Red Cross critically needs donors after winter weather adds to severe blood shortage

RALEIGH, N.C. (Jan. 18, 2017) – Following several rounds of severe winter weather in many parts of the country, the American Red Cross urges eligible blood and platelet donors to help restock its shelves to overcome a shortage.

Since Dec. 1, about 300 blood drives across 27 states have been forced to cancel due to inclement winter weather, resulting in more than 10,500 blood and platelet donations going uncollected. Despite the weather, hospital patients still rely on transfusions.

Blood donor Jim Taylor knows how it feels to have a loved one waiting for a transfusion. His son Aaron was born with a rare liver condition. In the short two months of his life, he received 115 blood products. Taylor said each transfusion gave his family more time with Aaron, so he encourages others to give.

“When the Red Cross says there is a shortage, they are not exaggerating,” said Taylor. “I now know from experience that what they are saying is somewhere there is a father waiting on the donation that will save his son’s life. When the Red Cross asks for help, what that means is a new dad is praying for a miracle.”

Donors are encouraged to make appointments and complete the RapidPass online health history questionnaire at redcrossblood.org/rapidpass to save time when donating.

How to help

Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood donors can now save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, prior to arriving at the blood drive. Granville Crime Stoppers Looking for Help with Incidents in Oxford

SUBJECT: Breaking and Entering/Burglary/Larceny/Vandalism

On Friday, December 30th, 2016 between the hours of 1:30pm and 3:40pm an unknown person or persons unlawfully went upon private property located off Breezing Lane, Oxford, NC and forced entry of a residence, which caused criminal property damage.

On Friday, December 30th, 2016 at approximately 3:00pm an unknown person or persons unlawfully went upon private property off Clear Springs Road, Oxford, NC and forced entry of a residence, which caused criminal property damage and unlawfully removed one 18” Poulan chainsaw, one Poulan gas powered hedge trimmer, one Stanley 12-14 volt drill and impact driver set and one DeWalt tool bag with an 18 volt drill impact driver set.

On Saturday, January 14th, 2017 at approximately 2:00 pm an unknown person or persons unlawfully went upon private property off Squire Lane, Oxford, NC and forced entry of a residence, which caused criminal damage to property and unlawfully removed one old model .22 caliber revolver handgun, one 12 gauge single barrel shotgun, one .32 caliber handgun, one bone collector cross bow, 600 rounds of .22 caliber bullets, 500 .32 caliber bullets, one air wrench in a case and one whole frozen ribeye loin.

Sometime between Saturday, January 14, 2017 during late evening hours and Sunday, January 15th, 2017 mid-morning hours an unknown person or persons went upon several private properties off Hight Road located in Oxford, NC and caused criminal property damage in plowing yards with a vehicle.

Oxford Preparatory School Readies for 2017/2018 Enrollment

Applications for new 7th – 12th grade student enrollments for the 2017 – 2018 school year are available at oxfordprep.org and available in the school office. Oxford Preparatory School (OPS) is an independent and tuition-free public charter school that is designed to mold students into future leaders through completion of a rigorous curriculum while focusing on community service and developing an appreciation of the arts. OPS offers a college preparatory curriculum, a variety of competitive middle school and varsity athletic teams, and is now located in a permanent facility at 6041 Landis Rd. in Oxford.

The open enrollment period began on Monday, October 31, 2016. To be considered for a potential lottery, all applications must be turned in to the office or postmarked by Friday, February 3, 2017. If more applications are received than available seats in the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade a blind public lottery will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2017. All students choosing to attend OPS will need to confirm enrollment by completing and sending in an enrollment packet by Friday, March 10, 2017. After February 3, applications will continue to be accepted, and processed in the order they are received.

Oxford Preparatory School invites families of prospective students to learn more about the unique offerings of the school. The final of three information sessions will be held on Thursday 1/19 at 6:00. Afterwards, tours will be conducted that will allow the opportunity to meet faculty. In addition, prospective students are invited to spend time visiting the school so they can experience our unique school program firsthand. Visiting students accompany OPS student guides through their classes during a four-hour visit. It’s a chance to meet the staff and the students and to get a snapshot view of our engaging college preparatory classes. The final of three shadow days will take place on Friday 1/20 from 11:10 – 3:10. Granville County Crime Stoppers looking for robbery suspect

On Sunday, December 11th, 2016 at 9:35 pm  an unknown black male subject wearing a white mask, white gloves , a  light colored hooded jacket with black on front, light colored blue jeans,  white sneakers, and a black back pack unlawfully went upon private property of Dollar General located in the Wilton community at 2500 Highway 96 South, Franklinton, NC.  The suspect criminally vanished a handgun black in color at the clerk on duty and demanded money and the cash register drawer. The suspect placed the cash drawer with money inside his back pack and fled on foot.

Please note the additional matinee on Saturday to accommodate as many families as possible. Santa Clause will be in the lobby before each show to take pictures! The pictures and the time with Santa are free. We ask that you make a donation to the theater if you are able, but it is not required.

DA Mike Waters welcomes new Assistant District Attorney

District Attorney Mike Waters welcomes new Assistant District Attorney Nicole G. Burnette to his office as of December 1, 2016.

Ms. Burnette was born and raised in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She attended North Carolina State University on a full scholarship, where she double majored in political science and criminology. Ms. Burnette attended the University of Maryland School of Law, and graduated in May 2015, where she was honored with the Litigation and Advocacy Award, as well as the Public Interest Award. While in law school, Ms. Burnette served as a member of the trial team, an Articles Editor for the Journal of Race, Religion, Gender and Class, and served as Vice President for the Black Law Students’ Association.

Ms. Burnette resides in Creedmoor, North Carolina with her husband.

Granville Chamber accepting nominations for John Penn Award

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce’s Recognition Committee announces that the committee is accepting nominations for the 2017 John Penn Citizen of the Year Award.  This prestigious award, named for Granville County’s signer of the Declaration of Independence, is presented at the Chamber’s Annual Membership Banquet.  The 2017 event will be held Monday, January 30, in the Civic Center at Vance-Granville Community College.

Chamber members received nomination ballots attached to their issues of the Chamber’s monthly newsletter. Nomination forms may also be obtained at a Chamber office or may be downloaded from the Chamber’s website, www.granville-chamber.com.

Granville Chamber to Host 75th Annual Banquet

The Granville County Chamber’s Annual Banquet has been scheduled for Monday evening, January 30th, 6:30 pm in Vance-Granville Community College’s Main Campus Civic Center.

The evening will once again include the presentation of the Chamber’s most prestigious award, the John Penn Citizen of the Year Award, recognizing outstanding community service.  The Chamber’s Board of Directors is requesting that member businesses who are/will celebrate a significant business anniversary in 2017 notify the Chamber to be recognized – 5, 10, + years.

In celebration of 75 years, a very special program has been planned that is patriotic and indicative of the 1940’s when our Chamber was founded.  “Letters from Home – The Patriot” stars Erinn Diaz, America’s Bombshell Patriot.  This is “an exhilarating, energized, patriotic show that will have you singing, dancing, laughing, elbowing the person next to you and just bringing back amazing memories and definitely creating new ones.  Erinn Diaz’ ageless tape dancing, timeless singing and goofy interaction with the audience members will have you ‘hootin’ and a hollerin’ for a long time.’
