The Local Skinny! With Summer Programming A Big Success, Perry Memorial Library Staff Prepare For Fall

Fresh off a jam-packed summer program, Melody Peters sums up the seven-week period filled with theater troupes, music, birds of prey and – of course – reading in just a few words: “Whew! it was a whirlwind!”

But a whirlwind in the best ways possible, said Peters, Youth Services Librarian at Perry Memorial Library.

More than 2,500 people attended 67 – 67! – different programs. In addition, 167 participants in the summer reading program got weekly prizes in exchange for turning in reading logs.

“It was just a fantastic summer reading program,” Peters said on Tuesday’s segment of The Local Skinny! “I am thrilled with the turnout, with the new families, with the old families…just a really great program.”

And while August is a time when Peters and the library staff can take a short rest before the fall programming begins, they’re not ones to be idle. “We’re still moving behind the scenes,” she said.

There may be some quality vacation time between now and Labor Day, but the library remains open and Peters said library representatives go to many of the area back-to-school events and open houses before the new school year begins later in the month.

And then there’s putting the finishing touches on planning for the fall programming – this is the time of year that Peters and others on the staff look at the last quarter of the year – December will be here before you know it!

Warren Library Summer Reading Program Kicks Off June 11 – Let “The Adventure” Begin!

Participants of all ages are invited to Warren County Memorial Library for this year’s Summer Reading Program – “Adventure Begins at Your Library.” Starting with the opening of registration at 10 a.m. on June 11 and ending with the finale and prize drawing on July 31 at 12 noon, “Adventure Begins at Your Library” will feature myriad programs, activities and fun for the whole family.

As the school year draws to a close, library staff wants to make sure all Warren County students keep reading to avoid the summer slump.

But who says that a reading event can’t be exciting?

In addition to the literacy-building essentials, participants will also get to experience live animals, music, performances, competitive events, crafts, movies, board games, video games and more. All programs are free and open to the public.

“Our goal for this year was to have inclusive and enriching events that people of all ages – from 1 to 100 – can enjoy,” said Library Director Tanika Alston.

Warren County Schools will provide lunch to all school-aged children at the library on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12 noon to 2 p.m.  The Summer Meal Program will run from June 11 until July 30, taking a break during the week of July 4.

“We would like to encourage all of Warren County to discover the adventure that awaits them at our library,” said Summer Reading Coordinator Ky’el Owens.

The fun kicks off at 10 a.m. on June 11 when community organizations will be at the library to share information and materials until 2 p.m.. Library staff will host “All Day Fun and Games” that will include a variety of activities – everything from board games  and air hockey – until 4:30 p.m.

Registration begins on June 11, but continues throughout the summer. Everyone who signs up is automatically entered to win Summer Reading prizes. The prize drawing will be held during the Finale event at noon on July 31.

The Summer Reading Kick-Off Celebration, featuring “the amazing, out-of-this-world teacher” Steve Somers, will be held Saturday, June 15 at 12 p.m.

Summer Youth Programs 

Totally Tweens – Ages 8 – 12 – Mondays at 5 p.m.

Dungeons & Dragons – Ages 13-18 – Tuesdays at 4 p.m.

Story Explorers – Ages 5 – 11 – Tuesdays at 5 p.m.

STEAMworks – Ages 10-14 – Wednesdays at 5 p.m.

Books & Babies – Ages Birth – 2 – Thursdays at 10:45 a.m.

Mother Goose Storytime – Ages 2 – 5 – Thursdays at 11 a.m.

LEGO Fun Club – Ages 5 – 13 – Thursdays at 4 p.m.
