized with careers in the food, agricultural and environmental sciences.

Southern Vance High School Announces Graduation Marshals

A total of 17 juniors, who make up the top 10 percent of their class this year at Southern Vance High School, have been selected as graduation marshals for the Class of 2017.

The top juniors were honored today at a reception held at the school and attended by their parents and school officials.

Those students selected as Southern Vance graduation marshals include: Kailee Ball, Itzy Chavarin, Cody Edwards, Adriana Evans, Cynthia Hernandez, Walter Hernandez, Perla Lopez, Brandon Loyd, Crystal Marrow, Ashley Mosley, Litzy Rentera, Onjahlaya Robinson, Karen Sandoval, Keyunia Smith, Kaitlyn Tant, Destiny Williams and Aliyah Wright.

They are shown in the accompanying photo, with the exception of Cynthia Hernandez, Brandon Loyd and Aliyah Wright who were unavailable for the photo.

Southern Vance Symphonic Band rated “Excellent”

The Southern Vance High School Symphonic Band earned an “Excellent” rating during competition at the Music Performance Adjudication (MPA) for North Carolina in late March.

The band attended the stringent high school band judging process at Apex Friendship School in Apex.

This is the first time a band from Vance County has earned an “Excellent” rating in the MPA. The rating is the second highest possible rating, behind the “Superior” rating.

The Southern Vance bands are under the direction of Michael Lewis.

Southern Vance Names Darry Ragland as Head Football Coach

When Southern Vance High School’s new head football coach takes the sidelines this fall, it will be a familiar face for Raider fans.

Southern Vance has announced that their new head football coach will be Darry Ragland. The announcement serves as a homecoming of sorts for the Raiders as Ragland previously served as an assistant coach at Southern Vance for 14 seasons from 1999 to 2012. He coached wide receivers and was the offensive coordinator under former head coaches Mark Perry and David Jennings. Ragland was also offensive coordinator under outgoing head coach Lewis Young in 2012 before leaving to become the Assistant Head Coach at Northern Vance from 2013-2016.

Ragland served as offensive coordinator for the Raiders in 2006 when Southern Vance lost in the NCHSAA 2AA State Championship game to Shelby, 27-24. He specializes in a variety of offensive systems and will bring a new look to the Raiders this fall.

“We took our time and did our due diligence while searching for our next head football coach.” Athletic Director Joe Sharrow said of the coaching search. “ We ultimately believed that bringing Coach Ragland home to a place that he loves and is familiar with is what we needed at this time. He knows our kids, he knows our school, and I am confident that he knows what it takes to be successful here.”

Ragland will replace Lewis Young, who resigned in November after finishing his career with a 14-43 record. This will be Ragland’s first opportunity as a head coach and he has prioritized returning the Raiders to the type of success that was achieved while he was an assistant coach at Southern Vance.

“Southern Vance has a strong football tradition that I am proud to have been a part of and would like to bring back,” said Ragland in a statement. “I am grateful to have the opportunity to come home and lead the Raiders back to what we once were. I would like to thank (Principal) Rey Horner and (Athletic Director) Joe Sharrow for the trust they have bestowed upon me. Those two have created an incredibly supportive atmosphere here that I am excited to be a part of.”

Southern Vance will open the 2017 football season at home against Bartlett Yancey High School.

SVHS Students Earn National Certifications

Seven masonry students at Southern Vance High School have earned two national certifications that make them eligible for employment upon their graduation.

Ben Arrington is the students’ masonry teacher at Southern Vance.

All of the students met the standards required for certification in both the Core Curriculum and Green Environment areas through the National Center for Construction Education Research (NCCER).

The students are shown in the photo holding their certificates and are joined by Arrington, far left, and Southern Vance Principal Rey Horner, far right. The students include, from left, Chelsea Galindo, Christopher Stevenson, Jackson Royster, Jose Gonzalez, Sherrod Carter and Tyler Bondurant. Lewis Young Resigns as Coach of Southern Vance Football

Lewis Young, the Head Varsity Football Coach at Southern Vance High School, announced his resignation on Monday, November 7, 2016. He has resigned only as the Head Varsity Football Coach and will continue teaching at Southern Vance High School.

Coach Young has served the Raider Football program for over 20 years in various roles, most recently as Head Varsity Football Coach from 2012-2016. He finished with a 14-43 record and made two appearances in the NCHSAA playoffs (2012, 2013) including a 12-6 upset victory over #2-seeded South Columbus in 2013. Prior to being Head Coach, Coach Young served as the Defensive Coordinator under Mark Perry and David Jennings and led the defense for the 2006 Southern Vance team that lost 27-24 to Shelby in the NCHSAA 2AA State Championship game.

Coach Young is a well-respected and important member of the Southern Vance family who has positively impacted the lives of a countless number of our student-athletes . We will miss his dedication and loyalty to Southern Vance football and thank him for his service to our school and community.
