Henderson Community Cleanup Day April 21

Join the City of Henderson in a community-wide Cleanup Day on Friday, April 21.
It’s a great way for individuals, businesses and other groups to come together to spiff up city roadsides, neighborhoods and commercial spaces.
The cleanup event really proves the adage “many hands make light work,” and City Manager Terrell Blackmon said participants can request trash bags that the city will provide. Filled bags left in pre-designated areas will be picked up by city employees as well.
“This event will be a great opportunity for you to show your community pride and help to improve the appearance of our community, which also helps change the perception of how others view our city,” Blackmon stated.
This local event is timed to coincide with NC DOT’s “Litter Sweep” Program and to celebrate Earth Day.
Local business owners are encouraged to join in by picking up litter outside your business, or along any city or state road where your business is located.

State Litter Collection to Break Record in 2021

The N.C. Department of Transportation’s crews, contractors and volunteers have collected more than 8 million pounds of litter from roadsides and are on pace to exceed the state’s record for litter collection set in 2019.

“We’re less than two months away from our annual Fall Litter Sweep, and we’re counting on everyone to help keep this momentum going,” said state Transportation Secretary Eric Boyette. “Please do your part by securing your loads before traveling, throw away trash in garbage bins, recycle when you can and make sure your friends and family do the same.” 

NCDOT and its partners have removed 8 million pounds of litter since Jan. 1. At this rate, NCDOT will exceed the 10.5 million pounds of litter collected in 2019.

NCDOT’s litter management programs are multifaceted. The department makes use of state-owned forces and contract services statewide. NCDOT’s Sponsor-A-Highway Program allows businesses, organizations and individuals to sponsor litter removal along roadsides. NCDOT is also proud to partner with the more than 120,000 participants in the Adopt-A-Highway Program, where volunteers pledge to clean a section of our highways at least four times a year. 

If you spot someone littering from their vehicle, report them with NCDOT’s Swat-A-Litterbug app by downloading the app at ncdot.gov/litter.

63 Year Old Song Provides Excellent Litter Reminder

“Take out the papers and the trash; Or you don’t get no spendin’ cash,” sang The Coasters in 1958.  “Yakety Yak” was the title.

Later in the song there’s mention of a hoodlum friend.

Here now is 2021, it’s Spring Litter Sweep time.  And this year, the City of Henderson is hosting a Community Cleanup Day on Saturday April 17.

The event starts at 8 a.m. and goes until noon.  So grab your good friends and spread the word, and when you take out your papers and trash, put them in a bag in a barrel.

Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department Director Kendrick Vann wrote to WIZS News and said the “startup location will be at the Public Works Building at 900 South Beckford Drive. Participants are able to register on site” starting at 7:30 a.m.

Pre-registration opportunities also exist.  “Remember this a great opportunity for citizens, families, businesses, churches and all local social organizations to take part in cleaning up our streets and our community,” Vann wrote.

Only the participants that clear the COVID-19 precautions will be allowed to participate.  Participants over the age of five will be required to wear a mask at all times.

State transportation officials are encouraging people across North Carolina to join the clean-up initiative.

According to a press release, N.C. Department of Transportation crews, contract forces, Adopt-A-Highway and Sponsor-A-Highway groups and other volunteers have already collected nearly 3 million pounds of trash statewide this year.

In that press release, N.C. Board of Transportation Division 8 Representative Lisa Mathis said, “Litter is an issue that affects everyone. Our roadsides are our front door to the world … Let’s not trash it up carelessly. It’s important that we all act responsibly and do our part to keep NC looking it’s best. We urge everyone to have some pride and put trash in its proper place. We also encourage people to supplement our efforts by volunteering for a clean-up event.”

The tradition is for NCDOT to schedule a two-week period in April and and another in September to amplify litter clean-up across the state. Vance County Appearance Commission Press Release

The Vance County Appearance Commission again is sponsoring the annual Henderson-Vance Spring Litter Sweep Week, April 23-28, and encouraging local citizens to get involved in cleaning up and improving the appearance of our community.

Throughout the week, the commission is asking residents of neighborhoods and subdivisions to clean up around their homes, business owners to clean up around their businesses and church and school groups to join in extra efforts to clean up around their facilities.

Local N.C. Adopt-A-Highway groups are urged to clean up along the roadway areas they have committed to keeping litter free during Spring Litter Sweep Week.

N.C. DOT crews and other work crews will be out helping to clean up trash and debris along Vance County roadways. Local volunteer groups are urged to join the efforts.

The week will end on Saturday, April 28, with the annual Vance County Recycling Day event in the parking lot of the City Operations Center at 900 South Beckford Drive in Henderson. Volunteers and recycling agency representatives will be on hand to collect recyclables items from citizens free of charge. Items which will be collected for free include all types of old medications, household recyclables, computer equipment, televisions, cardboard, newspapers, magazines, plastic bottles and containers and metal and aluminum cans.

Representatives of Shred Ace will be on hand to securely shred important personal documents for citizens. Shredding will be limited to one cart per local citizen who participates.

No old paints will be accepted this year at the Recycling Day event.

Volunteers with the Vance County Appearance Commission and students from the Kittrell Job Corps Center will be assisting citizens in unloading recyclables as they bring them to the Recycling Day event.

All Spring Litter Sweep Week and Recycling Day volunteers are invited to attend a free hot dog lunch beginning at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, in the City Operations Center. The lunch again is sponsored by the Wisdom for Life Foundation of Jason Brown and the Fruit of the Spirit community group.

Spring Litter Sweep Week supplies of gloves, bags and orange safety vests will be available for free beginning on Thursday, April 19, at the City Operations Center and at the Vance County Schools Administrative Services Center at 1724 Graham Avenue in Henderson.
