Twenty-four second through sixth graders participated in Rebuilding Hope’s Kids’ Construction Camp August 5 – 7, 2019.

Campers rotated through six stations: Hammer & Nails, Masonry, Electrical & Plumbing, Roofing & Shingles, Bible Study and Take-Home Project.

“So many people in our communities have construction skills, and they’re generous with their time and help with the camp,” says RHI coordinator Randolph Wilson.

“While campers rotate through areas of construction, we want them to be aware of how they are building their lives.”

This year’s project was building a wooden tray and we were in collaborating with picplumbing.com to help us with teaching the kids various tips and tricks. Each camper also took home a tool apron, goggles, a tape measure and carpenter’s pencil.

At the end of camp, participants received certificates of completion.

In his 10 years as a Rebuilding Hope volunteer, Steve Cannon has seen a lot of wheelchair ramps and rooftops, but the “divine appointments” stand out.

“I was a fulltime volunteer for six years, serving as the construction coordinator,” Steve says.

“I had the opportunity to visit with homeowners and their families when doing job assessments. This time was always special. These were divine appointments.”

Steve says he “experienced hurting people looking for answers and hope. I got the opportunity to pray with them and present the Gospel.

What was really special was experiencing the power of the Gospel. People putting their faith in Jesus. Seeing their hopelessness turn to hope.”

The Pickens, S.C., native volunteered after hearing a presentation about RHI’s mission and ministry.

After he retired from the North Carolina Forest Service in 2009 with 30 years of service, Steve says, “God called me to get involved in the ministry and the opportunity it gave to introduce our community to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.”

Moving into a part-time role, Steve serves where he’s needed – at the warehouse or during outreach events, such as SOS D-Now and Kids’ Construction Camp.

“I encourage others to volunteer,” says the outreach pastor at New Sandy Creek Baptist Church. “God uses you to bless others, but God also blesses you through His work. Most of the time I felt like I got the biggest blessing.”

In other activities, Steve has worked with Embrace Henderson in its outreach events and Joy Club in the public schools.

Steve and wife Ann have been married nearly 33 years and have two daughters.

In his leisure time, Steve says he enjoys hiking and hunting.

“One of the stations in the camp is Bible study. Last year the theme of the study was ‘What Type of Reputation Are You Building?’”

At camp’s end participants are given certificates of completion.

Laytons Named Rebuilding Hope’s July Spotlight Volunteers

While most RHI volunteers live nearby, Billy and Ann Layton travel a bit to serve the ministry. The Laytons drive 38 miles once a week to Henderson from their home in Nashville, N.C. While in Henderson, the couple stays in their travel trailer snuggled in a back corner at RHI.

No strangers to travel, the couple for a number of years worked as site coordinators for North Carolina Baptist Men in rebuilding homes after hurricanes and other disasters.

The Laytons got to know RHI founders Randolph and Gail Wilson through business connections and NCBM relief work.

Billy attended his first NCBM training in 1992, he says, and took several relief trips.

“In 2005, God spoke to me, and I began to get involved with NCBM again,” says Billy, who in 2012 closed his 25-year-old mobile home service business. Prior to his appointment as a rebuild site coordinator in 2011, trips to disaster areas found him taking care of equipment and coordinating shower and laundry operations.

“I enjoy helping those in need,” says Billy. “Most rewarding is being able to share the gospel with others by our actions.”

Billy says his service at RHI has included helping rebuild several homes and mobile homes, distributing materials at job sites and serving as a crew chief supervisor. He’s helped build the bunk, shower and gathering areas on the second floor of the warehouse.

“The first day I came to RHI with Billy, I thought I would just be helping him with whatever building projects he worked on,” says Ann. “On my first day, Randolph showed me around. When he was showing me the office area, he was telling me who used each one.”

“He stopped at one office and said, ‘This is where the new lady will be working.’ When I looked at him he had a big grin on his face, and I realized that he was talking about me. I spend most of my time on the computer but do get to help Billy a little bit.”

RHI, the couple says, is a ministry where volunteers are welcome regardless of their skill levels.

“The only request is that they represent God in a godly way in all they do,” the Laytons say.

Billy and Ann are members of Momeyer Baptist Church in Nashville where he serves as a deacon and mission trip crew leader and assists with maintenance.

The couple has three children and three grandchildren and enjoys spending time with family at Lake Gaston.

Servants on Site Begins Seventh year of Service

SERVANTS ON SITE – SEASON 7 – SCANDALOUS GRACE

by Robert Parham

Rebuilding Hope Inc (RHI) has once again prepared for Servants on Site (SOS) to continue into its 7th year beginning this Sat., June 17th and running through Sat., June 24th.  Individual volunteers and groups from as far as Alabama will once again come together and call Crossroads Christian School in Henderson home.  For the entire history of this event, Crossroads has graciously opened its doors and allowed us to stay there and use their wonderful facilities, and we appreciate it very much.

SOS serves as a tool for churches to mobilize, equip, and disciple students and adults in an evangelistic effort to impact the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  This week will see over 200 youths, chaperons, and crew leaders combine with additional volunteers, runners, warehouse workers, feeding teams, and together, mobilize almost 300 volunteers to donate their time and resources in this unified mission.   We will attempt a total of 21 projects this year in Vance, Granville, Warren, and Mecklenburg counties.  Divided into 15 crews, we will attempt to replace nine roves and construct 12 handicapped ramps.

SOS is an annual 7-day summer mission project for youth (completed grade 6 through college) and adults to work on construction projects for homeowners in our community with immediate needs and limited resources.  Crews leave each weekday morning around 7:00 a.m. for their jobsites, work and minister to the residents and surrounding neighborhood, and at 4:00 p.m., return to the lodging facility in the afternoon for clean up and free time before dinner.  Lunches on site are provided by our sixteen “Sponsor Churches,” whose caring congregations have generously donated food, funds, adult volunteers, and worship ministers to make this annual mission a success.  These churches are of multiple denominations and are spread out through Henderson, Norlina, Oxford, and Creedmoor.

The theme for 2017 is “SCANDALOUS GRACE”, with reference to Romans 5:1-2 and many others.  Grace is God giving us something good that we do not deserve.  Jesus had a scandalous reputation among the Elite in his day for serving the not-so-desirable.  As a Christian today, are we being perceived as somewhat scandalous just for our beliefs?  “Through him we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our hope of sharing the glory of God.” Romans 5:2.  We will for this week turn our attention to glorifying God by showing his Grace through Faith, and inviting all to share in salvation through Jesus Christ.  Our continuing effort to keep the local media apprised of the efforts by so many people is simply to exhort even more churches and volunteers to join us, so that together we can continue to reach out in our communities.

Rebuilding Hope would again like to express its appreciation to everyone who has been involved with these uplifting summer mission projects over the last six years.  It is our first year working out of our new facility on Raleigh Road, and we would like to also acknowledge all the generous donations we received throughout these local communities that made it possible.  Thank You!  Together we have made an impact in our community by sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, not only in words, but in actions.

We would also like to express our appreciation to Central Baptist Church for providing their facilities for breakfast and dinner each night of the week.  Also, beginning Sunday the 18th through Friday the 23rd at 7:10 p.m., all of our teams and volunteers will gather for worship in their sanctuary located on 2574 Ruin Creek Rd. in Henderson.   We would like to invite anyone who would like to, come out and meet our mission participants, join our worship service and experience firsthand what God is doing through SERVANTS ON SITE.  Our hope for this week is that through all those involved, God’s Grace will be visible in these communities, hope replaces despair, and lives will be changed.  Thanks be to God!
