4-H Dairy Youth Program Interest Meeting Re-Scheduled To Tuesday, Feb. 25

Youth in Warren and Franklin counties interested in showing dairy calves are invited to a 4-H Dairy Youth Program interest meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 25 in Louisburg. This meeting was originally scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 20, but has been re-scheduled because of the winter storm.

The Feb. 25 meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the Franklin County Cooperative Extension Annex in Louisburg.

During the 8-week program, youth will learn about dairy calves and preparing them for a local show. In addition to learning more about handling livestock, participants will gain knowledge about communication, public speaking, record-keeping, teamwork and problem solving.

Bi-weekly practices will begin on Monday, April 7.

CANCELLED: Dec. 3 Equine Nutrition Seminar In Warren County

The seminar on equine nutrition scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 3 in Littleton has been cancelled.

Dr. Paul Siciliano, equine extension specialist with N.C. State University, had been scheduled to present “Preparing Your Horses for Winter,” to walk horse owners through a list of feeding and management strategies to consider as cold weather approaches.

Cooperative Extension “Winter Webinar” Series Discusses Small Ruminants

If you’ve always wanted to learn about goats and sheep and what kind of care they need, join the N.C. Cooperative Extension for its “Winter Webinar” series.

There are five different webinars that will take place via Zoom, and each one discusses different aspects of the care and management of small ruminants.

The first webinar is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 7; webinars will be held monthly through March. Each session has a unique registration link.

4-H Dairy Program Interest Meeting April 25 For Warren, Franklin Youth

A 4-H Dairy Program interest meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Apr. 25 at the Franklin County Cooperative Extension office, 103 S. Bickett Blvd. in Louisburg.

Youngsters and their parents who want to learn more about the project are welcome to attend and get answers to questions they may have.

The program spans eight weeks, during which participants will have the chance to learn about dairy calves as they prepare for a local livestock show. In addition to learning about livestock handling, the youth will learn problem solving, effective communication and public speaking, record keeping, teamwork and more.

Warren County To Offer Farmworker Safety Workshop En Español

Warren County Cooperative Extension is offering a farmworker safety training for Spanish speakers on June 8, 2023.

The workshop – which will be conducted in Spanish – will begin at 9 a.m. at the Warren County Armory, according to Matthew Place, Warren County’s livestock and field crop agent with N.C. Cooperative Extension.

Place expects the workshop to last a couple of hours. Registration is not needed – participants can just show up for the workshop, which will be held at the Warren County Armory, 501 NC Hwy 158 Business in Warrenton.

In addition to general information about workers’ protection standards, workshop topics will include information about green tobacco sickness and heat stress.

Northeast Cattle Producers’ Meeting Mar. 17 In Warrenton

The Northeast Regional beef conference is coming to Warren County next month to provide updates that are relevant and important to beef cattle producers.

The meeting will be held on Mar. 17 from 1 p.m. to  4 p.m. at Sunrise Ridge Farm, located at 222 sunrise ridge farm Lane in Warrenton.

Lunch will be provided beginning at 12 noon, according to information from Matthew Place, Warren County livestock agent.

Among the topics to be discussed by area representatives include an overall industry update, as well as new VFD regulations, external parasite controls and various weaning scenarios.

A one-hour K,D, N and X pesticide credit will be available as well.

N.C. Cooperative Extension Scholarship Open For Those In Business-Related Field Of Study

The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Administrative Professionals Association is accepting applications for the 2023 Herter-O’Neal Scholarship. This scholarship is open to students pursuing an associate’s and/or bachelor’s degree in a business-related field of study or who are enrolled in a diploma program that results in a degree. The statewide winner will be awarded $1,000 for tuition and/or books. District finalists will receive $250.

The Herter-O’Neal Scholarship is awarded each year to honor the work and dedication of Edith Herter and Frances O’Neal, founding members of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Administrative Professionals Association.  NCCEAPA membership is comprised of North Carolina Cooperative Extension administrative assistants in 100 counties, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, N.C. State University and N.C.  A&T State University.

Learn To Construct Livestock Fence During Oct. 25 Workshop

The old saying that “fences make good neighbors” could be amended to “good fences make neighbors happy” to describe an upcoming hands-on workshop that involves creating a safe fencing plan for livestock.

The day-long class will be held on Oct. 25 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Butner Beef Cattle field lab, located at 8800 Cassam Rd. in Bahama, NC 27503.

Whether you want to create new fenced pastures or just want to hone skills needed to keep fences in good order, this workshop is for you.

“A good fence is a critical component of a successful livestock operation no matter what species of animals,” according to a press release from Kim Woods and Matthew Place, livestock agents in Granville, Person and Warren counties, respectively.

The $40 cost per person includes lunch and all materials, and participants should dress appropriately for the weather and bring gloves and eye protection. There will be some indoor classroom work to discuss the economics of fencing and construction materials, as well as state laws regarding fencing. The group will then head outside and actually build a fence.

The event is sponsored by several fence product companies.

Fences keep animals in the safety of their pasture while – hopefully – keeping predators out. “Building a good fence that will last a long time is not near as easy as making the decision that you need a fence,” however. Come to the class to learn more about proper design and construction.

Master Gardener Class Forming for Vance, Warren Counties

N.C. Cooperative Extension is looking for a few good volunteers to join the Vance/Warren Master Gardenersm program. Applications are now being accepted for the 16-week training program, which will begin on Thursday, Aug.11, 2022 and will continue to meet on Thursday mornings.

During the course of the class, participants will learn about all aspects of gardening including fruits, vegetables, weeds, insects, diseases, trees, shrubs, turf and more. The class location will alternate between Henderson and Warrenton.

After training, each volunteer intern is required to provide 40 hours of service in various community outreach projects. No green thumb required, and many other skills are needed including public speaking, writing, photography, social media, event planning, graphic design, and much more. Recent volunteer projects have included demonstration gardens in both counties, newsletters, gardening workshops and seminars, youth education and more. The training fee is $125.

Forestry Field Day June 24 In Oxford

A Forestry Field Day is scheduled for Friday, June 24 to help area landowners with best practice strategies to enhance their woodland resources. Participants will learn first-hand about the possible benefits of forest management techniques of herbicide application and prescribed fires.

This free event will begin at 2 p.m. at the N.C. Forest Service office in Granville County, located at 911 Hillsboro St, Oxford.

From there, the group will proceed to two different field sites that show the results of the respective practices. Transportation to the field sites will be available, or participants may travel in personal vehicles.

The sponsors of the Field Day are the N.C. Forest Service office for Granville County, along with the N.C. Cooperative Extension County Centers in Granville and Vance counties.

Registration is required.
