Residents Urged to ‘Shop Granville First’ on Small Business Saturday – Nov. 24

Now in our 4th year, the Shop Granville First event is even bigger and better than ever. What started as an idea to leverage the consumer-minded weekend and help the small, local business across Granville county has grown into an annual event. We’re excited to see just how much this program is going to benefit the business community in 2018.

“In 2017, an estimated 108 million consumers reported shopping or dining at local independently-owned businesses on Small Business Saturday — generating roughly $12 billion in reported spend.” 1

The impact that Shop Granville First has had on the greater Granville county area is significant. Participating business reported that the revenue generated on Small Business Saturday in the first 3 years is an 11% increase over past years. 2

“As shopping small catches on in communities everywhere, Small Business Saturday goes from a cause to a day of community celebration. 90% of consumers surveyed said Small Business Saturday has had a positive impact on their community.” 3

Let’s do this again, together!

Neighborhood champions, community leaders, and volunteers are working hard to prepare for the 4th Annual Shop Granville First event to take place on Saturday, November 24, 2018. The Granville County Chamber of Commerce is taking the lead on this, and will serve as headquarters for any business or consumer who wishes more information on participating. Shopping bags, instructions, coupons and more will be distributed at the Annual Thanksgiving Breakfast.

We look forward to another successful Small Business Saturday. Remember, anything you want or need, you can get in Granville County, so Shop Granville First!

Oxford Prep Students Plant Garden to Feed Community Members in Need

On a beautiful Friday afternoon, students and teachers from Oxford Preparatory School (OPS) partnered with adults from Salem United Methodist Church to begin a garden that will serve those in need in the community. A critical part of the OPS mission is to grow citizens who give back to those who live in our local community. OPS seeks to partner with those in the counties we serve to help create a more positive life for those who live around us every day.

On Friday, October 19, a group of active and focused students put in three hundred strawberry plugs in anticipation of a future harvest. Southern States in Oxford donated work gloves, fertilizer, and lime for this school project. In addition, a master gardener from the local community is eager to help organize the work and plan for ongoing maintenance and future crops.

OPS students, led by Aaron Prestrud and Thomas Venetta, joined by members of Salem UMC, led by Rev. Glenn Stallsmith, look forward to continuing to work together as we get closer to the strawberry harvest while also envisioning together what a spring planting and summertime project might entail.

‘Operation Medicine Drop’ Tomorrow at Oxford Police Dept.

Oxford Police Department will be participating in Operation Medicine Drop at the Police Department located at 204 E. McClanahan Street in Oxford on Friday, October 19 from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Operation Medicine Drop is a partnership of Safe Kids North Carolina, the Riverkeepers of North Carolina, NC State Bureau of Investigation, Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of North Carolina, and local law enforcement agencies working together to encourage the public to safely dispose of unused, unwanted, and expired medication. By providing safe and secure ways for people to get rid of unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications, Operation Medicine Drop helps prevent accidental poisonings and drug abuse while protecting our waters.

Since 2010, Operation Medicine Drop has collected nearly 89.2 million pills at more than 2000 events.

Oxford’s Finance and Public Works Committees to Meet in Joint Session

The Finance and Personnel Committees for the City of Oxford will meet in a joint session on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at 1 p.m. in the Training Room, 1st Floor, City Hall, 300 Williamsboro Street. The purpose of the meeting is to further discuss the Vacation Buy-Back and the Longevity Pay Plan. All those interested are encouraged to attend.

The Public Works, Water, & Infrastructure Committee for the Oxford Board of Commissioners will meet on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at 2 p.m. The meeting will be held in the First Floor Training Room, City Hall, 300 Williamsboro Street. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss funding options for water line projects and Kerr Lake update. All those interested are invited to attend.

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce the postponed date for the last Alive After Five event of 2018 – Thursday, October 18th – will feature the music and entertainment of JIM QUICK AND COASTLINE BAND. This very popular and well-known group of entertainers is looking forward to performing after the original date was delayed due to Hurricane Florence.

Jim Quick “is the kind of guy you genuinely want to call a friend. With the charm only a true Southerner can possess, he brings his talent to the stage with a quick-witted, knee-slapping sense of humor coupled with the clear sincerity of his love for his craft.

As a child, I was real mischievous playing pranks and makin’ jokes, doin’ stupid stuff you do as a kid. People would laugh. The more they laughed, the more I’d act a fool. It was like applause for more, more, more. I loved being the center of attention. Still do. Add music and, well, that’s spice to the concoction! That’s how I roll.”

And, “roll” he does. Quick’s been touring the Southeast US for more than 20 years, playing nearly 250+ shows per year, and has released more than 11 albums including his newest DOWN SOUTH. The Chamber’s Alive After Five outdoor event is free to attend. Chamber member concession vendors will be available from which to purchase food and beverages.

Come early, bring a chair, listen to this incredible music, dance and enjoy visiting with friends. The last Alive After Five event of 2018 will be a night to remember as Jim Quick and Coastline Band takes the stage!

Granville Co. Board of Commissioners to Take Bus Tour of Districts

Loose Leaf Collection in Oxford Runs Mid-Oct. Through Mid-Jan.

The City of Oxford leaf season will start Monday, October 15 and run until Friday, January 18, 2019. Your leaves will be picked up on the same day as your trash. Please have your leaves out for pick up the day before to assure timely removal.  Leaves may be left loose (un-bagged) at the curb, during leaf season. Grass clippings and debris must be separated for removal.

During this time, residents are allowed to place their leaves on the curb in front of their homes. Leaves must be raked to the edge of your yard behind the curb, and not in the street or on the sidewalk. Loose leaf piles need to be free and clean of all other materials – sticks, limbs, garbage, or other debris that may damage the equipment the city uses to collect leaves. Do not park your vehicles on, in front of, or near leaves. The crews need to be able to easily reach the leaves for pick up.

Please do not place leaves in the street, block drainage basins, or drainage ditches. Leaves must be within 8-10 feet of the street for collection.

Oxford Personnel Committee to Discuss Board-Approved Employee Incentives

The Personnel Committee for the Oxford Board of Commissioners will meet on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, at 10 a.m. The meeting will be held in the 1st Floor Training Room of City Hall, 300 Williamsboro Street, Oxford.
