Dr. Stan Winborne New Superintendent of Granville County Public Schools

The Granville County Board of Education has named Dr. Stan Winborne as the new superintendent of Granville County Public Schools, effective July 1. Winborne will succeed Dr. Alisa McLean, who is retiring after 30 years as an educator in North Carolina.

“I am honored and humbled by our Board of Education’s decision to name me as their next Superintendent.,” Winborne said in a press release. “I have tremendous respect for Dr. McLean and her excellent leadership and service to the children of our district. I wish her nothing but the best in her retirement and look forward to working with our board and amazing educators to build upon the successes during her tenure. I believe GCPS is poised to do great things and prepare our students to thrive in a changing world!”

Winborne currently serves as Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and Student Services for Granville County Public Schools. He has held numerous roles in the district, including Assistant Superintendent and Executive Director of Operations and Human Resources as well as Director of Secondary Schools & Career and Technical Education. He also has been the GCPS public information officer for the past 13 years.

In 1996, Winborne began his year career in education with Granville County Public Schools as its first and only English as a Second Language teacher. He was a teacher for 10 years before moving into administration.

As a graduate from Tulane University, Dr. Winborne earned a Bachelor of Arts dual degree in Spanish and International Relations. He received his Master’s degree in Language Education from Indiana University, an Education Specialist degree from George Washington University, and his Doctorate in Educational Administration and Supervision from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.

540 Graduate from Granville County Public Schools earning 9.6 Million in Scholarships

The 2017 graduates of Granville County Public schools participated in the final ceremonies this past Saturday under beautiful blue skies and a warm spring breeze. More than 540 students graduated from our five high schools, with thousands of supportive parents, relatives, friends and community members on hand to help celebrate the special milestone in a young person’s life.

This year’s graduating class was a particularly talented group, as evidenced by both the statistics and individual stories of success. This class of students earned more than $9.6 million dollars worth of scholarships – an all time record since the district has been tracking this information. More than 450, or 85% of the graduates were accepted into and plan to attend a 2 or 4 year college or university or proudly pledged to enroll in the armed services, and 10% had already secured employment. Several students were accepted to prestigious universities, as well as every single UNC institution of higher education.

Many student athletes were awarded substantial scholarships in various sports, including track, volleyball, softball, and even bowling! Other students received large academic scholarships, including ‘full-rides’ to NCSU, UNCG, Wingate, Peace and Winston-Salem. Future plans of the graduates span the entire spectrum, including students entering the fields of engineering, pre-med, Biochemistry, and Business. Others made plans for careers nursing, radiology, veterinary science, and agriculture. Several students will begin pursuing degrees in welding, with job offers already on the table. Other outliers include pilot’s school, cosmetology, and flight attendant’s school.

Regardless of the immediate next steps in these graduates’ plans, it is clear that Granville County Public Schools has helped prepare this talented group of young citizens for whatever lies ahead. Our community should be extremely proud of them, and feel confident that the next generation of citizens and community members will be well represented.

GCPS School Board Seeks Public Input on Superintendent Search

The Granville County Board of Education has hired the North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA) to help facilitate its search for the next Superintendent of Granville County Public Schools (GCPS). To that end, the board is seeking direct input from interested members of the staff and community to help shape the search process and assist in defining the qualities and characteristics of the next GCPS superintendent.

The board invites parents and community members to participate in a short community survey that can be accessed and completed online by clicking the survey link on the main GCPS webpage: https://www.gcs.k12.nc.us/. All surveys must be completed by Monday, March 27, 2017 with results to be compiled, summarized, and presented by NCSBA at the regular board meeting on April 3, 2017.

In addition, all employees of GCPS will have an opportunity to complete a separate online staff survey. Details about completing the employee version of the search survey will be communicated via school system email.

Citizens may also sign up to address the board during the public comment period at any of the upcoming regular board meetings, scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on March 6 and April 3. All meetings will be held in the main board room at the GCPS Administrative Offices, located at 101 Delacroix Street, Oxford, NC. Citizens must sign up to speak before the meeting begins and must otherwise comply with board policy.

In addition to input received from the surveys and public comment, written statements from any local groups or organizations may be submitted to Allison Schafer via mail at NCSBA, P.O. Box 97877, Raleigh, NC 27624, via email at aschafer@ncsba.org, or via fax at 919-841-4020. These statements should be received no later than Monday, March 27, 2017.
