Two gifts totaling $20,000 from Greenville, NC based Union Bank, to The Salvation Army of Henderson (serving Vance, Granville, Franklin, Northampton, Halifax and Warren Counties) will provide much-needed help and hope to Granville and Franklin County families and individuals impacted by COVID-19. The donations are earmarked to provide food and meal assistance to children and families impacted by the pandemic.

“On behalf of our Union Bank family, we are proud to offer a measure of relief during this unprecedented time,” said Rob Jones, CEO of Union Bank.  “One of our core values is to make a difference in our communities. This contribution recognizes the challenges that individuals and families in our markets currently face. I am especially proud to say that this gift includes contributions from Union Bank, members of our Board of Directors and personal contributions from Executive Management.”

Annually, The Salvation Army serves thousands of people in the six-county service area through programs that provide food and meals, shelter, clothing, disaster relief, rent and utilities assistance and Christmas gifts for needy children and seniors.

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed major financial setbacks for North Carolina residents and The Salvation Army has received an influx of requests for assistance.

“COVID-19 continues to bring challenges for many people,” said Lieutenant Derrick Smith of The Salvation Army of Henderson. “The need for Salvation Army social service programming is essential in our community. This gift from Union Bank will strengthen our feeding programs to help people facing financial difficulties at this time.”

Salvation Army’s Lt. Smith Talks ‘Phenomenal’ Grand Opening of New Building

100.1 FM / 1450 AM WIZS; Local News broadcasts M-F 8am, 12pm, 5pm

Lt. Derrick Smith, with the Vance County Salvation Army, and Henderson Mayor Eddie Ellington were on Monday’s edition of WIZS’ Town Talk program to discuss the grand opening of the new Salvation Army building.

Located at 2292 Ross Mill Road in Henderson, the new location held a two-part grand opening event on Sunday, November 10. According to Smith, the 11 a.m. church worship service was attended by approximately 175 community members and leaders.

“It was a phenomenal day; the weather was beautiful,” Smith said. “It was exciting to have so many from our community and to have the support of the community all in one place, at one time.”

At a separate 3 p.m. service, Smith and his wife Lt. Odessa Smith welcomed guests for a ribbon-cutting and official grand opening celebration.

Ellington, who was in attendance, echoed Smith’s assessment on the celebratory mood of the event and said many citizens are likely unaware of the impact the Salvation Army has on the community.

“The mission of the Salvation Army throughout the world and our community speaks volumes. A lot of people don’t know the impact the organization has right here in Henderson and Vance County,” Ellington stated.

Also present for the occasion were former Salvation Army Captain Rick Langley and wife Angie, who headed the local operation from 2012 until their retirement in June 2019. Smith said the event was special for the Langleys because they saw the new building through from concept to completion.

“They are really good folks,” said Smith. “They were here for about seven years, so to follow behind them makes our job easier.”

With the grand opening, the Salvation Army is now fully operational in the Ross Mill Road location. Smith said the first order of business will be to focus on Christmas efforts, such as the annual red kettle campaign that begins Friday, November 15.

The Salvation Army also operates its new store – located at 218 Raleigh Road in Henderson – while maintaining the former store – located at 222 W. Montgomery Street – for storage and organization purposes.

The completion of the new location and planned ball fields on the 40-acre lot located near Mako Medical Laboratories and Vance Charter School will allow the Smiths to focus on what previous studies have indicated is a big need for the community – youth services.

In a prior interview with WIZS, Odessa Smith said, “One of the biggest needs is youth development. We would like to have after-school programs, mentoring programs and partnerships with local schools and other community organizations.”

While the Salvation Army will continue to work with community partners to expand services, Smith said the mission of the organization is strong and already established.

“This is a building for the community,” said Smith. “It will help us in our mission to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.”

Completion Date Nears for New 40-Acre Salvation Army Center

The Salvation Army’s Captain Rick Langley was on Wednesday’s edition of WIZS’ Town Talk program to provide updates on the organization’s new facility currently under construction on Ross Mill Road in Henderson.

With a focus on serving youth in the five-county area, the facility will be located on a 40-acre lot near Mako Medical Laboratories and Vance Charter School. According to Langley, completion is expected by October of this year with outside work being finalized over the next two weeks.

To emphasize the religious aspect of the organization, the building will feature more traditional church aesthetics. “The new building will have stain glass windows and a cross to make it look more church-like than institutional-like,” said Langley.

In a previous interview with WIZS, Langley stated that the facility will include a community center, gym, full-size commercial kitchen and two ball fields – baseball and soccer. A variety of programs will be provided including band lessons, drama classes, cooking lessons and Christian dance classes.

In addition to hosting Salvation Army-related games, the ballfields will double as the home field of the neighboring Vance Charter School Knights.

“I think it will be a great partnership with Vance Charter School,” said Langley. “They are a wonderful school and we look forward to sharing the facility and learning from their students, teachers and mentors.”

While construction is underway on the new building, the Salvation Army will continue to operate from its 355 Alexander Avenue location in Henderson. According to Langley, the Alexander Avenue property was recently sold to Tiff McCarter with “The City Ministries” based out of Durham, NC, and the two Christian-based organizations currently share the facility per their agreement.

In addition to the planning of a new facility, Langley has also been busy with the new Salvation Army Store located on Raleigh Road across from Supply Line in Henderson.

“The new store is doing better and better each week,” Langley reported. “People are starting to find out about us and discover some of the great deals we have. We get an unbelievable amount of stuff from Henderson and are able to sell it at very discounted prices. You can find some good deals and treasures if you’re there at the right time.”

With a large variety of items including clothing (some name brand), pictures, wall décor, vases, rugs, appliances and plenty of knickknacks, Langley said the store is a must-see.

According to Langley, the previous Salvation Army Store located at 222 W. Montgomery Street in downtown Henderson is currently used for storage and for the baling and sell of old rags at a price of 15 cents per pound.

“Our original intention was to open two stores, be we just couldn’t work that out,” explained Langley.

While Langley is proud of all the work he and wife Angie have put into the organization since being relocated to Henderson from South Carolina in 2012, he announced that the duo will be retiring in mid-June to Greenville to spend more time with family and grandchildren.

When asked to describe his experience working with his wife, Langley responded, “It has been wonderful. She’s the brains of the outfit for sure. She’s a go-getter and has done a lot for this community and its people.”

While leaving the area is bittersweet for Langley, he has faith in the Salvation Army’s new husband-and-wife team taking the helm, Derrick and Odessa Smith. “The Smiths are a wonderful couple transferring from Burlington,” said Langley. They are going to be program-minded and wide open. The community is really going to love them, I promise you that.”

New Salvation Army Facility to Focus on Local Youth

The Salvation Army is in the planning phase of building a new facility on Ross Mill Road in Henderson with a focus on serving youth in the five-county area.

The facility will be located on a 40-acre lot near the new Mako Medical Laboratories facility and new Vance Charter School location.

Captain Rick Langley with the Salvation Army, who was recently on air, said a sizeable trust is allowing this dream to become a reality.

“My wife and I came to this area from South Carolina in 2012,” said Langley. “Thanks to a sizeable trust that the Salvation Army received, things have been topsy-turvy in a positive way since then. It has allowed for a lot of growth.”

With architects finalizing building plans now, the goal is to break ground this June with completion expected by summer 2019.

The facility will include a community center, gym, full-size commercial kitchen and two ball fields – baseball and soccer. “The ball fields will help youth become more involved in sports and can be used as a playing field for Vance Charter School’s home games,” said Langley.

According to Langley, the facility will also offer band lessons, drama classes, cooking lessons and Christian dance classes.

To help meet the transportation needs of those interested in using the facility, the Salvation Army has already purchased a 12-passenger van and a bus with the option to purchase up to five additional buses if the need arises.

With a focus on providing youth with fun, productive activities, the organization’s goal is to provide better options than turning to a life of crime. “We can give options,” Langley said. “The options they have now are to join a gang or do nothing. We want to give them the option to do something productive like playing an instrument or play baseball.”

While the Salvation Army is low on volunteer opportunities at the moment, plenty of volunteers will be needed when the new facility opens next year. “Lots of volunteers will be needed when the building is completed,” said Langley. “We’ll need coaches, mentors, umpires, refs and plenty more.”

Langley is certain that the new facility will uphold the Salvation Army’s mission to “preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs without discrimination.”
