Membership In NC Sheriffs’ Association A Way To Show Support For Local Sheriff, Deputies

Vance County Sheriff Curtis Brame is inviting any interested resident to become a member of the N.C. Sheriffs’ Association.

In response to the number of people who want to help law enforcement agencies and create a stronger partnership to fight crime, Brame issued a statement Thursday to promote membership in the 501c(3) association.

Membership applications will be mailed out to join the voluntary program, which helps to fund technical support and training for sheriffs and deputies, legislative support on key criminal justice issues and support scholarships at colleges and universities in the state.

Individual memberships are $25 a year; businesses can join for an annual fee of $50.

New members will receive a thank-you letter, a membership  card, a bumper sticker, window decal, a 2024 stick-on calendar, member-only  discounts and a subscription to the association’s newsletter, The North Carolina Sheriff.  Businesses will receive the same materials, plus a wall plaque to display. Automobile tags and tag frames are available to members for an additional cost for each item ordered.

The association was founded in 1922 as a way for individuals to show their support for local law enforcement officers and to help sheriffs and deputies protect the lives and property of the citizens they serve.

Sheriff Curtis Brame Attends 98th Annual NC Sheriffs’ Association Conference

Sheriff Curtis Brame of Vance County recently attended the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association’s 98th Annual Business Conference held in Wake County, North Carolina. 

Sheriff Brame said, “Our Annual Business Conference allows North Carolina’s sheriffs to discuss their experiences and learn from each other, as well as bring ourselves up to date on important law enforcement developments. North Carolina sheriffs have a complex role as constitutional officers leading law enforcement within their respective counties. Our duties often require that we be available to personnel and to the public continuously. My staff and I will use this conference training to further serve and protect Vance County citizens.” 

“Sheriffs in every county of North Carolina are facing tremendous challenges in carrying out their responsibilities for law enforcement and the safety of our citizens; maintenance and operation of local jails; recruiting, training and maintaining talented personnel; working with domestic situations, child abuse cases, serving civil papers, tracking sex offenders in the state, issuing weapons permits, providing court security, and in many other areas,” said Sheriff Brame. 

At the NCSA Annual Business Conference, sheriffs discussed issues of interest to the Office of Sheriff, including updates on new changes to law and procedures, as well as an update on the State Budget and other actions by the 2020 General Assembly. 

Sheriff Gerald M. Baker of Wake County and his staff were hosts for the 2020 Annual Business Conference. 

The North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association is the statewide organization of the state’s 100 Sheriffs. Through their Association, the Sheriffs work to strengthen the professional law enforcement services their offices provide to the people of North Carolina.

The Association Headquarters is located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Edmond W. Caldwell, Jr. serves as Executive Vice President and General Counsel.

The North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association stands for the protection of the rights of all citizens. The sheriffs of North Carolina expect all law enforcement officers to conduct themselves professionally and lawfully at all times. These higher standards of conduct include reserving the use of force, especially deadly force, for those times when its use is absolutely necessary and lawful.

While we are not privy to the full investigation, what we have seen in the video of the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota is unacceptable. The video clearly shows unprofessional and egregious conduct by law enforcement officers. This type of law enforcement conduct cannot be tolerated and must be swiftly addressed by the law enforcement community and the criminal justice system.

Part of the mission of the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association is to provide education and training to sheriffs and their personnel. The law enforcement conduct displayed in this video is inexcusable and totally contrary to the training provided to law enforcement officers in North Carolina.

As sheriffs, we strive to build relationships with everyone in our communities. These relationships are built on mutual respect between officers and their community. It is by our conduct that law enforcement officers earn the respect of the public we are sworn to serve. This type of egregious misconduct by a few officers erodes the respect citizens have for all officers. Therefore, when law enforcement officers violate laws or policy, we expect them to immediately be held accountable. We, the members of the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association, will tolerate nothing less.

We extend our deepest sympathies to George Floyd, his family, the citizens and businesses of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the law enforcement community that live up to their oath and creed of respect, courage, dedication, and service to protect and serve their community.
