VGCC Solidifies Partnership With North Carolina A&T State University

Vance-Granville Community College continues to build new partnerships that support transfer student success with senior institutions in North Carolina.

Earlier this semester, VGCC solidified a partnership with North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, NC. The North Carolina A&T ‘Aggie Plus’ agreement provides students with guaranteed admission to the university and promotes the success of transfer students seeking to earn a baccalaureate degree.

The co-admission agreement represents innovations that are being put into place by community colleges and universities in NC. VGCC is one of a growing number of community colleges to partner with NCA&TSU on the Aggie Plus Program. VGCC President Dr. Rachel Desmarais and NCA&TSU Chancellor Dr. Harold Martin signed off on the partnership effort, and now students will benefit.

As a part of the agreement, VGCC students will receive career, financial aid and academic counseling from assigned N.C. A&T and VGCC advisors. Following completion of the associate degree, Aggie Plus participants will receive priority review in the final N.C. A&T admissions process. The application fee for Aggie Plus participants will be waived and students will engage in an Aggie Plus program orientation session at VGCC. Further, N.C. A&T will organize at least one Aggie Plus program visit day to N.C. A&T each year.

“Our college continues to be intentional about providing multiple pathways to success for students. The Aggie Plus Program is yet another example. Ultimately, N.C. A&T provides a quality education for students in many areas including STEM. VGCC students will benefit from this opportunity!” said Dr. Levy Brown, VGCC’s vice president of learning, student engagement and success.

VGCC students inducted into NC A&T Nursing partnership program

GREENSBORO — Eleven Vance-Granville Community College students were formally inducted into the North Carolina Piedmont “Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses” (RIBN) program in a ceremony on Aug. 4 at North Carolina A&T State University’s Union Square Campus in Greensboro. RIBN is a partnership involving the university, VGCC, Davidson County Community College and Guilford Technical Community College.

At the induction ceremony, the A&T School of Nursing welcomed students from VGCC and the other community colleges who will be simultaneously enrolled at the university. RIBN students earn associate’s degrees in nursing over three years (while also taking A&T courses online) and then continue for one year of additional courses at A&T required for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

This year’s inductees from VGCC included Caliegh Katz and Sarah Riley, both of Creedmoor; Chiatyra Turner of Ebony, Va.; Henrry Reboccar-Miguel and Alexis Williams, both of Franklinton; Nigoria Alston and Dawson Peoples, both of Henderson; Rachel Spall of Kittrell; Jessica Morris of Oxford; Kati Hand of Wilton; and Joshua Miller of Zebulon.

Erica Jastrow, the Nursing department chair for VGCC, pinned a “RIBN ribbon” on each of the college’s student inductees as part of the ceremony, while Academic/Career Coach Seletha Pherribo read a brief biography of each one.

With 11 out of the 18 students selected for this year’s cohort, VGCC had more inductees than the other two community colleges in the partnership, combined. In 2016, the first year of the RIBN partnership, the initial cohort consisted of three students, one from each community college.

The North Carolina Piedmont RIBN initiative is one of nine such partnerships that have been launched in North Carolina since 2008 under the direction of the Foundation for Nursing Excellence (FFNE) to increase the educational preparation of North Carolina’s nursing workforce.

VGCC Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Levy Brown was on hand for the ceremony and made brief remarks. “Students, we are very proud of you for taking this huge step,” Brown said. He encouraged the inductees to maintain their current levels of “enthusiasm, commitment and persistence” in order to be successful.

In closing remarks, Dr. Terry Ward, director of the A&T School of Nursing, applauded the students and said she was excited by the diversity that they represent. She also recalled that she started her own education at a community college, but there was nothing like RIBN at that time to help create a straightforward pathway to completing a bachelor’s degree. “We have developed a program which will allow you to move down this path of higher education seamlessly, setting you up for the awesome success that you desire,” Ward said. Using the metaphor of tying a ribbon, she added, “Today represents you tying yourselves together with us and with your colleagues to meet the needs in our communities for nurses. You are the future of nursing.”

In addition to RIBN, VGCC has a partnership with A&T to allow graduates of its Associate Degree Nursing program to transition easily to the university’s four-year Bachelor’s program. 2017 Betsy Jeff Penn 4-H Summer Camp Announcement

It’s that time of the year again. For 100 years, 4-H summer camp has been a life-changing experience, offering campers a greater chance to learn, develop life skills and form attitudes that will help them to become self-directed, productive members of society.

Youth interact with people of different cultures and backgrounds, increasing interdependence, understanding and appreciation of others.  It may be their first experience being an equal member of a community.  Campers are exposed to professionals and role models who may lead career discussions.

Less focus is on competition and failure; more emphasis is on group cooperation and shared success.  Adventures, new experiences and skills learned in an outdoor environment at camp contribute to a positive sense of self.

Youth do not have to be in a 4-H club to participate.

Deadline to apply is March 31st.

Cost of camp is $100.00.  A deposit of $75.00 will hold your space.

Community Voices Program Continues Tonight

Community Voices group meets again tonight at 6-8 p.m. at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market for training with Dr, Michelle Eley from NC A&T State University and local facilitators leading the session.

Last week, participants worked on listing some improvements they would like to see in our community.  Tonight we will explore narrowing those down and possible next steps.  If you came the first time but missed the next session, please come back.  We were excited to have some new people at the second session and want to keep all of you who have an interest.

Please arrive on time so we can respect everyone’s schedule.  (Only light refreshments may be provided by participants on a volunteer basis.)

Vance County Food Giveaway

NC Cooperative Extension Centers across the state are participating in a food drive, that will benefit their own communities, and is in conjunction with the 125th Anniversary of NC Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T) and 30th Annual NC Small Farms Week celebration sponsored by NC A&T which pays tribute to the state’s small scale growers. NC Small farms will be celebrated March 20-26 with the kick off scheduled March 21, 2016 in Vance County, home of the 2015 Small Farmers of the year, Louis and Magnolia Williams.

Community agencies and the faith-based community have joined forces to participate in the University’s 125th Anniversary and NC Small Farms Week service project that is being led by Lonnette Marsh, Interim Regional Program Coordinator with the Cooperative Extension Program at NC A&T.

Locally the NC Central/Eastern Food Bank will be distributing bags of food to community members who are in need of food on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market. The distribution will begin at 10am with student volunteers from Southern Vance High School’s BETA club assisting with the worthy cause. Citizens will receive disbursements using a drive through method, as bags will be bought to individual cars when citizens arrive at the site.

This project is being sponsored locally by St. James Missionary Baptist Church, Vance County Department of Social Services, Vance County Cooperative Extension Center, and the Vance County USDA Farm Service Agency and Rural Development.

Canned foods have also been collected in honor of 125th Anniversary and NC Small Farms Week of NC A&T at the Vance County Cooperative Extension Center, Vance County Department of Social Services, Vance County Government Building, Henderson Vance Parks and Recreation, Bearpond Fire Department, YMCA, Vance County USDA Farm Service Agency and Rural Development, and Southern Vance High School. Foods collected will be donated to the food pantry at Shiloh Baptist Church.
